Porcello could draw a nice little trade package...
Anibel I'm not trying to be too optimistic about, because Yankees or anyone unexpected could come out knowing they could offer $80/5 and probably take him. He wants a ring, but doesn't necessarily have to be with Detroit. I'd give Sanchez, within reason, what he wants... you'd have him through his prime of 28-33.I like a man who grins when he fights--- Sir Winston Churchill.

Sweet. Wouldn't be surprised if Scherzer is traded for a nice SS now. (Andrus)

I like the Sanchez signing too, makes the trade last year more validated than ever that he wasn't just a rental.

True, I actually don't mind trading Scherzer if we could get a guy like Elvis. Opens up more money for the big guys coming up for resigning and Porcello is a good innings eater.

If Scherzer nets Andrus, you've gotta do that.

No way you trade Scherzer. Tigers are going for the World Series next year. You don't trade your second best starting pitcher when you're going for it.
Porcello? Sure. Scherzer? No way.the above opinion is not respected by Deleterious

The Rangers would not trade Andrus for Upton, they're not going to trade him for Scherzer or - good lord - Porcello.

I think trading Porcello now would be stupid. His stock is pretty low right now.
He could easily win 15-16 games next year (for example) with a little luck, and then we could get a much nicer haul for him if we were still inclined to trade him. At the very least, hold onto him until mid-season and see if anyone overpays out of desperation.2013 AAT: Darin Downs

6/$80M is a lot, but it's still more than $8M less a year than Grienke got. And Grienke's better, but not THAT much better.
EDIT: Sorry... that's a typo. I meant 5/$80M.Last edited by LineCrosser; 12-14-2012 at 10:21 AM.

I went into a Batman begins Bruce Wayne exile following 2010 and the Eddie Bonine release. (though I still checked in by lurking). But, two playoff appearances, a World Series trip for the team and KL2 -- though I wish I could have seen a run or at least a friggin extra base hit -- have brought me back to save Gotham.

Why Porcello likely will be dealt: Tigers won't warehouse a starter in the minors. Smyly is a LHer ready to go and has an edge on Porcello.

Will be interesting to see where the Tigers trade Porcello. Lots of interest from NL teams, but also heard Rangers as a possiblity.Adopt-A-Lion: Calvin Johnson - Broke Jerry Rice's single season receiving record

Why in the world wouldn't they warehouse a starter in the minors? That's exactly what they should do unless bowled over by a trade offer. This is wonderful rotation depth/insurance.

The other consideration is that trade chips are often worth more in deadline deals, plus you get insurance against a spring training/early season injury (which seem to be common with pitchers). You would want to make a move now *if* you thought that the need you were going to fill, shortstop in our case, was going to stop you from leading your division, but if this team can't stay ahead of KC and the Palehose with this pitching staff and Peralta at SS, something will have gone terribly wrong.

Lets just be silly and play a little game...
Lets pretend we trade Porcello and Fister gets hurt. Who becomes the 5th starter and are you comfortable with that for longer than 45 days?
Depth is good.
I hope they don't trade Porcello until mid-season, if at all. But I know I'm in the minority and I'm ok with that.Every time you play a hand of you poker you wanna run through a mental check list. Head Position Hand Position Neck Position Breathing Posture. More than 25 items. It's a lot. And that why I've come up with a handy mnemonic device. Just one word: HPHPNPBPECMSPAMDCPAFTSTTL. It's easy.

This is a legitimate consideration so you'd rather hold Smyly at Toledo, and if Porcello doesn't look any better starting '13 that would be a waste. But along those lines, I think the Tigers will also have what Jeff Jones reports to the Tigers on Porcello's off season in the decision mix. For instance, if Porcello is finally showing evidence that he is working toward having 9 inning stamina, you might want to get a chance to showcase that lest you end up selling low. Basically I'm saying that if the internal winter reports make them think RP might give Smyly some competition for the last spot, waiting till the season has started to mave a move wouldn't be that big a waste. And I suppose the converse is also true: If they move Porcello now he probably isn't doing anything in the off-season to change anyone's mind.
