Default Justin Verlander Misses Out On 2012 Cy Young Award

Closest ever vote that did not end in a tie. David Price wins it by a measly four total points, and beats JV in first place votes 14-13.

JV should have won. Voters screwed this one up.

Wow, that's a close vote. I thought Price would win it. Verlander deserved it, but not by a lot so I'm not going to get upset about this. Cabrera is set to win an award I don't think he really deserves, so it all evens out.

JV should have won. Oh well; I don't really care what sportswriters think.

Former Detroit Free Press writer Jon Paul Morosi (now with Fox Sports) voted Price first, Verlander second. That's a six point difference. There's your difference. To be honest, I think Price deserved it. To do what he did in the AL East with the consistency that he did is nothing short of incredible. It wasn't something I'd be losing sleep over regardless.

Also, only two voters had Weaver over Verlander, both from the LA chapter (ranked Weaver second and JV third). With a 7-4-3-2-1 scoring system, that's not enough to make up the difference, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Price made 16 starts against the AL east(3 of which came against Boston in September when they were throwing out AAA teams and the Yankees when the were the walking dead), Verlander made 11, but his came earlier in the season when Boston was a much better team and Verlander also faced a tougher interleague schedule having to go up against Cincinatti(with a healthy Votto) and STL, arguably the two best hitting teams in the NL. So overall I think Price faced a slightly tougher schedule but not enough to make up for pitching in a friendly pitcher's environment, having a much better defense and pitching 4 games worth of innings less.

    Dave Cameron on Fangraphs tonight:

Quite simply, there’s just not much of a case for anyone besides Justin Verlander. This isn’t to take anything away from David Price, who had an excellent season, but unless you’re still evaluating a pitcher by wins and losses, there’s really nothing you can point to that puts Price ahead of Verlander.

    Exactly.

Very possibly this came down to the Rays having a much better PR staff than the Tigers.

Price's average opponents OPS against was .763, where as Verlander's was only .758, so using OPS on average he did face a ever so slightly batter, but Verlander on average pitched in a tougher park, Price's park factor was 97 where as Verlander's was 102. This voting reeks of lazily looking at Price pitching in the AL East and Verlander in the Central and not actually breaking down their opponents. Boston was not the same team in the 2nd half as they were the first, same with the Yankees, and Toronto was a mess all season injury wise. Those AL East lineups weren't all that scary in the 2nd half which is when Price faced them alot more than Verlander did.

I'm ticked that it was so close because back to back Cy Young has a nice ring to it and would have looked great on JV's HOF plaque.

So the Tigers will start 2013 with the last two Cy Young winners as their 1-2 in their rotation. They're getting David Price.

Price had a great season, no doubt. But Verlander was better.

Clearly Verlander's next no hitter should be next season against Los Angeles with Weaver starting for the halos.

this close result in this vote had me thinking the MVP would have been closer too, seems the voters are slower to come around on hitters numbers than they are pitchers based on this close vote and the King Felix win a couple seasons ago
Put me on record. Prince Fielder will still OPS 850+ in years 7-8-9 of this contract. (sucks that my signature has to stay this for 7 years now)

It should come as no surprise that a Tiger gets screwed out of an award he deserves. Aside from winning 25 games last year (hard not to notice that) or winning the triple crown this year (again, really hard not to notice that), Detroit draws the short stick whenever there is a close contest for a major award. Our players can't even get gold gloves they deserve (Jackson). Hunter better be happy with his 9 gold gloves, because he's in Detroit now. He won't get another.
