Your little secret: Movie edition
Movies that you love that not many people saw or appreciated.....
I'll start....
After Hours (1985). Directed by Martin Scorsese. No big names in it, a dark (very dark) comedy about a guy (Griffin Dunne) that meets a girl (Rosanna Arquette) at a coffee shop in New York and decides to pay her a visit in SoHo late that night - everything goes wrong for the guy. Its pretty slow-paced, but funny as hell. Watching it now, its a bit dated, but still funny.

Its the girl saying "surrender Dorothy" when he climaxed story and the late bit when he taped up all the DEAD PERSON signs all over. Linda Fiorentino was in it - hot as ever.
Oh, and Cheech and Chong have minor roles in it.

Scorsese did a much faster dark comedy about a no-name comic (Rbbert DeNiro) who tries to get on the Johnny Carson-type show (The Jerry Jankford (Jerry Lewis show). and they keep turning him down - so he hires his friend (Sanra Bernhardt) to kidnap Jerry (she wraps him in masking tape- massive amoutns of massive tape). The comic, Rubert Pupkin, uses the shwow as ransom. Give me 15 minutes, you'll get jerry back alive and well. Jery escapse Sandra and beats her up and is trying to walk the few blocks to his manattan studio but on the way he passes some TVs in a store window and sees this Rubert Pupkin is actually on the air - telling tepid jokes. The FBI arrest him and he gets 18 months, but there are two books written about him, he gets his parole and gets his own talk show. Stalker comedy, gotta love.

Recently on Starz On Demand I watched Rebirth of a Nation, which was a "Remix"/retelling of the KKK propaganda film Birth of a Nation; which along with being a terribly racist film, was also one of the best and most important films of its day. Rebirth of a Nation becomes a strangely important film in it's own right, as it compares actions of the reconstructionist south to that of the war to liberate Iraq, and other social commentary of today. It's a fabulous film, I highly recommend it, especially since the running time of Rebirth is 100 minutes, compared to the 3+ hours for Birth of a Nation.

"Into The Night"
A Landis film with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer. Dan Aykroyd, Carl Perkins, David Bowie, and several others of note are in it also.
Here's one assessment:
Quote:
|
Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer before they really hit the big time. A great caper style movie - part comedy, part thriller, part urban angst. Goldblum leaves his unfaithful wife one night and gets caught up in a bizarre series of events when a pursued Pfeiffer lands on his car asking for help. Needless to say he gets implicated in all kinds of things (a bit like After Hours and Something Wild). Very funny, charming at times and ultimately engaging - you want the night to last forever as you become more involved in the story and the characters. Landis at his very best (what happened to him?!). Loads of cameo

The Right Stuff
It was critically acclaimed and won some technical oscars and nominated for Best Picture so it's not like it's particularly under appreciated. But I think it's one of the best movies of the 80s and never got the full attention it deserved. It didn't do too well at the Box Office. Probably a top 5 for me.

Trespass:
From IMDB:
"Two Arkansas firemen, Vince and Don, get hold of a map that leads to a cache of stolen gold in an abandoned factory in East St. Louis. What they don't know is that the factory is in the turf of a local gang, who come by to execute one of their enemies. Vince sees the shooting, the gang spots Vince, and extended mayhem ensues. As Vince and Don try to escape, gang leader King James argues with his subordinate Savon about how to get rid of the trespassers."

I'd love to see Bill Paxton and William Sadler as gang members. Gonna have to catch this one.

Two guys named Ice in the same movie. What are the chances?
Speaking of Paxton, has anyone seen an indie he directed (and starred in) called Frailty ? Wow, talk about dark.

They're the firemen, not the gang members. This is really an underrated movie, I think. Good story premise, and well-executed.

By the way: if you have a Netflix membership, "Trespass" is one of the movies you can play through the site. I highly recommend it.

WHAT?
Who has ever heard of black gang members? That's ridiculous. I no longer care to watch this film.

Some semi-interesting trivia about the film Trespass:
-- Initially, the film was titled "Looters" however the LA riots happened and the release was pushed back and the title of the film was changed.
-- First and last time both Ice T and Ice Cube appear in the same film.
The movie itself is... okay. Not great but worth a watch if it's on television and you're bored.

A Prayer for the Dying is probably one of the top 10 best books I've ever read. Never seen the flick - should check it out.

It's definitely not Cannes materials, but it's not canned material, either. It's a cut above for a movie of its ilk.

Featuring a surprising cameo by a Marylin Manson, minus the make-up.

Did we have a thread similar to this once?
(Or maybe I'm thinking of another MB where I answered a question like this)
Anyway, "Memento" comes to mind.

OF course the movie I was in* always gets my attention. Really not a bad movie and me and Madonna help make it great!
One of the few movies about HS wrestling.
* = I am in the crowd at the wrestling tournament. I was almost more visible in Benny and Joon but they only used the front foot and a half of my car.
