CSN Report: Kings to stay in Sacramento

Monday both the NBA and the Maloof brothers will announced that the Kings will remain in Sacramento for another season, CSN California reports.

A source close to the discussions tells Comcast SportsNet that the NBA has told the Maloofs to expect the Kings to stay in Sacramento next year.

The NBA is expected to put out a press release on Monday and the Maloofs will follow with a release of their own, but an NBA press conference is not expected. The source also said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is expected to hold a press conference on Monday.
Should be an interesting year in Sacramento. The Maloofs did everything they could to leave. Now they have to sit there and pretend being in Sacramento is what they want.

I hope their attendance drops like a rock next year.

Thibodeau Named NBA Coach Of The Year - RealGM Wiretap

Thibodeau Named NBA Coach Of The Year

The National Basketball Association today announced that Bulls Head Coach Tom Thibodeau has been named the 2010-11 NBA Coach of the Year. Thibodeau is the fourth head coach in franchise history to win the award, joining Johnny Red Kerr (1967), Dick Motta (1971) and Phil Jackson (1996).

"This is a well deserved honor for Tom. He is a terrific teacher, motivator, tactician and communicator. His work ethic, passion for the game and for our players is appreciated," said Bulls GM Gar Forman. "We are thrilled that he is part of the Bulls organization and want to congratulate him on being named the NBA's Coach of the Year."

In his first season with the Bulls, and his first year as a head coach in the NBA, Thibodeau guided Chicago to the best record in the NBA with a mark of 62-20 (.756). Chicago posted the top home record in the league (36-5), and recorded its first winning road record since 1998, as it went 26-15 away from the United Center. Thibodeau’s 62 wins ties the NBA record for most wins by a first-year head coach in NBA history (Paul Westphal in 1993, Phoenix), and surpasses Phil Jackson’s team record for most wins by a Bulls first-year head coach (55 victories in 1991).

Chicago’s 62 wins ranks fourth in team annals for wins in a season, and it marks a 21-game improvement from the team’s 41-41 campaign in 2009-10 (the third-best single-season turnaround in franchise history).

Selected by the NBA media, Thibodeau’s honor marks the seventh time in NBA history that a first-year head coach has been named NBA Coach of the Year: Harry Gallatin (St. Louis, 1963), Johnny Red Kerr (Chicago, 1967), Mike Schuler (Portland, 1987), Larry Bird (Indiana, 1998), Doc Rivers (Orlando, 2000) and Rick Carlisle (Detroit, 2002).

Blazers Likely To Extend Qualifying Offer To Oden - RealGM Wiretap

Blazers Likely To Extend Qualifying Offer To Oden

In a 26-minute meeting with reporters Monday, Trail Blazers general manager Rich Cho was asked repeatedly about Oden's future.

The 7-foot center will become a restricted free agent on July 1, and the Blazers have from the end of the NBA Finals to June 30 to tender a qualifying offer to Oden. Cho said if Oden continues to work hard in his rehabilitation, he was "pretty sure" the team would tender the offer.

"All the indications from a medical standpoint are that it's come along well," Cho said of Oden's left knee. "I see him in here every day, working hard. He's getting a sweat up every day. He wants to come back, and come back and play well." Cho said Oden could become a key piece alongside LaMarcus Aldridge, who emerged this season as the Blazers' leading scorer.

"I think if you put him next to L.A. andGerald Wallace, we'd have one of the best front lines in the league," Cho said.

Nene May Opt Out Of Contract This Summer - RealGM Wiretap

Nene May Opt Out Of Contract This Summer

Nene said Monday he is strongly considering opting out of the final season of his six-year, $60 million contract, which would pay him $12 million, and testing the free-agent market.

After nine seasons in the NBA, Nene has full control of his future and it could take hard work for the Nuggets to make him happy enough to return.

"I've been here for nine years," said Nene, 28. "If that doesn't work how you want it, you need to sit down and evaluate everything and see what you can do."
The overarching issues in this situation are his level of happiness with the Nuggets and, ultimately, his value on the open market.

Players similar to him — Utah's Al Jefferson, Chicago's Carlos Boozer and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge — will make $11 million to $14 million next season.

D.Rose should not be MVP. I hope the coaches don't put him on the first team and put Kobe and Wade as the Gs as deserved. Not sure CP3 didn't play better than him too to be quite honest.

    Thibs is COY, unquestioned

PLEASE GET ME NENE NEXT TO GREG MONROE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe if Nene says he wants out we can pull a sign and trade? Rip and 2 firsts? JR is gone and Afflalo doesn't score enough. Maybe Rip/Bynum and the firsts for Felton/Nene? They save some cap space that way in Denver. They can have Gordon if they prefer of course.

If I had the chance as Pistons GM(we probably don't have the cap space), I'd gamble on Greg Oden. I hear the Blazers may offer him 4/40, wow.

It really depends on how you define the MVP award. If you want the most valuable player to his team, Rose is a fine candidate. But he is probably not the best player in the league.

Oden has a QO right around $8M I think, so yeah he will be expensive. Huge risk and very high reward if he stays healthy. A healthy Oden next to Monroe would be amazing.

Too low. Neal and Fields above him is a joke. They just got more exposure. Monroe was by far the better player, probably ahead of Cousins too. He just didn't have the name value. oh well

Timberwolves Intend To Sign Rubio Within A Month - RealGM Wiretap

Timberwolves Intend To Sign Rubio Within A Month

A Timberwolves contigent led by David Kahn are spending the next week in Spain for this weekend's Euroleague Final Four and to continue work they intend will get Ricky Rubio signed to a NBA contract within a month.

Rubio's Regal Barcelona team never made it to the Final Four scheduled for his hometown this year because it got beat out by Greece's Panathinaikos team in a playoff series in March.

Rubio has a $1 million buyout with Regal Barcelona.

By NBA rules, the Wolves can contribute only $500,000 to such a buyout.

Good news for Minnesota, but most importantly the NBA. We don't need a Rubio not wanting to go to a small market story right now.

Report: Lakers coaching search ?wide open? | ProBasketballTalk

Report: Lakers coaching search “wide open”

The conventional wisdom is that the Lakers would go through the motions of a coaching search, then hire lead assistant Brian Shaw. The reasoning being that they have a two-time championship roster built to run the triangle offense, so you stick with what works.

But there is this one little discussed fact — owner Jerry Buss is not a huge fan of the triangle. He liked all the winning that came with Phil Jackson, but he preferred to watch a more entertaining “show time” transition offense.

Plus that championship offense didn’t look good the last week, did it?

Which is why we should take seriously the report from J.A. Adande at ESPN that the Lakers coaching search is not going to be limited in scope, or move quickly.

Some info starting to leak about the new CBA and what might be in it. More detail at the link.

The Point Forward Posts NBA proposes unique ‘franchise tag’ to union

    Franchise Tag

The tag, however, would be very different from the NFL’s version, which allows a team to essentially block one of its free agents from entering the market by binding him to his incumbent team with a one-year contract that carries a high salary based on various parameters.

The system the league has presented would not work this way, according to sources. Instead, a team would be allowed to designate one player for preferential contractual treatment, including more overall money, more guaranteed money and at least one extra year on his contract. A player would have to agree to such a designation. It is designed to work as an incentive to get a player to remain with his team rather than as a roadblock to free agency, the sources said.
    Guaranteed Contracts

Sources also said the league’s proposal would ban fully guaranteed contracts. All contracts would have limits on the amount of money a player would be guaranteed to receive, and those guarantees would decline during the life of each contract. In other words, a player making, say, $5 million per season over four years would actually be guaranteed less than $5 million in each of those four seasons — and the amount guaranteed would drop each season. The idea is for teams to be able to get out of undesirable contacts more easily and avoid ugly, Eddy Curry-style buyout talks.

Lakers Reportedly Interested In Mike Brown

The Los Angeles Lakers are taking a deliberate approach to their search for a successor to Phil Jackson, but NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com the team has added Mike Brown to its list of candidates.

The former Cleveland Cavaliers coach, now working as an analyst for ESPN, is expected to interview "soon" with the Lakers, sources say.

Brown would become the fourth known candidate for the job, along with former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman, ex-Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy and Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw, who is regarded as the only serious in-house contender to replace Jackson.

Yao Ming does not sound confident he’ll play again | ProBasketballTalk

Yao Ming does not sound confident he’ll play again

There’s always hope. That’s the thought for a ballplayer looking to return from injury right up until that moment he finally hangs it up. You never want to let go until there’s just no chance for you get more minutes on the floor.

Yao Ming may be approaching that point.

The Houston Chronicle ran an in-depth article on Ming’s progress Sunday. Yao says that it won’t be until August most likely that he’ll know if he even can play ever again.

Yao, 30, said he “might” know in August or September if he will ever play in the NBA again.

He wants to. And he wants to play here. He just doesn’t know if his body will enable him.

“It’s too early to say still,” he said. “The experience I have (tells me to keep) doing what I am supposed to do every day.

“You never know what will happen tomorrow.”

via Solomon: Yao fights different battle on road to comeback | Solomon on Rockets/NBA | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle.

Yao’s body has been through so much stress over the past five, six, what feels like twenty years, it’s hard to see him being able to recover. If he does decide to make a return he’ll have to get a new contract. Houston is going to feel obligated to give Yao one more try but if they do, they need to be extremely cautious with any offer granted.

This story is just sad, there’s really no way around it. Yao would have been one of the best big men of his era considering his touch, footwork and raw size. He had just started to shed his soft tag when the injuries began to tear him down. The excitement of seeing Yao back to full strength this season was palpable. Some things just aren’t meant to be.

Laker fans not thrilled with Brown. Cant say I blame them. I still remember that Orlando series a few years ago. Orlando killed them off the pick and roll and Brown did nothing to adjust the entire series. And defense is his specialty.

Odd that they hired him right now. My understanding is that coaches get paid during the lockout. Seems like they would have waited.

Oh well, it lets me post my favorite all time .gif.

I'm not a big fan of players picking and choosing coaches. But its now coming out that Bryant wasn't even consulted on the hiring of Brown. Big mistake. You might not take what he says seriously, but you at least get his input.
