Default The AFL Thread

Nov. 10:

Iorg went 1-4 w/ a run and k
Wells went 0-1 in a PH appearance.

Robbie Weinhardt continued his awesome fall:

3 ip, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 bb, 6 K'S! (and a save)

Peo Saguaros vs. Peo Javelinas - November 10, 2009 | MLB.com: Gameday

AFL overall: 15 ip, 15 h, 8 r, 6 bb, 25 k, 4.80 ERA

More telling, last 5 appearances: 14 ip, 5 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 17 strikeouts

Minor League Baseball: Stats: Player
Not bad for a hitter's league.

Weinhardt has been dominating the last 2 .5 weeks. A very encouraging sign. Perpsective alert. Fein was dominating last year in the AFL, how hittable did he look at the major league level in 2009.

Leaving after work tonight to try to make the game tomorrow, and the game after. Anyone know anything in the area that's cool? Or have any advice on AFL enjoyment?

Off topic a bit, but I still think Fein could become a useable middle relief pitcher.

Unless he learns to throw a much tighter breaking pitch and a cutter no he won't.

Agreed - his pitches looked straight to me - very straight. He does appear to have decent control, but he needs another wrinkle to become a plausible relief option, IMHO.

Wells reaches on an error and is then pulled for a pinch runner (gameday says "Injury Delay")...

Was at the game today. He landed funny when his foot hit first base. He ended up hobbling off the field under his own power and seemed to be walking gingerly the rest of the day.

Mark..think Wells can make enough contact against major league pitching to be a contibutor?? He looked scared, confused and overmatched last spring. It concerned me.

Kind of Clevlen'ish at the plate.

I think he'll be better than Clevlen was, but I think contact will be an issue. His defense, arm, power, and ability to draw a few walks will keep him in the big leagues for a while.

So the difference between the two is primarily, Wells has a better pitch recognition and will draw a few more walks, If you eliminate the walks they seem pretty similar as players.

They are reasonably similar. I think Wells has a better head for the game, better makeup, and a little more motivation/drive.

Could Casper play MLB average or better defense in CF?

He could be an averge defender in CF (even in CoPa), and be an above-average to plus defender on the corners.

How would you compare his defense to Granderson..I know Wells arm strength is vastly superior.

I think he'd be a tick behind Granderson defensively, but he wouldn't be bad out there. You are correct, his arm is way, way better than Granderson....it's a true plus tool.

As for his ceiling, I don't think he's an MLB star, but I do think he could become a solid regular on most teams.

Do you think Casper would benefit more from regular AB in the minors or part-time AB in the majors in 2010?

At this point, he is, what he is in my mind....he's going to have to curtain the strikeouts a bit to really be a regular for me, but I think that work can be done in either role....

Like I said...Wells has more power than Rowand.

This is another example of why I hate comps...I absolutely hate them.

The Jav's look to clinch their division this afternoon with Scot Drucker on the hill.

Cale Iorg is batting 9th.

(no Wells today)

Drucker is a nice outing today:

3 ip, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 walks (well, that part isn't so nice), 3 strikeouts.

For what it's worth, I was happy to read some encouraging things about Weber in Micro's newest TigsTown report!
