Mud Hens take a walk in 11th, sweep Lynx

    By DAN HICKLING
    SPECIAL TO THE BLADE

OTTAWA, Ont. - Their "getaway day" exit took a little longer than planned.

Nevertheless the Mud Hens still wrapped up their eight-day road trip in satisfying style yesterday, prevailing in a 6-5 test of wits with the Ottawa Lynx in 11 innings before 2,428 at Lynx Stadium.

With two away, Ryan Raburn coaxed a bases-loaded walk off Ottawa reliever Aaron Rakers (4-3), forcing in Brandon Harper with the deciding run.

"We got it done today," said Harper, who crushed a leadoff double off the base of the center-field wall to set matters in motion. "Guys keep playing. We don't ever quit."

Toledo wound up going 6-2 on its swing, which began in Rochester, and swept the four-game set with the Lynx.

"We don't blow a couple leads in Rochester," said Hens manager Larry Parrish, "we sweep the road trip. But we don't want to be greedy. We'll take 6-2, go home, and be happy."

The Hens hit the season's midpoint with an excellent 44-28 mark, and are locked in a tight struggle with both Indianapolis and Columbus in the West Division playoff race, and are just about where Parrish hoped they'd be.

"We've got some guys who are struggling," he said, "but if we get them going, we could be a real strong club."

Curtis Granderson put Toledo up 1-0 with a first-inning solo homer off Dave Borkowski. Granderson has knocked in runs in four of the last five games.

Ottawa countered with an unearned run off Hens starter Kenny Baugh in the bottom of the second, but Toledo regained the lead with a run in the fourth, then got two more in the fifth on Marcus Thames fifth homer.

Thames teed off on a slider from Borkowski, pulling it over the left field wall, making it 4-1.

Ottawa later edged to within 5-3, then got two on with none out.

Vic Darensbourg came on and fanned lMidre Cummings before handing off to Jason Karnuth. Karnuth got the final two outs to silence the Ottawa uprising.

Karnuth got two out in the ninth, but couldn't seal the deal.

He served up three hits in that frame, including an RBI single by Ed Rogers that brought in Tim Raines Jr. with the tying run.

Fisher Cats scratch out split with 'Wolves

    From staff reports

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Clint Johnston led the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 7-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Thursday afternoon at Fisher Cats Ballpark.

Johnston, a first baseman, went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs to help New Hampshire earn a split of their four-game series.

After losing the first two games of the series, the Fisher Cats rallied Wednesday to defeat Erie 6-5.

The SeaWolves (40-33) conclude their 10-game road trip with a three-game series at Binghamton today through Sunday.

Erie, which is 5-2 on its road trip, collected 11 hits off of three New Hampshire pitchers Thursday but only could manufacture one run - shortstop Scott Tousa's fifth-inning solo home run.

Tousa went 3-for-4 and has shown a lively bat for the SeaWolves since his promotion to Erie on Sunday from Class A Lakeland.

Leading 3-1, the Fisher Cats scored four runs in the seventh off of Erie relievers Mark Johnson and Corey Hamman. Center fielder Miguel Negron, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, drove in a run with a single. Johnston added a two-run double and DH Ron Davenport an RBI single.

Erie right-hander Jeremy Johnson suffered the loss and dropped to 5-4, despite keeping the SeaWolves in the game.

He allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings, struck out four batters and had no walks.

New Hampshire catcher Erik Kratz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the second that staked the Fisher Cats to a 1-0 lead.

Johnston hit a two-out, solo homer in the third to put New Hampshire up 2-0.

After Tousa homered in the fifth, Kratz got the run back with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, making it 3-1.

Erie right fielder Byron Gettis and catcher Mike Rabelo each had two-hit games.

Thursday's game was the final game between Erie and New Hampshire this season. Erie won the season series 4-3.

The SeaWolves are 23-12 on the road this season and 17-21 at home.

Bannister, 24, the son of former major leaguer Floyd Bannister, leads the Eastern League in wins and ERA and is third in strikeouts (83) and third in innings pitched (932/3). Bannister is 1-0 vs. Erie this season, earning the win in a 10-0 victory April 12 at Jerry Uht Park. For the third straight series against the Mets, Erie will not face Bannister.

    A new falf...familiar ending
Lansing takes late lead, beats Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - The second half of the season began for the Whitecaps in a way that many first-half games wound up.

West Michigan rallied for single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to grab a 2-1 lead, but Lansing retaliated for three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 advantage on the way to a win by the same score.

Dallas Trahern pitched six innings for the Whitecaps and took the loss, but had allowed only one run going into the seventh. Trahern faced three batters in the seventh, each of whom came away with hits. Christian Snavely knocked a game-tying single to center before Trahern left the game with the score tied, 2-2.

Ian Ostlund came on in relief. The lefty allowed a sacrifice fly to center by Eugenio Velez that put Lansing on top for good, 3-2.

Lavon Lewis followed Ostlund and surrendered the RBI single by Curtis Thigpen that made the score, 4-2. All three runs in the inning were charged to Trahern.

Luis Sabino and Josh Lee led off the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles which put the Whitecaps on top, 2-1.

West Michigan tied the game, 1-1 on an error by third baseman Jason Armstrong in the fifth that allowed Nick McIntyre to score from second base.

McIntyre doubled prior to the run. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk. A first inning single stretched McIntyre's hitting streak to 15 games.

Whitecaps newcomer Freddi Dolsi pitched shutout innings in the eighth and ninth. He allowed one hit and struck out one.

Four Lansing pitchers combined to for 13 strikeouts. The last eight Whitecaps hitters in the game were retired in order.

O-Tigers spread it around in victory

    O-TIGERS ’05

    Staff Report

Jorge Patino’s RBI triple keyed a three-run eighth inning as the Oneonta Tigers pulled away for an 8-1 New York-Penn League victory at Tri-City on Thursday.

Leadoff hitter Patino finished with two hits and three runs for the O-Tigers, who took advantage of four ValleyCats errors to bounce back from Wednesday’s 7-2 loss at home.

Four Oneonta pitchers combined on a six-hitter. Starter Burke Badenhop threw three shutout innings, but Jose Fragoso (1-0) earned the victory in relief. Fragoso struck out three and allowed one run in two innings.

The O-Tigers led, 2-0, after three innings and added two runs in the fifth. Catcher Joel Roa walked to lead off and Patino was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Roa then scored on Brandon Timm’s groundout. Ryan Roberson drove Patino home on a fielder’s choice, giving Roberson his team-leading sixth RBI of the season.

In the eighth, Roa hit an RBI single and Patino followed with his run-scoring triple to right. Patino came in on a wild pitch to make it 7-1, and Oneonta scored its final run in the ninth.

Designated hitter Timm had two hits and two RBIs, and center fielder Clete Thomas went 1-for-2 with an RBI and three walks.

Oneonta (2-1) starts a three-game series with Lowell at 7 tonight at Damaschke Field.

So Pena had a single, 2 walks and an HBP in 6 PAs.

His AAA avg/obp/slg is now .333/.444/.493

Could this be an Inge-style turnaround at age 27?

I know a lot of you guys have written him off but I still think he should be watched over the next month. For one thing, Young or Shelton could get hurt. Or, Pena could have value as an LH pinch-hitter and late-inning defensive specialist.

Frankly, if he can hit like this for another month, I think he would help the Tigers more than Smith or Gomez currently are.

Edit: I'm going to post this in the Tigers forum.

Why bring Espinosa up if you're not going to play him?
the above opinion is not respected by Deleterious

I don't get it either Buddha. It is absolutely stupid to make Espinosa sit on the bench for a non-prospect like Wise or Hooper.

    New players see Whitecaps lose

    Friday, June 24, 2005
    By Steve Vedder
    The Grand Rapids Press

COMSTOCK PARK -- The West Michigan Whitecaps are a team in transition.

The Whitecaps made a series of roster changes before Thursday's 4-2 loss to Lansing at Fifth Third Ballpark with Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski in attendance.

All the turnover leaves the Whitecaps with three new pitchers, one of whom debuted Thursday against Lansing in the opening game of the season's second half.

Also, All-Big Ten catcher Chris Robinson, the Tigers' third round draft choice from Illinois, was in uniform Thursday. A native of Canada, he hasn't been assigned anywhere by the Tigers while he awaits his work visa.

The Tigers' fifth round pick in the draft, power-hitting first baseman Jeff Larish of Arizona State, is free to sign after the Sun Devils were eliminated from the College World Series on Thursday. The Tigers probably will send Larish to either West Michigan or high-A Lakeland once he signs.

"Change is part of the game, that's the way it is," manager Matt Walbeck said. "There is constant evolution. ... It's the minor league system."

The Whitecaps, who went 33-27 in the first half, showed signs of life before this week's all-star break by winning five of seven. But they let a 2-1 lead slip away in the seventh inning Thursday against Lansing. The Lugnuts scored three runs on four hits, an error, a sacrifice fly and two walks.

All the change can make it tough for some players to focus on the game as they wait to see if they're next to be moved, said Nick McIntyre, who had two hits Thursday.

"It just depends on the player how he acts," said McIntyre. "Some guys some might frantic about a slump. Other guys will feel a little more competitive and step up. It's different from person to person."

P.J. Finigan, one of the new-arrival pitchers, said he didn't mind joining a team in transition.

"The players have made it easy to come in here and fit in since day one," he said. "I definitely want to get in get the job done whenever I'm called on."

Freddy Dolsi, another new pitcher, pitched two scoreless innings in relief Thursday.

Walbeck said the loss to the Lugnuts was a disappointment after ending the first half strong.

"When you have 13 strikeouts and only two walks, it's definitely a step back," he said. "We're hoping for consistency on a regular basis."

Because the organization is mistakenly convinced that DeWayne Wise isn't the worst baseball player on the face of this planet...

I can't believe Wise, Hooper, and Hessman are getting so much playing time when we have a lot of guys who deserve it more.

I also can't believe that Derek Nicholson stole all that playing time from Eric Rodland during the first half of Lakeland's season.
