Default Wild peacocks in my backyard

Wild peacocks somehow found their way into my backyard today. I'd never seen one before except in captivity but four came into my backyard. Here's a picture of three of them. Man, they can fly too. Sounds dumb, but I thought they were like turkeys and couldn't fly. Has anyone ever had peacocks just show up? I wonder if they belong to some one and escaped.I'm just sort of flabbergasted. My cats were crawling on their bellies meowing in terror as we took the pictures. These things were huge and the cats were scared.

There is a family of peacocks that live across the street from me. I was finally able to get pictures of the male fanning a few weeks ago.

I think they are limited on the distance they can fly, but can fly up and down from rooftops, etc

    Peacock family of three:

    They are fascinating creatures.

We have been overrun with wildlife in our little yard due to the huge winter. Many deer and a small group of turkeys. THe turkeys freak you out when you hear them in the yard.

There were wild peacocks in the park the other day. I didn't think they could fly either. But there they were. I thought it was cool.

Reminds me of a trip to the zoo. I can't imagine having wild peacocks flying around here in Dearborn.

Hey Bert - You making a wedding dress?

    Link

Wedding dress has 2,009 peacock feathers

NANJING, China, April 13 (UPI) -- A Chinese wedding dress factory said eight workers spent 40 days creating a $1.5 million dress from 2,009 peacock feathers.

The factory in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, said the dress also includes a bodice featuring brocade and Suzhou embroidery, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

Male peacocks each shed an average 200 feathers during an average year, meaning the makers of the dress would have needed to collect dropped feathers from more than 10 birds for a year to gather enough for the gown, the British newspaper said.

I live in a very urban area of Boise, Idaho but it's right at the edge of the foothills--fairly well-populated in their own right--and I've had a ton of wildlife show up in my front or back yards the last five years. Foxes, deer, owls, a mountain lion, and of course, stuff like the usual raccoons and snakes. It surprises me because I never saw anything like that in my small town in Indiana I grew up in fifty years ago. Just squirrels and birds.

It was Auburn, Indiana, TTF--just five miles from where davidsb lives.

By the way, the peacocks will not leave. Actually, they are peahens--all females. The male was there yesterday and is nowhere to be seen today. "Flown the coop," so to speak.

They were on the carport today pecking at the window by the loft where I have the computer and just staring at me. They keep trying to enter the house. Idaho Fish and Game, the Bird Rescue people, and the Animal Shelter all say there is nothing they can do. Check out these pics.

That's them just staring at me while I was on the computer earlier today.

The Catch-22 on this is that Fish and Game and the Bird Rescue people will not take them because they are classified as "domestic pets." But I understand peacocks in captivity usually have their wings clipped so they can't fly but these bird can fly so the Animal Shelter will not take them because they are "wild." All the agencies are passing the buck because they are a pain in the rear to deal with.

I actually sort of like them. I've read that peacocks are associated with wealth, joy, good fortune, enlightenment and the like. I guess I could use some of that, minus the poop.

Peacock can be cooked very like turkey, except that it tends to be dry-fleshed and requires frequent basting with butter. Don't know where you got your peacock, but every time we see one of those fine-feathered fellows strutting around the local zoo, we can't help thinking how handsome he would look on a silver serving platter!

It seems with most animals they dont mind humans untill they know they are being hunted. Out of season a person could run up on a flock of turkey's and beat them all with a golf club (note: this would be highly against the law and serious fines and jail time.) In Season is a different story. As the slightest noise will send them running/flying away in a split second
