    3 Homeruns... and 7 Strikeouts.

Definitely has power, but also has the most K's so far. Should be interesting to see how he develops over this year.

19 games in to the season now, and here are some numbers Cespedes:

Homeruns: To date: 5, expected for season at this rate: 43
    Hits: 18, 153
    Walks: 8, 68
    Strikeouts: 22, 187

That K number is quite high, but if he continues to put up the other offensive numbers it looks like he's going to be a success. I suppose the question is if:

    1. MLB pitchers will learn his hitting pattern better as they see him more and will be able to attack him better

    -or-

    2. If Cespedes will learn MLB pitcher better as he sees them more and cut down on the K's.

From what I've read about him, he's developing a pretty nice approach up there. A line of .260/.340/.500 with his decent defense and ~25 steals/~25 HR is really good. Similar numbers to Nelson Cruz.

    .279/.338/.507 (.845)

Pretty good looking player. Seems to be hurting a lot and I wonder if that's a trend or fluke. If he's healthy next year I bet he puts up huge numbers. I really wish we'd have gotten this guy.

I'm gonna just bump this and second what Yoda says above. I really wanted this guy and I think we blew it to some degree. We probably could have had something like Edwin Jackson,Cespedes and Pena instead of Prince. I love Prince and think he's relatively worth his contract, but thats not the point.

I'm not so confident he'll keep this up in the long term. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets exposed more over time. He's got talent, sure but do does Delmon Young.

He is better than Delmon at every facet of baseball.

Yeah, I suspect that if we didn't go after Prince and instead used that money for other players we would not have targeted a first baseman. Instead we would have looked at someone to replace Inge at third.

There's also a lot of other interesting things to take into consideration. For instance would we have been comfortable in the off season thinking that Cespedes would replace the production of VMart? What thirdbasemen were available and how much would they have cost us?

Honestly, one of the nice things about this season has been the discovery of how well Cabrera can actually play third. (Not saying he's great, just that he's better than I think many of use expected or hoped for.) Likely this never would have been discovered if we didn't sign Fielder.

I apologize if this has already been posted, but I think it may have gotten lost in the shuffle during the post-season run:

The Tigers "had a de facto deal" with Yoenis Cespedes last winter, reports Peter Gammons for MLB.com, before the Tigers instead chose to sign Prince Fielder. Cespedes, of course, signed with the A's instead and now could play a role in the end of Detroit's season.
AL Central Notes: Cespedes, Boesch, Francona, Soria: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

I wasn't a huge fan of the Fielder signing at the time, so this is not complete hindsight, but I can't help wonder what might have been. If V-Mart doesn't go down, and we ink Cespedes, not only do I think we'd have been a better team in 2012, but we'd have been built much better for the future as well.
It's so damned hot out...milk was a bad choice.

I wish we'd have just let Young go and signed both, but oh well.

I wish we would've signed Beltran or Willingham and Cespedes. Of course V-Mart's injury happened after the first 2 signed so it's a hypothetical situation but if we would've spent our money on 2 of those 3 instead of Fielder I think we would be much better off short term and long term. In this situation our OF would be settled and Castellanos would still be at 3B, plus we would have better D at 1B and not be stuck with a quarter of a billion dollar contract to a 1B that can't run or can't field.
