I wish Israel would have made it to pool play. They had a chance to be pretty solid. They could have had Shawn Green, Gabe Kapler, Kevin Youkilis, Ryan Braun and Ian Kinsler. All guys who were eligible to join the team. I think only Green and Kapler played in the qualifying rounds, though. Would have been fun.

I don't think it will ever be a big event because there is no way to time it so the best players in the world are all playing and in peak form. The big show is the MLB season and that's not going to change. I actually hope the WBC never does become a big event because tournament play does not fit baseball well. It's fun to see players and match-ups that you don't normally see, but I think that's as far as it needs to go.

Well, then, you just might as well strangle the thing. Well, except for the money involved.
Theoretically, I think that for this to have any ghost of a chance to be a premier event like a World Cup is, it is not as necessary for players to be in peak form as it is just to get all the stars to participate. This is setting aside any consideration for timing and injury potential, of course--those practical considerations are always going to hamper the growth potential of the thing. But to my way of thinking, the first order of business must be to get all the stars to play in it. Absent this, no amount of strategic timing or venue optimization is going to make this thing any more than a sort of interesting diversion. But tonight, I say we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

They can strangle it as far as I'm concerned. I'll watch some games out of curiosity, but there is zero chance I'll ever think of it as a premiere event. I just see it as a bunch of exhibition games that break up the tedium of spring training every three years and I would bet the majority of fans feel the same way. Baseball already has a premiere event - the MLB season and playoffs. I don't see how the star players can ever be involved in the WBC to the extent they would need to be to make this a premiere event without there being a conflict with the main event.

I agree. MLB teams should have to give permission for their expensive players to participate. Could you imagine a major injury to a key player? Something season-ending?
It could ruin an entire season for a team. But, for all I know, teams may already be able to tell players they can't play in this. I wouldn't want my $20 million player taking a chance of being injured.2013 AAT: Brennan Smith

The Canadians have this wrapped up. Why don't they just give us the trophy, or the Target gift certificates or whatever it is, right now?
I agree with Lee, this is a yawner. I'd draw a comparison here to the Olympic hockey tournament, which happens in the middle of the NHL season and for which team owners have to run the risk of losing star players to injury. Why do they do it? Because it's a big freakin' deal, because NHL fans in North America want affirmation that the Canadians and Americans in the NHL are better than the Swedes and the Russians and the Czechs (all of whom are also in the NHL). And because a guy like Ovechkin can say that he's playing for Russia in Sochi whether the NHL likes it or not. It's a big emotional deal.
Baseball? Globally, who gives a crap? When Shawn Green and Gabe Kapler can play for Israel you know it's a joke. Soccer, hockey, rugby, cricket...those are sports that can stir up international passions. As for baseball, if they cancelled the WBC and didn't issue a press release how many of us would even notice? I know that I would not.

I like the WBC because its competitive baseball when baseball is otherwise not televised but for the life of me I cannot understand why they don't do it in November. You'd think that Bud Selig, who is at the Vanguard of the whole thing, would be smart enough to have his MLB players play the games and then have their off season recovery/work out programs.

The Venezuelan team looks damn good on paper. An infield of Andrus, Asdrubal Cabrera, Sandoval and Miggy is down right scary. The outfield of Parra, CarGO and Prado is really good as well. Then they have King Felix and Annibal at the top of their rotation. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they won it all.

I went to the Canada USA game at Skydome/Rogers Centre last time around. It was a good time. Grandy played Center for USA, and I remember Youk and Votto going deep. 18 year old Brett Lawrie got in the game late as a pinch runnner. There was a funny thread on MTS about us Canadians having an inferiority complex or something like that. Good times.

Look, Poland ain't invited again. Until Team Polski makes it, it is merely a glorified softball tournament. That's just my refined opinion of it all.

Right now the KOR-NED game sounds sort of like an Indians game. Instead of someone out there with a big drum, they are out there with a whistle.
