2013 Spring Training, the early days

Well I know Verlander is here most days for a little over an hour. He has thrown a little and I'm not sure who the catcher is. I'm told he is rehabbing and I am drawing a blank who was injured late. I'll try and be out there next week when mini camp gets underway.

I recall Avila with a wrist injury in the series, but I was told this catcher has a leg injury.

Not sure if it's him, but Bryan Holaday has been working out at Tigertown since before the new year.

Today consisted of V-Mart running and hitting in the cages with a trainer (Javier). No other players.

Most, unless they have a local place to stay, which quite a few do.

I've only ever heard of a couple non roster invites and coaches staying at a hotel. The majority of the major leaguers either have or rent homes/condos in the area. The younger guys will often group up with 4-5 others to share a home. Same with the minor league guys, they either rent an apt./home with others or stay in the dorms.

Yesterday consisted of Verlander, V-Mart, Bryan Pena, Bryan Holliday, Bruce Rondon as well as some other minor leaguers including Jacob Thompson. Jhonny Peralta was also in camp, though I do not believe he did any sort of work out.

It's great to see the guys slowly trickling in.

If it was not for this map last year I would have had no idea there were that many fields there. We always park in a retirement home parking lot (5.00) and approach from the South West. I always just focus on Joker Marchant and have never really looked around.

I was at JMS this morning for a couple of hours. Did not see any current Tigers and no activity on the stadium field. The Gift Shop is open for the next two weeks not counting this Saturday, which is PigFest. If you thought ST had fencing, you will not believe the miles of 8' chain link out there now. I know some of it will come down after PigFest, but imagine a lot will remain. Infield warning track is still dirt. Painting crews everywhere. the old concrete taxiway has been covered in asphalt as well as the gravel access to the back fields. That ought to raise the temperature 10 degrees. All the old trees for the back fields are gone sadly. The only tigers I observed on the back fields other than Ike Blessett are here:

I think they were only fenced off while the Tigers had a home game? I was out there last year and it was open when the Tigers had an away game. Of course, I never went back there when the Tigers were playing, I was watching the game.

I'll be in touch with Mgmt about field access again shortly. There are ways around security, but I won't go there. You will have to pay the parking fee on game days.

On Verlander, he was tied for 18th yesterday. I just saw him sink a birdie about 15 minutes ago. Haven't checked today's scoring.

Don't understand the scoring but as CBS closed their telecast, they mentioned Verlander made the cut.

Today camp officially opened with workouts. I haven't gone through these yet so will only highlight a few and let you decide who is who. The last photos were taken with an incorrect setting I didn't notice until I was putting the camera away so are overexposed.

A little before 10 AM, the staff led the players out of the clubhouse......
