Default Wolverines ranked #8 in initial AP Poll

No way they should be that high, I'd put them somewhere in the lower teens. They're also ranked 8th in the AP Poll.

I'd also like to know who voted us #1.

    Excellent news.

Seems a bit high but what the hell.

Terrible news. Early polls are ridiculous, let alone pre-season.

That's too high, and preseason polls are dumb, but as long as we're playing by this dumb system, it can only help. If they lose once, early (hmmmmm), they won't drop too far, and there will be plenty of time to climb back up over the course of the season.

Obviously too high, but still cool to see.

It's impossible for coaches to know well the relative merits of all D1 schools, particularly before the season even starts, so they end up casting votes for legacy programs as a default. That's partly why Notre Dame and Florida always show up in these preseason polls, too, regardless of how they finished up the previous year.
But tonight, I say we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

Bingo. Coaches should not have a vote. It was true in January 1998, and it's true now. Only the writers, if you're going to rank by voting at all, which is dumb on a larger scale.

Writers are not any more qualified.

High name recognition in Denard, see what Hoke did in year one, probably failed to take the schedule into effect.

Not for nothing, but high rankings for legacy schools make their early season games more attractive on TV, leading to higher ratings estimates and more ad revenue for networks. Not that the coaches are voting with that explicitly on their minds, but it is a nice side benefit at least of schools like Michigan and Notre Dame and Florida being "over-ranked" early in the season.
