Delaware Fugitive Arrested In Michigan
Man Wanted In Connection With Shooting Last November
POSTED: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
UPDATED: 12:43 pm EST January 27, 2010
Daemont Wheeler
GIBRALTAR, Mich. -- A man wanted by authorities in Delaware for the shooting death of another man last November was taken into custody Wednesday morning after surrendering in Gibraltar.
U.S. marshals and area law enforcement agencies said they began searching for 29-year-old Daemont Wheeler Tuesday night when they received information that he was in the metro Detroit area.
"Before they could apprehend him, they received information that he took off on foot," said Gibraltar Police Chief Raymond Canterbury.
Wheeler was spotted in a wooded area of Gibraltar Wednesday morning, which prompted authorities to issue a lockdown for three schools -- Carlson High School, Schumate Middle School and Parsons Elementary.
"We were concerned that if he was still in the area, that if kids were driving to school or parents were dropping kids off, we didn't want him to make contact with them or make it into the school," Canterbury said.
Authorities set up a one-mile radius parameter and Wheeler surrendered himself around 10 a.m.
"I'm sure he came out because he knew that the SWAT team and other officers were after him," Canterbury said.
Wheeler will be extradited back to Delaware.

GIBRALTAR, Mich.- A Dover man wanted in connection with a November shooting was captured Wednesday in Michigan.
With information developed by the U.S. Marshals First State Fugitive Task Force, 29-year-old Daemont L. Wheeler, previously of the Rodney Village area of Dover, was arrested Wednesday morning in a wooded area of Gibraltar, Mich., located just outside of Detroit. Members of the U.S. Marshals Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team and the Gibraltar Police Department made the arrest.
Wheeler had been wanted by Delaware State Police for attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. These charges stemmed from a incident alleged to have occurred on Nov. 13 in Dover.
According to authorities, during November's incident, Wheeler shot a 48-year-old man after an argument at a home on John Clark Road in the Rodney Village area. According to investigators, Wheeler and the victim were both involved with women from the same family and the two men did not like each other. Authorities say the dispute came to a head when Wheeler pulled out a handgun and shot the victim multiple times with a handgun. The victim was transported to Kent General Hospital where he underwent surgery. Authorities said that after the shooting, Wheeler fled the home and his whereabouts were unknown.
On Jan. 20, Delaware State Police requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals First State Fugitive Task Force in the search for Wheeler.
Shortly thereafter, Task Force Officers learned that Wheeler may have fled the Delaware area and traveled to metro Detroit. On the evening of Jan. 26, Wheeler was spotted in an apartment complex in Gibraltar. Authorities say Wheeler noticed U.S. Marshals and Gibraltar police in the area and ran into the nearby woods. Gibraltar police K-9 officers and U.S. Marshals tracked him in the woods for about two miles, but were unable to locate him.
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 27, an area resident spotted Wheeler as he was attempting to leave the wooded area. This prompted local authorities to issue a lockdown for three nearby schools and set up a perimeter around the wooded area. With the assistance of a helicopter, Wheeler was located and surrendered without further incident to the U.S. Marshals and Gibraltar police at approximately 10 a.m.
According to authorities, the temperature in Gibraltar had dipped to 20 degrees during the evening and Wheeler had no coat or shelter.
Wheeler is being held in Michigan pending extradition proceedings back to Delaware.

So messed up. Because of PuNk's punks, I lost my prep hour, and spent it huddled in the corner with a bunch of 7th graders who think this sort of thing is funny

Rodney Village is my own little Detroit 5 miles from me, so I thought it was only fair.

I'll be back to lose more money at Dover Downs in May.
I knew I shouldn't have given that guy a lift to Michigan last time I was there!
