GOODBYE DAD
I mentioned this in the Adopt-A-Tiger Draft thread, but I felt a tribute was in order for the man who introduced me to Tigers' Baseball. My dad lost his battle with cancer on Sunday morning. As a kid, we would spend summer nights together playing catch & listening to games on the radio. That gave me a love for the Tigers, and for radio - which I've made my profession for half my life. Thank you dad. Say hi to Ernie & Sparky for me.

Thanks for sharing this sad news. I know it wasn't probably very easy. I too remember Sunday afternoons with my dad, watching the Tigers on TV, even drinking a little bit of Strohs out of a small juice cup with him like I was a grownup too; the surprise trips to Detroit for a game; things that gave a texture to my life it would not otherwise had.
Pass on the love of friendship, family and the team to someone else, dj. It's just one more way to honor him. Peace be with you, brother."If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster."--Clint Eastwood

Sorry to hear about your father's passing, Dennis. Your note about playing catch with the radio on in the background is a nice tribute to him.

Sorry to hear that and I know little I can say will make you feel any better, but I think you will take solace one day in the fact you had a great relationship with your father.
And I can say, as a father, that if my sons remember their childhood and my involvement in it in a similarly positive way, well, I'd guess I'd feel as though I did something right and I'd feel good about my life in a way few other things could come close to touching.

A very nice tribute to your dad. I lost my dad back in 1982 and I've missed him every day since.
He introduced me to baseball and we played catch, he threw me grounder s and fly balls. Actually, he named me after his favorite ball player, Bob Feller.
May God be with you and your family in this sad time.

We may not all 'know' each other here but we share a common interest that brought us to the forum - baseball. For me it was my dad who introduced me to the game, the Tigers and the sound of Ernie on a summer day. Perhaps it was while playing catch, coming home from practice, a family picnic or even cutting the grass - regardless the game, the sharing was/is there.
My condolences to you and yours.Scully:

I send my deepest condolences. I share a love of the Tigers and many nights in the past (as far back as 1966) listening to the Tigers on WJR with my dad, who turns 84 on May 2. We talk many times a week about the latest in Tiger News (he's never wanted to learn to use a computer), and since I have the Extra Innings package on DirecTV (all he gets are Cleveland games, and I have to watch them on the same Cleveland channel he gets to see them on, STO), I keep him abreast of every game.
So it is with this common thread I feel your pain deeply and keenly. I'm so sorry for your loss.2013 Adopt A Tiger: Devon Travis

I wish Dad and I had shared more than business and family. We really did not have many common interests. Recently as I go through the boxes of item of his I have had now for a couple of years, I am putting a lot of his history together I only slightly knew. I'm taking apart his WWII photo albums and scanning them to share with families of those he served with and had a lot of response. We were never as close in adult life as when I was a child and I always regretted that. I am now learning and appreciating what may have driven us apart and how alike we actually were. Normally leaders in our field and normally in charge. Together we would be at odds. This thread brings the hurt home when I lost Dad with so many questions remaining to be asked.
But this is about DJ and I want you to know we care for many reasons.Live your life for what it can be and not for what it was.

Thanks Huey, but it's not about me. There are dozens of questions I wished I'd asked years ago and now will never have answered. I'd imagine my story is like a lot of folks - dad introduces us to baseball & a lifetime love is born. It's not just the game .. it's the connection with our father. I would love for this thread to be something where people feel like they can come & share their thoughts about their dads - living or passed on.
