Rays infielder Will Rhymes passed out on the field moments after he was struck on the right wrist by a 95-mph fastball Wednesday night during Tampa Bay's 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.

But Rhymes is OK, according to the Rays, and said it's likely he passed out due to an "adrenaline rush" after the pain of the hit-by-pitch subsided.

Rhymes, struck by a Franklin Morales pitch in the eighth inning, was examined by trainers after he was struck by the pitch. He then proceeded to first base as the Red Sox changed pitchers.

BOX SCORE: Rays 2, Red Sox 1

But during the pitching change, Rhymes came off the bag and bent over at the waist. With first-base coach George Hendrick alongside him, Rhymes keeled over and crumpled to the Tropicana Field turf as Hendrick helped him down.

ESPN cameras appeared to show Rhymes gain consciousness as he lay on the turf. He was helped to a cart by medical personnel and taken from the field.

After the game, Rhymes spoke of becoming dizzy and nauseous after he walked to first.

"You saw the rest. I didn't get real far," Rhymes said.

On Morales' fastball, Rhymes said: "Firm. That one was firm. It literally hit me squre on the bone. But they say it's one of the strongest bones in the body. Thank God."

Rhymes, 29, signed a minor league contract with the Rays in January and entered Wednesday's game hitting .273 in 13 games. He was released by the Detroit Tigers after the 2011 season.

Will Rhymes on collapse: 'My lights went out'

I read a thing on his facebook page that said they asked him "do you know who you are" and he responded "yes, batman"....

gotta love ol Will. He'd kinda put you in the mind of Jim Walewander from back in the day. :classic:

Benoit? He's been good but hasn't had much success as a closer.

I know that the board has plenty of negative threads, but I promise I'm only going to demand one player be removed from the MLB roster. Tonight's game seems to be the perfect example of the Tiger's baffling love of horrible moves from the top down. Let's take a look:

Quote:

 B:0 S:1 O:1
Ryan Raburn ground bunts into a force out, pitcher John Danks to third baseman Brent Morel. Prince Fielder out at 3rd. Delmon Young to 2nd. Ryan Raburn to 1st.

It's the third inning and the game is already 3-2, why are you bunting??? Why??? Why would you think Ryan Raburn would be good at it? Mind boggling. Playing for one run in the third inning in the American League in the year 2012. How can things get any worse?

Quote:

Gerald Laird out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Brent Morel to second baseman Gordon Beckham. Jhonny Peralta to 3rd.

Alright! It's now a 5-2 game in the 5th inning, better go for that one run once more, oh what a shock, it didn't work! Neither bunt accomplished anything other than possibly costing the team a big inning in the 3rd. Wooo, let's ignore things like facts and logic and reason and go by the gut, bunting was a good idea when current managers were kids in the 1960s, it must still be great!

But hey, the Tigers are still winning, Smyly has given up a couple of homers but otherwise he's pitched well, and he's only thrown 69 pitches.

And then, Luke Putkonen enters the game.

There are so many things wrong with Luke Putkonen entering the game that I barely know where to begin. First of all, you have Jim Leyland, he's decided to pull his starter who is pitching reasonably well overall to put in a reliever. OK...and he's decided to put the worst pitcher on the team in a 1 run game against the heart of the other team's lineup...why? What possible reason is there to do this?

But much more importantly than that, why on earth is Luke Putkonen in MLB? Why is he even on the 40 man roster? Why is he even in the Tigers organization? It's mind boggling. Luke Putkonen has 0 good pitches, but he throws 95 miles per hour sometimes. It seems the Tigers continue to value the ability to throw hard over the ability to strike people out, not walk batters, and simply get outs.

Last season, Luke Putkonen was 25 years old, and he reached the highest level of his career so far, Double A Erie. In his 52 and 1/3 IP in Erie, he managed to put up a solid 1-7 record, with a 7.57 ERA, and an impressive 4.2 K/9 while walking a mere 4.0 batters per 9 innings. This is the pitching line of someone who should be out of professional baseball, but 13 mediocre innings later in AAA he's in MLB. 13 innings in which he still only struck out 6.9 per 9, at the age of 26 in AAA. Building on his career minor league numbers (mostly in A ball and below) of a 3.98 ERA and 6.0 K/9.

It's a joke that this guy is in MLB, and it makes it pretty easy to understand why the Tigers have not had a strong overall bullpen since 2006. Six straight years of mediocrity at best (and if anyone wants to argue 2011, let's please look back fondly on Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth pitching key innings in the LCS). Despite constant talk about the 'power arms' in the system, the Tigers can never find anyone from within to reliably get outs. Even this year you have:

Valverde - Big money FA signing, Benoit - Big Money FA signing, Dotel - Reasonably Money FA signing, Coke - Trade, Balester - Trade. Duane Below of all people is the only guy who's even slightly effective that actually came from Detroit.

In 2008 this organization used 10 of their first 14 draft picks on garbage pitchers, almost all of them relievers, none of them have done anything in MLB. Eventually, you have to be able to build a pitching staff with some ability to get outs. They've spent plenty of money, they've spent plenty of draft picks, they've made trades.

At some point, you have to have an offense that isn't built around the baffling combination of low speed, low obp hitters, and smallball. The Tigers certainly have the makings of a very good team, they have a strong rotation, excellent 3-4 hitters, and some solid hitters to put around them.

So, the point of this post if you're wondering, or if you just skipped to the last sentence because it looked long and boring, is this: Why do the Tigers continually, year in and year out, have the same glaring flaws as a team? What does it take for Leyland/Dombrowski to actually learn something? If you were the manager/GM what would you do?

Personally, I would release Putkonen immediately and strongly consider sending down Balester as well, and of course I'd never ever bunt. Ever. I'd tell any player that if he bunted he'd immediately be replaced in the lineup by Delmon Young, who would only be on the roster for that specific reason.

So, give us your top 5 suggestions.............

5. Have Leyland pull the batting order and entire lineup out of a hat.

4. Have everyone in the dugout and bullpen wear their rally caps, starting in the first inning.

3. Do the "Major League" VooDoo thing to ALL the bats.

2. Call up a starting lineup from the Mudhens for an entire series....(couldn't be much worse could it?)

1. Just like Leyland and McClendon........I really have NO idea what to do.

So I was listening to 96.1 yesterday and they brought up the question: "Why does everyone care about pitch count there days?" I guess McCarver mentioned it in the Fox game last weekend too.

The old line is: "[Insert number of years] ago nobody cared about Pitch Count. Why do we care so much now?"

I think the best answer to that is that they probably DID care about Pitch Count. Perhaps they didn't actually count the number of pitches, but they certainly looked at how much a starting pitcher labored in previous innings when deciding when/if to pull him or how long he pitched in a previous day when deciding whether to use a relief pitcher.

I'll add on to this that pitch count wasn't so easily accessible back [insert number of years] ago. Now we see it often shown on TV, or just about any online page. Previously, unless you were counting the pitches, you didn't know how many. Now you can pull out your phone and see it right there, or have it on a laptop screen as you're watching the same at home.

Personally, I love to look at pitch count. One of the ways I like to 'use it' is to see how effect the opposing pitcher is fairing against the Tigers. Generally I say: 10 pitch / inning is a great outing against us. 15/inn is average. 20/inn is poor.

Another week has come and gone, and the Hot Sheet is here. You are going see some new faces this week, but a few of the regulars are hanging out as well.

Side Notes:
~ Nick Castellanos was named the FSL Player of the Week for the week of 4/30-5/6.

Pitchers

1.
Tommy Collier – West Michigan Whitecaps SP

0-0, 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Tommy Collier is quietly having the best season-to-date in the organization. He now has 6 starts under his belt and sports some very solid numbers (2.12 ERA, 6.4 H/9, 5.6 K/9, 2.33 K/BB, 0.971 WHIP). Very deserving of the #1 spot this week.

2.
Fu Te Ni – Toledo Mud Hens SP

1-0, 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 K

This wasn’t Ni’s best week at keeping runners off the base. But he kept them from crossing the plate, and that has been hard for a lot of the other pitchers in our system this year.

3.
Andy Oliver – Toledo Mud Hens SP

1-0, 7.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K

Another solid week for Andy Oliver.

4.
Michael Torrealba - West Michigan Whitecaps RP

1-0, 5.0, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

After a fantastic 2011, Torrealba came out guns firing this year. This week’s earned run was the first one he has given up in 16.2 IP. He could be packing his bags for the sunshine state soon.

5.
Kevin Eichhorn – Lakeland Flying Tigers SP

1-0, 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Another solid outing by Kevin Eichhorn. He has been a staple on the Hot Sheet all year.

6.
Zack Segovia – Erie Seawolves SP
1-0, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Zack was close to getting some face time this week. But I am sure he’ll take this outing all year.

7.
Robbie Weinhardt – Erie Seawolves RP
0-0, 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Robbie Weinhardt is trying to get his groove back. It’s good to see him back on the Hot Sheet.

8.
Adam Wilk – Toledo Mud Hens SP
0-1, 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Adam Wilk is still throwing strikes in Toledo. The hit total is a little high, but still overall a solid start this week.

9.
Jacob Turner – Lakeland Flying Tigers SP
1-1, 11.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 14 K

Jake the Snake had one awesome outing and one terrible one this week. It is good to see him getting the inning total up though.

10.
Tyler Clark – Lakeland Flying Tigers RP
1 SV, 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Tyler Clark slips into the #10 spot this week. We have seen a lot of relievers make the Hot Sheet so far this year.

Batters

1.

Nickie C’s latest slash line, .415/.462/.585/1.047. Good Golly.

2.
13-30, .433 AVG, 2 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 0:12 BB:K

I haven’t been able to write James Robbins’ name down in the Hot Sheet very much in the 3 years I have been doing it. So I am thrilled to see him come in the #2 slot this week. Gotta get that K total down though.

3.

My AAT is still doing work in Erie!

4.
8-21, .381 AVG, 3 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 3:1 BB:K

Look who showed up on the Hot Sheet this week! Jamie Johnson has been struggling all year. So it is great seeing him in the top 5 this week.

5.
Eric Patterson – Toledo Mud Hens 2B
7-18, .389 AVG, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 SB, 5:5 BB:K

Eric Patterson makes the Top 5 this week….that is all.

7-19, .368 AVG, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 2:0 BB:K
Now that Justin Henry is getting more ABs, he is finding himself on the Hot Sheet a lot.

7.
8-22, .364 AVG, 6 R, 4 SB, 3:5 BB:K

Quintin Berry has been a solid addition to the Toledo Mud Hens this year. He provides some nice depth for the Tigers.

8.
Tyler Collins – Lakeland Flying Tigers OF
8-24, .333 AVG, 4 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 6:3 BB:K

It has been awhile since Tyler has been on the Hot Sheet. But he is still having a great season in Lakeland. Having Castellanos and Collins batting together in the lineup has been a great recipe for the Flying Tigers.

9.
Patrick Leyland – West Michigan Whitecaps C
6-18, .333 AVG, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 0:4 BB:K

Smokes Jr. making the Hot Sheet!

10.
Jordan Lennerton – Erie Seawolves 1B/DH
8-26, .308 AVG, 4 R, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 1:10 BB:K

Jordan has to cut down on the K’s and then he’ll see himself climb up the Hot Sheet.

HONORABLE MENTION

Hopefully just a couple of games, but as you can imagine this is more significant likely for a catcher than any other position:

The injury might not be severe enough to warrant the DL, but that remains to be seen.

"It's a good point," Leyland said about how long the Tigers can afford to go with one catcher, "but right now, it's a case of putting the cart before the horse."

From 77-0 to 11-5: The Tigers and the Early Bullpen Struggles

The Tigers have lost 5 games in 2012 so far in which they were leading late. Their collective bullpen ERA is 4.25, good for 23rd in MLB.

What is the problem? Is it fluky? Can we pin most of it on Valverde? (2 blown saves, 1.8 WHIP, 5.7 BB/9) Do the Tigers need another arm? Will this even out?

My thoughts are as follows: Dotel, Coke and Benoit will all be good. Below's been great but I don't completely trust him yet. Valverde though, we'll see. He's got no control and it seems like he's throwing 95% fastballs, although fangraphs disagrees (79/21)

I could mention some more stats or whatever but JV has pitched 12.2 innings and BABIP isn't really meaningful right now. So what do you guys think? Is this a real problem?
