And when did they start naming winter storms? I really dislike it.

This year, they thought it would help people understand the storm better, instead of the "SNOWMEGEDDDDDDON'13" stuff I guess.

You should have checked the temps yesterday, Huey.

Yesterday was the coldest day in 4 years. Looks like the worst is over and we will soon warm back up to high 20s.

We dodged a bullet not having any wind. I can handle cold but I can't handle the wind.

I love it. There's a reason I applied for a job in Fairbanks. I wouldn't like this weather year-round, but I could live with it! Fantastic.

I flew into Fairbanks once on Flying Tiger Airlines. I was in short sleeve khakis. The small terminal was encircled buy a snow bank as high as the roof. While the Wx was clear it was just under freezing. The Eskimos in the lounge turned out to be snowed in Hawaiians. For this Florida Native, I wondered how people survived. Still living in the deep South, I did work in refrigeration for a while and understand what 20 below with wind feels like and it is not something you want to go in and out of often. Stay in the cold and get the job done, then warm up.

Is it really that bad this year? To me it seems like we are finally returning to normal after a few years of abnormally mild winters.
I just met you, and this is crazy,
I want JBK to see this, could you quote me maybe?

I have a coworker that has been on vacation around the Lakeland area the past two weeks. He picked his weeks off very well. It is absurd to think of single digits as being warm, but this morning didn't really feel too bad compared to the breezy signle digit days earlier this week. I guess that as I have aged, I have noticed my tolerance for chill has declined.
And I am with Yoda on the naming of winter storms. When did this practice start? What is wrong with naming them "Blizzard of '78" or something along those lines?

It's Auto Show week. Seems like it is the first really cold snap always occurs in conjunction with it. (At least in the last 10 years or so)
I will admit remarking to my wife over the weekend that the fairly temperate Fall and early Winter has made the 20s and teens feel a lot worse than I remember.“There are only two means of refuge from the miseries of life:

The tree in my backyard fell down in the middle of the night on Sunday and took out my power line. Luckily my brother is a master electrician and he took care of it. DTE did not come out until 3 days after...it was one of the coldest days.
I did help turn the tree into firewood.

This winter would still be abnormally mild if not for this cold outbreak, which was brought on by a major episode of stratospheric warming, which disrupted the more typical circulation and allowed arctic air to move south.
Also, on the question of naming winter storms, that's something the Weather Channel (and only them) started doing this winter, as much to drive up ratings as for increasing public awareness.Stuck in FL for the duration.

Foot and a half of snow at my house right now. NWS is saying it'll be the mid 40's on Tuesday. This'll be a fun, wet mess.

I love the unpredictability of lake effect. Hate driving in it but it's great otherwise. I have heard anywhere from 2-6 inches more tomorrow, then 50 on Tuesday.
Might be time to play in the mud like a little kid again!VT

It's winter in Michigan. What do you expect?

Weather.com is calling for "ice pellets" all day here tomorrow. I think I'll stay home.

Luckily they are saying only 1-3 here now, it was being projected at 6-9 earlier this week. That shuts down the state for days out here.

I'm not a fan of winters, but the Michigan summers make up for them for me. That being said, I think you just get used to it. Yesterday it was about 9 degrees and I walked about 2 miles from work instead of driving to get the iPhone 5 upgrade. Didn't wear a winter hat, scarf, winter gloves, etc. Not because I'm macho, but just because I think as a Michigander you get used to it.
After living in Nevada for a couple of years, one thing I could not get used to is unbearable heat.I like a man who grins when he fights--- Sir Winston Churchill.

Hear there is an ice storm coming through Sunday night/Monday morning, just in time for the commute. Still a little early to say but be safe everyone if it pans out..

Yes, be careful. Ice storms can be very damaging... a few years ago one knocked out power in western Ma and SW New Hampshire for several weeks. Hopefully it's not that serious out there.

The city effect on weather seems to be like lake effect, but the opposite with regard to precipitation.

Storm coming towards West Michigan looks pretty gross. Lots of pinks on the radar.
