Sounds like a whole lot of carbs to me.

Down 36 lbs since the end of Feb. Hit the 300lb barrier last week and blew it away, down to 295.

I've put on 8 lbs in the last two weeks and need to understand why.

LOL! I don't know. The good news is I didn't buy three boxes of corn flakes today. The bad news is I couldn't buy any because my local Meijer had NONE on the shelves. That's right, a Meijer store had no boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes in stock. Perhaps I have run them dry. I did buy one box of the Meijer brand corn flakes and have nearly polished off the whole box. It'll be gone by tomorrow. I reckon I'll have to run to Kroger sometime tomorrow to buy some Kellogg's corn flakes. This craving is incredibly odd. And, yes, I've Googled it. Nothing there I could find that applied to me or nothing particularly alarming. Just a strange random craving of unknown origin, I guess.

Went to Kroger today to replenish my supply of corn flakes. I bought one 18 oz. box of the Kroger brand flakes and a 24 oz. box of Kelloggs. The Kroger brand box is about 2/3 gone. So, the cravings are still there. The only thing stopping me from shoving more corn flakes in my mouth is that I'm stuffed.

I thought I would have cravings for Cheerios, but nothing like that. I think Zimm is right: maybe a doctor can help shed some light on this?

Its possible, too, that some change in brain chemistry is making this happen. Anything ... er ... hit you in the head recently? :)

LOL, no. No big blow to the noggin. The urge to eat corn flakes came out of the blue. Just, WHAM, and there they were. I needed corn flakes. The cravings might be subsiding. I ate less corn flakes today than I have in weeks. I sill ate a lot of flakes today, but it was certainly less than I have been shoving down my throat. We'll see how things are tomorrow.

Two days, a 24 ounce box gone. It's not subsiding. Luckily, I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'll mention the cravings to him to see what he thinks.

I mentioned my cravings to my doctor today and he was baffled. He even went to the Internet to see if he could find anything. The only thing he could think of was I might be experiencing an iron deficiency, so my body might crave a food with a high iron content(corn flakes are very high in iron). So, he ordered a blood test(doctors love taking blood). The results of that will come tomorrow since my appointment was in the afternoon. Also, tomorrow is shopping day, so I reckon I will buy two or three boxes of corn flakes. And just mentioning corn flakes here has caused the craving to kick-in big time, so I'm going to have to shove some in my mouth now before I go nuts.

I wouldn't worry. It's probably just a plateau. It may be time to try something new in your workout routine, or shave a few more calories. The down side of dieting is the lower the number on the scale, the lower the number of calories needed to maintain it. But most likely you'll see the scale inch downwards if you keep up what you're doing, just more slowly.

My schedule has become a little more hectic lately. Less "me" time. I've had a dozen people tell me "You just have to make it a priority." That's all well & good, but 3 hours of every day are spent taking care of my grandsons. Work & home obligations take the rest of the time, and my wife is in Mexico right now. I'm not complaining. I'm not trying to make excuses. But there are only so many hours in a day. I've been trying to keep close to the calorie counts, but the exercise has slipped. All this will change starting June 1. Until then, I soldier on.

IIRC it also has a pretty good amount of B-complex vitamins (B6, B12, ribo, folate, etc) so if you've been under stress lately those are vitamins that you might need a little extra of... plus the crunch of the flakes can help. ;)

One tip: if you do end up being low on iron, make sure you get plenty of vitamin C as that will make it easier for your body to absorb iron from the corn flakes.

I think you've hit on the reason that he and his doctor are confused, actually.

TTF, have you thought of offering your story to Kelloggs? Sounds like there's potential for a commercial.

I ran out of corn flakes a couple hours ago. I'm going to try to resist the urge to head on over to Kroger to buy a box or two. Maybe if I ignore the cravings, they'll go away. Or maybe the withdrawl will kill me.

In all honesty, it's true that not giving in to it will cause it to go away. My experience is that after three days of not giving into a craving (usually for sugar), it subsides. The first couple of days are sometimes pretty hard though.

On another note... I've stuck to my only one cup of coffee in the morning for about month now. I'm not really noticing any change in sleep, but my electric bill is about $10 less (I boil water on an electric stove for my 1 cup bodum press). I'm wondering if that's because I now use the stove less (it takes 3-4 minutes to boil the water, and I'd sometimes have 3-4 cups per day).

Got on the scale yesterday, I was at 192 lbs. Which means I am below 195 for the first time in over two years. Overall I am down 15-18 lbs..when I started making an effort to lose weight I was consistently between 207-210. It is amazing just how good losing 15 lbs can feel. New goal is 180.

Edit: The weight loss has made my golf swing a little better too, I have been hitting the ball further. It feels like I can come through much better.

Examine closely what is different about your diet or exercise behavior in the last month versus prior months and make the necessary adjustments. When you come to the conclusion that nothing is different, examine it again. It's got to be something.

I have also plateaued in the last month, within the 167 to 170 range. I know what my problem is, what I've been giving in to in the last month. I think it's because I'd gotten bored of the routine of the first four months and I've simply been slipping on my resolve. It's up to me to turn it around.

Corn Flakes Inventor John Kellogg Wanted to Sew Your Foreskin With Silver Wire
    Posted May 23, 2012 11:16am by HVnews

We know John Harvey Kellogg as the founder of the Kellogg’s cereal company and the inventor of corn flakes. However, around the turn of the 20th century, Kellogg became renowned for his work as an anti-masturbation crusader, prescribing unusual — and borderline sadistic — solutions to the menace of young boys and girls touching their privates.

And by “uncomfortable,” we mean that even reading about them will make your genitals retreat into your body and grow an exoskeleton.

I'm on the last day of a sweet-free week, and figuring that I might as well extend it another week. Why not? My jeans are already fitting a bit better in the waist. I have no idea how much I weigh though.

Last year I unofficially did weight watchers for a few months, my wife does it so she just figured out my points and I casually tried it. Lost about 30 pounds from May to June. Over the winter I gained about 20 of that back so 3 weeks ago I signed up with WW officially. I just do it online, no meetings or anything like that. I'm down 12. I think it's pretty easy to follow. Obviously with festivals and grad parties and cookouts, like today, it makes it harder, but that just means I have to make sure to get my exercise in this week (something else that's harder now that the gym is closing at 9:30 in the summer). It's silly because I can walk at the park but I like the whole routine of the gym bag, going up there, etc. It helps keep me there for 45 minutes without the temptation to just come back home. Walking 45 minutes at a 5 mph pace gives me almost as many activity points as a 5 mile run for my wife, she doesn't like that.

It's not rocket science with WW, just about portion control and resisting every piece of cake or snack that shows up at work. If anybody out there is wondering about it I recommend it. If you have 30-40 pounds you need to lose I think this will work. I do think the program is tougher once you get about 10 pounds above your target weight. I keep telling my wife that her problem is that she works out too much for WW and that their system isn't designed for active people. SHe transformed her life the last few years and now she does all the boot camps, runs marathons, etc. She goes to the gym 5 times a week, most days at 5:30 am. I believe when you do all that activity, both weight and aerobic, that your body needs more fuel. WW to me is more about people who are not working out nearly every day. But she won't listen to me.

Is there a place near you where she can get her body fat measured? I mean one that uses a tank, not the hand-held devices or calipers used at a lot of gyms. She may not need to lose weight at all at this point, if some of those pounds are because of muscle.

Hi Rob, the problem may actually be that she works out too much and doesn't get enough sleep. Your body needs recovery time so if she's hitting the gym pretty much every day she is not allowing for that recovery. Sleep is also extremely important. You say she gets up at 5:30am; how much sleep is she giving up to get up this early? Is she getting less than 7 hours a night? That alone could be a big contributor to not being able to drop the last 10. Insufficient sleep has been shown to lead to weight gain (I can vouch for that); so believe it or not sometimes sleep is actually more beneficial than exercise.

Those are very good points, Velma. Muscles need at least 48 hours of rest between workouts, which is why people often either alternate muscle groups every day, or do weight training every other day.

Meanwhile, I seem to be on a yellow/orange/leafy greens kick lately. My planned supper is a baked sweet potato which I'll have with spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower along with a pat of butter so that my body can absorb the vitamin A. I'm also having visions of a mixed green salad with sunflower seeds, mushrooms, and Italian dressing.

    Weird.

I never had a huge sweet tooth, but about a year ago I stopped with all the sugary and Doritos like food (artificial seasonings, MSG), and all the other 'plain' foods started having tons of flavor. Now the foods with sugar added taste off to me and it's real easy avoid it and maintain weight without worrying too much about how much I eat. And it tastes good.

I finally got around to switching my summer clothes from my trunk to my dresser, and putting my winter clothes away. This meant of course that I had to try on said summer clothes, which I've been dreading but.... it appears that I've been a bit harsh on myself. My 'skinny' shorts are a bit tight but I can get them on, and even my two piece bathing suits look ok. It looks like getting back into my tougher workout routine (since I'm finally starting to feel benefits from my sinus surgery) should be enough, in addition to keeping away from sweets aside from special occasions.

Just guessing, but I think it might be easier to lose weight fast when you are way overweight because your body feeds on its own fat while you stick to diets. But once you get within shouting distance of your target, your body has less fat to feed on and you get more deep down body hungers that are hard to ignore at lower weights.

When I was over 180 I had no problem sticking to my diet and feeling OK. Once I got under 170 the deep down body hungers started taking over.

Generally speaking, the closer you get to your target weight, the closer the calories you take in is to the calories needed to maintain your weight. That's one reason that people often cut their daily caloric intake as their weight goes down.

Your body weight may also be shifting... so paying attention to how your clothes fit may tell you that you're still making progress even if the number on the scale won't budge.

For the first time in weeks, I woke up yesterday not craving corn flakes. Today, same thing. I think the craving has left my system. I've lost one pound in those two days. I put on about 15 pounds with my corn flakes craving. I'm probably one of the few who put on 15 pounds and had his cholesterol go down. I guess it was better than craving Crisco or hot dogs.
