Default "Throwback" Rays uni's for June 30 game...

Rays prepare to go faux retro for home game

    Versus Detroit on June 30th...

I absolutely love them! Brilliant move on their part.

Yeah, I gotta say they nailed it. That looks like it would have certain fit in perfectly in a by-gone era.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole uniform, but I like the jersey itself a lot.

    "Throwback"???

Can a team that's been in existence for, what, about 15 years really have a "throwback"?

..... and if they do, shouldn't their unis say "DEVIL rays"??

The Rays are the gimmicky-est organization in baseball. With that said, I don't hate those fake throwbacks. And the Detroit away uniforms in that picture are WAY cooler than the current aways. I wish they still used those.

throwback? no - more like throw up. There's nothing worse than false nostalgia.

I wouldn't say they are trying to create a nostalgic atmosphere, just a fun evening out at the park. Cool idea, cool jerseys.

That is an ugly uniform, but it fits nicely into the 70s which is the point.

It seems forced and silly. The uniforms would have never been those colors during that era (the primary and secondary color are too similar.) Back in the 70's, the low quality of sports broadcast film and equipment and lack of color televisions in the whole is what mandated the worst of the awful color schemes. If you're going to go ugly you should go all out.

Also I stand by my assertion that if the Tampa Bay Rays cared about a "fun night at the ballpark" they'd get a better ballpark that was actually fun to be at. They can even have a garish moving statue behind the fence in center field to keep up with the Joneses...

I see the uniforms as fun because it is a game. Wild/mild it doesn't matter to me. Some people need a professional look to their favorite team and that is fine but once in awhile you can let loose.

The hat logo looks like the Brewers logo of the 70's & 80's. The colors are a cross between the Brewers and Mariners (& Royals?). The font and layout on the jersey looks like it was straight lifted the Padres'.

I like it. It shows that there is still a sense of humor in professional sports. I agree, however, that they should be the "Devil Rays."

I suspect I am in the minority, but I never cared for the 80's Tigers road uniforms. In fact, I guess I would go so far as to say that of the last 50 years, I'd probably like the 68 Tigers' road uniforms the best, and I really don't care for those, to be honest.

My favorite package of uniforms would probably be 1935.

I hated the 70s/80s road uniforms. I would also like the 1935 road unis, which they could achieve today largely by dumping the orange and white piping on the current unis.

I believe it was here that I read over the past few years when the Rays were participating in a throwback night they would copy uniforms from other teams in the area that had played in the past (minors, majors, whatever) to create their throwbacks since they really don't have much of a history as far as uniforms go. This is rather unique to me, and frankly I don't think it's all bad. I find it fairly creative, and because they don't look half bad they'll probably sell well (assuming they plan to do that).
