BLACKSBURG, Va. — A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech this morning, killing at least 21 people and wounding at least 21 more before he was killed, police said.

The university has told students to stay inside and away from windows as police sweep it and work to establish whether the gunman acted alone.

On its Web site, the school reported that the shootings happened at opposite ends of the 2,600-acre campus -- at West Ambler Johnston, a coed residence hall that houses 895 people, and at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

The university said there were multiple victims. Government officials with knowledge of the case said there were seven to eight other “casualties.”

All entrances to the campus were closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.

“There’s just a lot of commotion. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on,” said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.

Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode’s resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.

“They had us under lockdown,” Kanode said. “They temporarily lifted the lockdown,
the gunman shot again.

“We’re all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what’s going on,” Kanode said.

Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, “Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible.”

It was second time in less than a year that the 26,000-student campus was closed because of a shooting.

In August 2006, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the campus area. A sheriff’s deputy involved in the search was killed on a trail just off campus.

The suspected gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

Norris Hall is an engineering building but estrepe is in the civil engineering department. I Googled it and the civil program is in Patton Hall.

Hopefully he wasn't around any of that.

I don't think tiger paw paw was voicing his annoyance that estrepe hadn't checked in yet. He was just saying that it would be nice to know that he's okay.

Well I doubt he's just calling family and friends and saying "I'm ok" and then hanging up.

We dont know how involved he could be in this. He could be a witness, he could have friends who were harmed, or he could be perfectly fine and isolated.

I kinda hate to say this seeing as how this is sort of a home for all of us and that we've all become pretty close knit over our love of sports and shared experiences, but motownsports probably isnt the first thing on his mind at the moment. If he doesnt check in at some point today, then I'd be worried because I know he'd think to check in with us at some point. But give the guy at least several hours to sort out the confusion and for him to make sure that both himself and the people he cares about are ok....

I think it's assumed that that would be the first thing he'd do, obviously. He's also going to find out if any of his friends were involved also. Plus he may not even have access to a phone or computer right now. Paw Paw was just saying it would be good to hear from him.

I know anyone who coudl do this is obviously unstable anyway, but I wonder what set it off. Is it exam time there? The shooter must have either been an engineer or had ties with an engineer (bf/gf).

I may be alone in thinking this, but its shocking things like this don't happen a bit more often. Some people just get themselves in way over their head at college and have NO idea how to deal with. The pressure nowadays is immense, especially in a field like engineering.
