Rip Hamilton might miss two more Pistons games | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Quote:
Rip Hamilton might miss two more Pistons games

When he first sprained his right ankle, Rip Hamilton said it felt like the ankle “actually hit the floor.”

That was the first sign that it wasn’t a run-of-the-mill sprain. Hamilton — and the Pistons — is lucky it isn’t broken.

The Pistons probably will be without Hamilton the next two games — definitely tonight’s home contest against the Magic and likely Wednesday’s game at Toronto.

Hamilton hurt his ankle with 5 minutes left in the season opener at Memphis on Wednesday. An initial X-ray proved negative. The Pistons took another X-ray as a precaution when he returned to Detroit, and it also was negative. Still, there was significant swelling and bruising, and Hamilton was placed in a walking boot because he could hardly put any pressure on the ankle.

Hamilton was able to do some light jogging at Monday’s practice, but he still has some work to do before he is cleared to return to action. A return for Friday’s game at Orlando might be optimistic.

Ben Gordon started at shooting guard since the injury and the Pistons lost both games, so Hamilton has been missed. Ben Wallace just rolled his eyes and smiled after Monday’s practice when asked whether Hamilton’s absence had been a factor in the two-game losing streak.

The team misses his offense, and opponents are able to focus their defensive efforts on Gordon and make him work extra hard to get open.

Also, Hamilton doesn’t hold onto the basketball. If there isn’t anything there, he is quick to reverse and initiate good ball movement. And his constant movement helps free up big men around the basket.

“Rip is one of those guys that I don’t think a lot of people realize gets shots for everybody,” Wallace said. “He gets assists for everybody without making passes. He gets an assist with his leg when he’s coming off picks and running and moving. … He definitely changes the offense.”

AILING MAGIC: The Magic could be missing Vince Carter (ankle) and Mickael Pietrus (flu-like illness) as well as Rashard Lewis (suspension), but it still has the game’s best center in Dwight Howard, who was named the Eastern Conference player of the week.

“Howard is going to get his, so you just got to keep throwing bodies at him,” Pistons center Kwame Brown said. “You just keep having enough big buys to throw at him and foul him in certain situations and send him to the free-throw line.”

That's nice to actually see in print.

I was just going to put "cold" but I was worried people would think I was talking about his shooting.

I'll be rooting for the Pistons but I can see a 20 point loss coming. Sure hope I'm wrong.

It would've been my first thought.

I don't have anything from work to do tonight, but I'll be playing volleyball. I'll be taping it and watching it later. I think the Wings play tonight as well. If that's true, the midnight game rebroadcast may be the Wings. Or maybe the Wings are on Versus.

I should check into this stuff before I just post it like this.

No way we lose by 20 IMO. The Magic are down too many scoring pieces to beat us by 20. I think we win and give 100% max effort all night.

In fact I will predict an efficient 25 for Stuckey as he abuses Jameer Nelson, JJ Redick or whomever else they choose to throw at him.

Pistons 94 Magic 88.

I can see Stuckey getting his shot blocked 25 times...

Stuckey is showing he is under control going to the rim, he better start getting some contact calls.

Pistons up by 5 at the end of 1. Stuckey looks good going to the rim.

We have a White Chocolate sighting.

Daye gets his first two NBA points on a dunk.

Small curly fries for a triple double? Cheap.

Howard hammers Kwame before he gets the ball. Because once he gets it, you know its at least 2 points.

41-38 Magic at the half. Pistons had a 9 point lead at one time.

Kwame did a nice job getting to the line 6 times in the half. But only shot 2-6. Stuckey going to the hoop real strong has 15.

Jerebko and Wallace both started and neither one has scored.

Was that a 3 on 1 break that Stuckey managed to get a charge on when he wouldn't give the ball up? And after the Pistons go on a mini-run (6-0) to tie it up they decide to go to a 3 guard lineup? So far so good. . .it's now an 8-0 run.

They need to reward the Pistons for taking it hard to the rim. Charlie V and Stuck are getting hammered.

It's feels like a Lions officiated contest.

so far this year we've been a pretty poor fourth quarter team...good start here though.

He got wrecked in the face and was holding his eye. He's in the locker room now. Hopefully, he's alright.

Bynum with a man's drive to pick up the 6th foul on Dwight. He sold it.
