Just saw this story on MLive:

Tim Skubick: Michigan senator wants Detroit Lions to play Green Bay Packers in the Upper Pennisula | MLive.com...

Just saw this story on MLive:

Tim Skubick: Michigan senator wants Detroit Lions to play Green Bay Packers in the Upper Pennisula | MLive.com

Quote:

This is Pure Michigan and somebody ought to run with Sen. Tom Casperson’s idea: A football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions staged in the Upper Peninsula.

You see, Mr. Casperson hails from up there. While he’s debunking the current chatter about the Uppers bailing out on the trolls below the bridge and going it alone, he'd like to see the rest of the state do something in his neck of the woods.
....

Honestly, I find this a very intriguing idea. There are two MAJOR road blocks that I see:
First, money. It always comes down to money. I don't think there is a stadium in the UP that is close to big enough to host an NFL game.

Second, fandom. I think you'd end up with more Packers fans there than Lions fans. It might be a bit embarrassing for a team to play in it's home state, but playing an 'away' game.

Still... it could be fun to do. I wonder if they could get a Green Bay/Detroit game schedule in the pre-season? I think the NFL tries to avoid playing divisional opponents in the pre-season, but perhaps they would make an exception if both teams asked for it? They could make it the 4th game where the starters are only in for one drive so that the opposing team doesn't get too much insight into the other side.

For any yoopers... what football stadiums do you have there? I know MTU has one, but it's quite small in terms of stands... I think it seats just 3K. And there's the Superior Dome... slightly larger, but still only 8K. Anything else?

2012 NFL Draft Tracker

As many places do, the NFL page lists team needs. For some off reason, though, they have WR listed as a need. I can't disagree more with that. Other than QB, I can't think of a position that the Lions are more set at. CJ, arguable the best WR in the league. Bureleson, who's definitely aging, but still a decent receiver. And Young, and up and comer who showed great promise as a rookie last year.

A pro-bowl 1st
An aging, but solid 2nd
A very promising new comer at 3rd

Where's the need? To be fair we may not have a number 4 guy locked up, but I can hardly say that getting a number 4 if more important than upgrading the o-line or even the d-line. And if the Lions really get desperate for a 4th receiver, I know a guy who supposed to be a really good athlete who's good at snagging balls and is looking for work right now. He's already got a house in Detroit too!

Allen Park —Lions running back Mikel Leshoure allegedly tried to eat a stash of marijuana after a Baroda Lake Township police officer stopped the car he was in for a traffic violation, according a police report.

Leshoure was scheduled for arraignment in Berrien County Court Monday on marijuana possession charges — his second marijuana offense in less than two months, Baroda Lake Township Police Chief Gary Ruhl said.

"Apparently, he has a bad time driving in Berrien County," Ruhl said, citing a Feb. 18 case in which Leshoure pleaded guilty to using marijuana after a Benton Township police officer caught him with the drug during a traffic stop.

In the most recent alleged offense, at 12:54 p.m. on March 12, a Baroda Lake Township stopped a 2012 Mitsubishi with Texas license plates on eastbound Interstate 94 for failing to signal during a lane change and following too close to a vehicle in front of it, according to a Baroda Lake Township police report.

The driver, Donald Stewart of Champaign, Ill. didn't have a driver's license, the report said. Laeshoure told the police he had rented the car, according to the report.

"While speaking with the passenger, (the officer) observed that he was chewing marijuana," the report said. (The officer) also observed small pieces of marijuana down the front of his shirt. Mr. Leshoure was ordered to spit out the marijuana, which he did."

Loose marijuana and a "partially burned blunt" were confiscated from the car.

Stewart and Leshoure were each ticketed for possession of marijuana. Stewart was also cited for driving without a license. Both men were dropped off at a nearby McDonald's restaurant, and the car, which was rented from Hertz, according to the report, was towed.

Ruhl said because Leshoure had a previous marijuana offense, the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office charged the running back with possession of marijuana. "That's a two-year felony," Ruhl said.

Leshoure, who missed his entire rookie season after having Achilles tendon surgery, was ordered to appear in court Monday, but there was no set time scheduled, Ruhl said. "It's a walk-in arraignment," he said.

In the Feb. 18 case, Leshoure was originally cited for marijuana possession, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of use of marijuana.

"He was fined $485, which he paid on the spot," Ruhl said. "Then, less than three weeks later, my guy gets him."

The deal given to the football player for his first offense is standard procedure, Ruhl said.

"We get so many of those use cases, if we took everyone to jail for possession, the jail wouldn't have room for the people who need to be there, so when it's a small amount under an ounce, they're usually allowed to plead it down to the lesser charge," he said.

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said team officials are aware of Leshoure's arrest and pending court hearing.

"We are gathering more information and have no further comment at this time," Keenist said.
