Billy Sims Barbeque
has 23 locations in OK and MO, and apparently there will soon be one in Southfield on Telegraph just north of 10 Mile, in what iirc used to be a really big *** Arby's. i drove by today and saw it's under construction. seems to get decent reviews on Yelp, etc.

When the server brings the drinks, would they mind if we knock the Gatorade off the table?

I actually went to one in Springfield, MO just a couple weeks ago. Didn't eat, but I picked up some BBQ sauce and looked around. The food looked good.

It was a big *** Arby's. I don't understand why the Arby's closed. It can't be because they didn't charge enough for the food.
It's right next to the Shield's on Telegraph, and there has been a sign on the building that said "Coming Soon" for about a year. This week, they put up a full sized Billy Sims BBQ sign, so I think that the grand opening must be imminent."For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land."

Wow, I rarely go up that way but distinctly remember that Arby's. It had the big cowboy hat sign.
When I read this thread title it took me a few minutes to figure out if Billy was still alive......

are you sure you're thinking of the same Arby's? i used to work in the area and in the 10 or so years since, i don't think they ever had the big hat sign (google street view this address 25025 Telegraph Road, Southfield, MI ). i do know the Arbys way up north on Telegraph on the Pontiac/Waterford border still has the big hat. i've eaten there once or twice. ( 49 North Telegraph Road, Waterford Township, MI )

maybe I don't remember it right then, but I do remember a big *** Arby's there. If you asked me yesterday what was at 10 mile and Telegraph I'd say a big *** Arby's.

In my mind, the Arby's by Macomb Mall still has the big cowboy hat, but I couldn't find it the last time I was by there.

I understand that Barry Sanders walked into one, ate 2/3 of a meal and then walked out before finishing.

FWIW, I saw a Billy Sims BBQ pickup truck westbound on US24 between Defiance, OH and the Indy/Ohio line Sunday. The huge logo that took up the entire side of the pick up was hard to ignore.

Here is the official press release about the Southfield opening.
BILLY SIMS BARBECUE OPENING SOUTHFIELD, MI LOCATION AUGUST 24
Southfield, MI August 15, 2012- The Billy Sims Barbecue franchise is pleased to announce the opening of its newest location in Southfield, MI on Friday, August 24. This marks the 24th location for the franchise aptly named after famed 1978 Heisman and former Detroit Lions running back, Billy Sims.
With operations in Oklahoma and Missouri, the Billy Sims Barbecue franchise is expanding into the state of Michigan. A second Michigan location is scheduled to open in Lincoln Park October 5, 2012.
“It’s great to be opening in Michigan,” Sims stated. “I have been anxious to get a location open up here for quite a while. I receive a lot of fan mail asking when we are opening in Michigan. I am excited to now have a location for my loyal Detroit fans to visit.”
To celebrate the opening, Billy Sims and fellow Detroit Lions alumnus, Steve Owens will host an in-store appearance at the Southfield Billy Sims Barbecue Saturday, September 8 from 11am-8pm.
Billy Sims Barbecue-Southfield is located at 25025 Telegraph Road Southfield, MI. The restaurant is open 11am-9pm Sunday-Thursday and 11am-10 pm Friday and Saturday. The phone number to the Southfield restaurant is 248-809-2861.

I was invited to stop by his restaurant yesterday to check the place out, sample some food, and meet Billy.
The menu available yesterday was limited for the event, as they were only serving up sandwiches (with various meat choices), a side dish (variety to choose from), and soft drink. The food I tasted was great and I would certainly stop in again to see what their full menu has to offer.
During the event, I picked up a couple bottles of the Billy Sims BBQ Sweet and Mild sauce and had the bottles autographed. They will be available in the future in some type of giveaway from MotownSports.com.I'm Motown W. Guy and I approve this message...

A friend of mine once broke down on I-75 on a cold night around 11pm. This was pre cell-phone days. Billy Sims and one of the Lions O-Lineman pulled up and asked him what was wrong - drove him to a gas station in Detroit so he could call AAA - then drove him back to his car and let him sit in their warm car until the tow truck got there.....wrote down his name and got him a couple of tickets to a game.

Velma and I went to the telegraph road location for lunch today. there was quite a line, and the staff seems like they're just figuring things out, which i'm sure will improve with time. the food was decent, although we thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was. the meat was actually very good (we both got pulled pork sandwiches, she added a rib.) it was well cooked and also didn't contain any of the yucky bits that come with mediocre pulled pork. the sauces were ok-they only offer 2 and one is overly sweet and meh, the other underdelivers on a promise of spicyness. the sandwich buns are low quality, and we were both disappointed by the sides.
in all, it was decent but unremarkable. if i'm going for decent bbq, i'd rather pay 1-2$ more and go to Famous Dave's for better food, served sit down style by eager to please staff. if i'm looking for good bbq, i'm headed down to stand in line at Slow's or up to the end of the earth at the Clarkston Union.
also, they sell chia pet Billy's where the chia grows into a sweet afro and it was definitely good for a laugh.Evil

Glad you got Velma out of the house. I hear from her occasionally and miss her presence here.
We had Snow's back in the 70's and I think his family still runs it. I had several people let me try a rib from them and it was great. finally one day I entered and Mr. Snow waited on me. I ordered 6 ribs and beans with regular sauce. Mr. Snow was elderly then and his eyes twinkled as he commented...."you white boys don't know good BBQ when you order that "easy" sauce. I put real BBQ sauce on two of them for you". I will never again forget biting into that fifth rib. I have no idea what happened to the rest of my dinner because I had to leave the area and find some crackers or anything to counteract the peppers. I still can't take real hot sauces.Live your life for what it can be and not for what it was.
