Xbox 360 help....
My boys birthday is coming up in a few days, and he really wants a Xbox 360. I am nervous about spending the money on that system, with all the red ring of death complaints. I dont want it to be a bigger headache than needed. We have a PS3, but he wants this for his room. He wont play it all that much, just when there is nothing else to do, or no friends around.
So how many of you have one, and what are the problems that you experienced with them? Appreciate the help.

My brother has had to replace three XBox 360 consoles because of that problem, but luckily Microsoft replaced them for free, which you can do on their website when it breaks.
I believe the 360's now have kind of fixed that problem though. MS has released two different versions of the 360 and it seems to not have been a problem for the last year or so.

I've got a 360, and got it probably about 3-4 years ago. The only problem I had with it had nothing to do with the Red Rings of Death (knock on wood), but sent it in to Microsoft & it was fixed & sent back for free.
I guess when it comes down to it, I wouldn't really deter anyone from getting a 360 just because of the Red Rings issue, just because even if it does happen, Microsoft fixes it for free. Might kind of suck for the time that it takes to get fixed, but even so, if he already has a PS3 & he might not even be using it a ton, it doesn't sound like it would be as big of a pain as it was for someone like me, who did use it a decent amount & didn't really have anything else to use. I mean, it was kind of to the point that we were thinking of breaking out the PS2 and/or Dreamcast just to kill time when there was nothing to do.

Is the problems covered by warranty when you buy the 360, or do you have to buy the extended service plan to get covered?

I've had a 360 for about 3 years. I got the "red rings" once about a year ago, sent it in, had it fixed for free, and haven't had any problems since. From what I've read, most of the hardware problems that the 360 experienced were due to small heatsinks, and most of the newer units produced now use larger ones that have prevented a lot of the problems.
I love the 360. I know that all of the 3 major consoles now support online gaming, but I've used Xbox Live for about 4 years now, going back to the Xbox, and have always been pleased with it. The Wii hardly has any games that utilize online multiplayer. And for a library of games, I think the Wii and Xbox probably have about double the titles that the PS3 does... not sure the reasons, but apparently game designers are not doing as much for the PS3, probably because of its smaller market penetration.

I think the lack of games for the PS3 could be because it's much more powerful than the other two, and a lot of companies don't really have the resources to utilize the power the PS3 has. For example, Madden/NCAA and whatnot are developed for the 360 and then ported over to the PS3 because if it was done the other way around, most of the stuff wouldn't work on the 360. So it might be because you have to kind of make it an exclusive title for the PS3 if you want to get the most out of your game.

if you want to unleash the full power of the ps3 just get the show :)
I have a 360 on craigslist with 12 games but no one wants to buy it. No issues with the console just don't want to own two consoles anymore, especially since I only play one video game these days.

Last I heard, once the Red Rings problem broke out, every Xbox already had a one year warranty, but they extended all warranties to three years. Not sure if that's still the case, but I'd assume if you did run into problems with it, the Red Rings should at least be covered for three years from when you bought it.

One of the few games that are exclusive to PS3 that makes me wish I had one. Still, I'm pretty happy with the selection of games that are on the 360.

Never had a problem with mine. I also like the wider selection of games compared to the PS3.

I bought a refurbished 360 on ebay in January of 2008 for 150 bucks. The original one sent to me had the RROD upon arrival, but the company just had me send it back and sent me a new one. That one worked great, I never had any problems with it up until it being stolen in March. I'm not much of a gamer, so 12 hour sessions were never my thing but an hour or two a few days a week was pretty common.

If you buy a 360 made this year it should have the jasper chip which supposedly fixed the heat issue, that caused the Red Ring of Death. So if you buy one, buy a new one. I have a 2009 version with the Jasper chip and have had no problems.
