Flipping virus
I have a virus on my computer that causes pop ups. I can't run safe mode or run malware. It is driving me nuts.

based on the other thread, i'd say using Avast to clean it up is out of the question...

After reinstalling Malwarebytes, it ran perfectly and found nothing. My computer can restart in safe mode now as well.

That one is a pain. I recommend combo fix for it. My GF had vundo and after chatting with the malwarebyte people, they told her to use combo fix.

I have the same problem. I tried to install malwarebytes, but it wouldn't install properly. Any suggestions?

What is combo fix?
I've spent hours on the phone with Microsoft Live One Care support over the past week and they can't figure out what has a stranglehold on my home computer. I'm getting close to trashing it and buying a new one.

I have no clue what the name of the virus was. But I had the same issues everyone else is describing. What is weird is I have no clue where I picked up the virus. Combo fix solved the issues though.

The name of the virus on mine was never displayed. It just peggged Spybot.

About 3 weeks ago, I got a virus (I think from this site) which I thought I removed, but alas pretty soon the computer wouldn't boot. After spending a day trying to fix it, I gave up and I have been using the hard drive as a slave drive. But this thread got me thinking maybe it was vundo, which lead me to scan my drivers folder for a virus with malwarebytes. It didn't find anything, but somehow avast chirped up as it was scanning and found another virus. I googled that trojan and found somebody who had the same problem that I did around the same time. So I deleted the infected file (atapi.sys), and then replaced with a good copy. I hooked the drive back up to the old computer, and at least got to the start-up screen in safe mode. A new record, but no further. 'Boot using last known good configuration' fixed some things and got me to the desktop, but nothing would run except notepad. Couldn't even open a window. Then I booted to safe mode and logged on as 'admin', and a couple of simple things would actually work. System restore did nothing though. After about an hour of farting around, I booted to safe mode and logged onto my personal account, and (happily) that didn't work either. This was my 'aha' moment as this likely meant something was wrong with my user account. I logged back in under safe mode as admin, created a new user account, and logged in under that new account in normal mode. Voila. At this point, I think it is fixed but am running every antivirus under the sun to be sure.
tl;dr: computers are maddening

Download a linux live CD with integrated windows virus scanning tools. It will boot to a desktop and you can scan your harddrives from the linux live boot, this will prevent the virus from launching with your windows boot and hiding themselves in resident memory.

Wow, this is ingenious, never would have thought about doing it that way. Thanks!

So I ran "SuperAnitSpyware" which worked well enough to allow me to download Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found "logon.exe" (the same virus my other computer had) and killed it.
My computer is clean now.
