I had something in gest for this last night but decided against posting. While I don't respect much the guy's work, I don't want to make fun of the dead with whom I have no real grievances (i.e., he never stole my pig)

I've never heard of htis guy until he died. It appears, based on facebook, that I'm the only one who didn't know who he was.

There was a great 60 Minutes piece on him four or five years ago. One nouveau riche couple with a 10,000 square foot home for only the two of them had a couple hundred of his paintings, many of them still in crates stacked against walls all over the house. When asked why they loved Kincade's work so much, the man said when he saw light glowing out of the window of a thatched roof English cottage in one of them, he wondered, "are they eating cookies in there?"

The power of marketing is amazing when done right.

Thomas Kinkade, the George W. Bush of art - Thomas Kinkade - Salon.com
Kinkade was only 54, and his family told the media he died of "natural causes." This comes after years of reports of drunken public misbehavior: cursing at people who tried to save him from falling off bar stools, heckling Siegfried & Roy, grabbing a woman's breasts at a publicity event and, most memorably, urinating on a Winnie the Pooh statue at the Disneyland Hotel while proclaiming, "This one's for you, Walt!" There were DUI arrests. Also, his manufacturing company declared bankruptcy two years ago, and former franchisees of the once-ubiquitous Thomas Kinkade Signature Galleries won settlements against him for fraud.
