True a 4 day lay off, hope they don't come back too relaxed, atleast this will help the players that have been banged up a bit this year.

Flying Tigers Split Games With Jupiter

By DAVID YATES
LEDGER CORRESPONDENT

Published: Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 12:46 a.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 12:46 a.m.
LAKELAND | The Flying Tigers split a Florida State League doubleheader with Jupiter at Joker Marchant Stadium on Wednesday night.

Lakeland won the opener, 9-3, and Jupiter took the nightcap, 3-0.

Thad Weber, L.J. Gagnier, Robbie Weinhardt, and Brendan Wise held Jupiter to seven hits in the first game, a continuation of a game interrupted by rain Tuesday. Weber threw two scoreless innings Tuesday, and Gagnier (3-2) followed with five innings of four-hit, two-run ball Wednesday.

The Flying Tigers blew open the game in the third with their largest single-inning outburst of the season. Audy Ciriano hit his second grand slam in the past two weeks, and Jeramy Laster capped a seven-run rally with his second home run.

Brian Schultz, who graduated from Lake Gibson High in 2003 and later attended Florida Southern College, pitched the ninth inning for Jupiter, surrendering one run. Schultz pitched and played outfield for the Braves and Mocs but has been used only as an outfielder in the Marlins organization.

"The Marlins drafted me as an outfielder, but I hope to pitch for them," said Schultz.

The Flying Tigers (18-20) could manage only two hits in the nightcap off Jupiter pitchers Kris Harvey, Steve Cishek (2-2), and A. J. Battisto (3rd save).

The teams meet at Marchant again tonight at 7.

As I drove in tonight an hour early, I was shocked to see thew parking lot so crowded. This had to be more than Thirsty Thursday's crowd. It was. Invitations to the local Chamber of Commerce and free food. Looked like we would have a big crowd tonight. Come game time I think 95% of the C of C invitees had already left without ever watching a pitch. This idea is a bust!

Rain Halts Flying Tigers Again

By DAVID YATES
Ledger Correspondent

LAKELAND | Rain continues to play havoc with Lakeland's May Florida State League schedule as a heavy thunderstorm suspended the team's game with Jupiter Thursday night.

Trailing 4-0, the Flying Tigers were coming to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Marchant Stadium grounds crew covered the field in preparation for a rapidly advancing cell.

The game will be resumed tonight at 5 and played to its nine-inning conclusion. Lakeland and Jupiter will then play a seven-inning second game to close out their four-game series.

Flying Tigers' starter Andrew Hess struggled from the start despite bringing a 2-2 record and a 2.50 ERA into the game. Jupiter scored two runs in the first inning with two outs when Michael Stanton doubled, Hunter Meese singled, and Brandon Tripp tripled.

The Hammerheads expanded their lead to 4-0 in the fourth on singles by Jamison Smith, Greg Burns, and Louis Ott, and an Osvaldo Martinez double.

Major league right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who is rehabbing with Jupiter, kept Lakeland scoreless through the first three innings. Sanchez threw a no-hitter for the Marlins against Arizona on September 6, 2006 but has been on the disabled list for much of the past two seasons.

Hammerhead Bats Break Out in Sweep

By DAVID YATES
Ledger Correspondent

Published: Friday, May 29, 2009 at 12:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 1:36 a.m.

LAKELAND | It is hard to imagine the team that Lakeland played in Friday night's Florida State League doubleheader is only one game above .500 and sports the weakest offense in the league.

The Jupiter Hammerheads (23-22) routed the Flying Tigers (19-22) twice, winning the opener, 10-1, and the nightcap, 9-3, before 610 fans at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Lakeland had not surrendered that many runs in a twinbill since Vero Beach scored 20 times in the two games played on May 26, 2006. The Dodgers collected 28 hits that night, but the Hammerheads banged out 35 hits Friday, including six doubles, one triple, and four home runs.

In the first game, Jupiter outfielder Brandon Tripp became the first FSL player to hit for the cycle since Jay Garthwait did it for Sarasota on May 13, 2006. Hammerheads' shortstop Oswaldo Martinez might have had an even bigger night, going 7-for-9, scoring twice and driving in a pair.

Seventeen of the 18 position players used by the Hammerheads had hits and 14 scored, a remarkable offensive showing for a team which came to Lakeland with the worst average (.217), the fewest runs (127), and the fewest hits (275) in the league.

Flying Tigers third baseman Michael Bertram doubled twice and tripled, the lone bright spot for Lakeland, which scored only four runs in the last 23 innings against Jupiter pitching. The Hammerheads took three of four from the Flying Tigers in the season's first inter-division series.

Lakeland will now travel to play Palm Beach in a four-game series.

I luckily only saw the second game but got to hear all about the first one from the people sitting around us. By the 4th and 5th inning of 2nd game the stands around us cleared out. We stayed but it was painful to watch.

I don't want to Monday morning QB but of things that went wrong, of which there were many, I can't figure out why they left SP Hoffmann in for so long, it obviously wasn't his night. They didn't even have anyone warming up while he melted down. It just seemed unusual.

Actually thinking back on it the whole game was unusual. The most entertaining thing about it was the home plate umpire was yelling back at the fans in front of us when they heckled his calls. And why both managers weren't ejected when they got in his face was a surprise. Anyway, better not to revisit this one.

I believe both Managers were correct in challenging the HP ump on the 1B and HP calls. This guy has no place in a blue uniform and both managers know it.

Tht said, I'm not sure where Barkett would begin to fix baseball bacics 101 for the guys last night. Oliveras' reaction catch was one of the few highlights for the LFT.

I 100% agree they were right to argue the bad calls on both sides. The discussions heated up quick both times with lots of arm gestures and yelling, I figured he would eject them to make a point, now that ump stands to get walked all over unless he asserts himself. Maybe another reason he shouldn't be wearing blue.

I will leave it at this, some players need to field a lot better..our pitchers are having to throw more because easy plays are not being completed..errors will not get you anywhere

White's Hit Lifts Lakeland over Palm Beach in 10

Published: Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 12:13 a.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 12:13 a.m.
WEST PALM BEACH | Right fielder Christopher White singled home Jeramy Laster in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Lakeland Flying Tigers to a 7-6 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals Saturday in Florida State League action.

The Flying Tigers finished with 10 hits, and White's hit salvaged the victory after the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the eight to tie the score, 6-6.

Brendon Wise pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season, and Scott Green hurled a scoreless 10th to earn the save.

Laster went 2-for-5 and his two-run homer in the top of the sixth gave Lakeland a 4-2 lead. Justin Henry and Michael Bertram also went 2-for-5 for Lakeland.

The Flying Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first. Bertram singled home Henry then later scored on Chris Carlson's double.

In the seventh, Santo De Leon scored on a groundout and Roger Thomas scored on a wild pitch to give Lakeland a 6-3 lead.

However, in the bottom of the eighth, Palm Beach scored three runs to tie the score. Thomas Pham doubled home the first run of the inning then later scored the tying run.

Flying Tigers Win With Solid Pitching

Published: Monday, June 1, 2009 at 12:01 a.m.

JUPITER | A trio of Lakeland pitchers limited Palm Beach to three hits leading the Flying Tigers to a 4-1 win over the Cardinals in a Florida State League game on Monday night.

Starter Charles Furbush gave up just two hits and one run in six innings of work.

He was relieved in the seventh by Lester Oliveros, who pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Robbie Weinhardt pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Lakeland scored twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth. Christopher White singled home what proved to be the two winning runs in the eighth. The Flying Tigers added two more in the ninth on a squeeze bunt by Roger Tomas and a wild pitch.

I notice the online Ledger corrected their mistake from the print version on Sunday night's game. In print they listed Michael Beltran both times.

Flying Tigers Can't Hold Lead, Fall to St. Lucie

Published: Friday, June 5, 2009 at 12:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 12:12 a.m.
LAKELAND - The Flying Tigers got off to a fast start but couldn't hold on to an early 3-1 lead and fell to St. Lucie, 5-3, in Florida State League baseball on Friday Night.

A Joker Marchant Stadium crowd of 633 saw Lakeland score single runs in the first, second, and third innings, but did not see a Flying Tigers runner cross the plate after that.

Justin Henry and Jordan Newton singled to lead off the first, and Henry scored when Kody Kaiser lofted a sacrifice fly to center field.

Santo De Leon, Chris Carlson, and Chris White all singled to start the second inning, but Mets starter Brant Rustich, who appeared to be on the verge of being taken out of the game, struck out the next three Flying Tigers to escape further damage.

Kaiser led off the third with a single and scored on an error after stealing both second and third base. Kaiser was the last man to score for the home team as Rustich and relievers Jose De La Torre and Emory Frederich limited Lakeland to a pair of hits over the last six innings of the game. De La Torre (2-3) picked up the win with three hitless innings of relief, and Frederick earned his fourth save by holding the Flying Tigers scoreless over the eighth and ninth.

"We let them off the ropes because we couldn't get that big hit in those early innings," Lakeland Manager Andy Barkett said.

FSL All-Star hurler Thad Weber pitched the first six innings for the Flying Tigers, giving up three runs, two earned, and six hits in a quality start. The loss went to reliever Brendan Wise (1-1), who surrendered a towering two-run homer to Kirk Nieuwenhuis with one out in the seventh.

Lakeland and St. Lucie will close out their four-game series tonight at Marchant at 6 in a game that will be followed by the usual Saturday night fireworks

LAKELAND - The Florida State League game between Lakeland and St. Lucie turned on one pivotal third-inning pitch as the Mets rallied past the Flying Tigers, 7-5, Saturday night.

A Joker Marchant Stadium crowd of 812 saw designated hitter Brahiam Maldonado rocket a 2-2 fastball from Lakeland reliever Brett Jacobson onto the berm in left field for a grand slam. Maldonado's shot turned a one-run deficit into a 7-4 lead.

The Flying Tigers took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Santo De Leon, Chris Carlson, Jordan Newton, and Chris White all singled and Mike Gosse walked.

But the Mets, who also erased an early Lakeland lead Friday, wasted no time wiping out the Flying Tigers' three-run advantage. Lakeland starter Charlie Furbush retired the first batter up in the third, Richard Pena, but by the time Furbush recorded another out, St. Lucie had scored twice and still had the bases loaded.

Furbush walked three Mets in and around singles by Zach Lutz and Fransisco Pena. He struck out Matt Bouchard, but Lakeland manager Andy Barkett summoned Jacobson from the bullpen to face Maldonado, who also homered in the second game of the series.

St. Lucie starter Nick Carr survived that rocky second inning to even his record at 2-2. Carr allowed only one hit in his final three innings on the mound and reliever Dylan Owen was just as effective, tossing four innings of two-hit, one-run ball, walking no one and striking out five.

That run came in the eighth when Jeramy Laster doubled and came around to score on a pair of ground outs. But Owen, who was making his first appearance in a St. Lucie uniform after being demoted from Class AA Binghamton, earned his first save.

Lakeland reliever Chad Linder was just as impressive, allowing the Mets only one hit and one walk in three scoreless innings.

The Lakeland Flying Tigers will pay tribute to Mark “The Bird” Fidrych on Friday, June 12 when the Flying Tigers take on the Sarasota Reds at Joker Marchant Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM and gates will open at 6:00 PM. The first 500 paid adults 15 and over will receive a Flying Tigers “The Bird” T-Shirt sponsored by Team Hammer. Kids eat free at all Friday home games as well. All kids 14 and under will receive a free hot dog, soda and bag of chips with paid admission.
Fidrych was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 1974 amateur draft and pitched for the Lakeland Tigers in 1975. He pitched in 17 games for Lakeland and compiled a 5-9 record with a 3.77 ERA. He allowed only 111 hits in 117.0 innings pitched.
Only one season later in 1976 at the age of 21, Fidrych became a baseball and pop culture phenomenon. He would win American League Rookie of the Year honors after winning 19 games and leading the American League with a 2.34 EAR and 24 complete games. He was an American League All-Star selection and finished second in the Cy Young award voting.
Fidrych was 6-foot-3 with long, frizzy light brown hair. He was nicknamed “The Bird” because of his resemblance to “Big Bird” on the television show Sesame Street. The Detroit baseball icon’s career and life ended too soon. Injuries derailed his promising career and he died in an accident at his home in Massachusetts in April at the age 54.

Box seats are $6 and reserved seats are $5 and seniors 55 and over and children 14 and under receive a $1.00 discount. Saturday tickets are an additional $1. Parking is FREE. Last Modified: Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12:54 a.m.
FORT MYERS | Glen Perkins pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1 and the Miracle got a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth from Evan Bigley in Game 2 to take two games from the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-0 and 5-4.

In Game 1, Perkins stifled the Flying Tigers' bats allowing only a single to Santo De Leon and a double by Chris Carlson. Perkins also struck out four and allowed only one walk.

Bigley homered in the Game 1, a solo shot off of Lakeland starter Matt Hoffman (2-2).

Lakeland's bats were much more productive in Game 2. The Flying Tigers pounded out nine hits and managed to take a 3-2 lead in the second inning before letting the Miracle go back ahead in the bottom of the second.

Trailing 2-0, the Flying Tigers got started with a two-out walk by Adrian Casanova. Christopher White followed with a RBI triple.

Kyle Peter scored White with a RBI single and after stealing second, Peter scored on a single by Justin Henry, giving the Flying Tigers their only lead of the day.

The Miracle came back in the bottom of the second to retake the lead on a two-run single by Steven Singleton.

Lakeland tied the game in the top of the fifth on a single by Jeramy Laster.

Trevor Feeney started for the Flying Tigers and went three innings. Feeney gave up four earned runs on five hits. Scott Green (3-1) took the loss for Lakeland in Game 2. Kyle Waldrop (3-2) got the win for Fort Myers.

The Flying Tigers finish up their series with the Miracle at 7 tonight.

NOTE: On Friday, the Flying Tigers play the Sarasota Reds at 7 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium and will give away T-shirts honoring Mark "The Bird" Fidrych to the first 500 adults. Fidrych, who died in April at the age of 54, won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1974, winning 19 games for the Detroit Tigers and leading the AL with a 2.34 ERA.

They missed something in that report. The ejection in the second game sounded quite dramatic, even for Andy, I didn't tune in until later in the game so I missed it on audio.

I was listening as it happened but I kept losing the signal. Something happened on a hit or at 1B and Hondo became argumentative. somehow Andy and the HP Ump became involved and after Andy returned to the dugout he was throwing equipment on the field. He was ejected either before or after the throwing incident. Then I heard Laster had an issue with a call by the HP Ump and apparently the Ump touched him causing Laster to slap him away. I don't think he made contact and no penalty. With my reception, Im not sure what really happened.

Flying Tigers Power Past Reds in Third

By DAVID YATES

LAKELAND | The Flying Tigers belted three home runs in the third inning and thumped the Sarasota Reds, 9-1, in Florida State League baseball on Friday night.

A Joker Marchant Stadium crowd of 710 saw Lakeland catcher Jordan Newton, first baseman Michael Bertram, and center fielder Jeramy Laster all go deep against Sarasota starter Scott Carroll (0-1) in the largest ballpark, dimension-wise, in the FSL.

It marked the first time since June 18, 2007, that the Flying Tigers had homered three times in one inning. Cameron Maybin, Will Rhymes and Wilkin Ramirez all went deep in the 6th inning of Lakeland's 3-2 win at Dunedin Stadium.

"I can't remember three home runs in an inning during my whole career," said Lakeland Manager Andy Barkett, who has been in professional baseball for 15 years.

Lakeland starter Charlie Furbush (4-3) and relievers Lester Oliveros, Brendan Wise, and Scott Green combined to give up just one run on eight hits.

Newton, Laster, Justin Henry, Santo Deleon, and Mike Gosse all had two hits.

The two teams play again tonight at 6.

Let me defend David Yates who normally writes the Home articles. This was not his work.

Be glad when David Yates returns to the Ledger. This article was on the June 24 game stating the Tigers win first game of the second half. Wrong. Second half started with the June 25 game at Sarasota.
