A schedule really needs to be looked at in many manners. Last week, the WSox played the Angels, a good team. But the Angels were just coming off of a tough 4 game series against Texas. So many times, it's not who you play, but when you play them. As well as the pitching match-ups. I'm sure Chicago fans don't feel real confident with their SP. And if they are confident with the guys they have, they're stupid.

Speaking of team schedules FWIW I looked and throughout the course of the year we play NYY,TAM, TEX, LAA(The teams who I consider the best teams in the AL besides us) 37 times, where as the White Sox only play them 30 times. Plus we made an extra trip to Fenway and we had to play a series against arguably the NL's best Reds where as the White Sox didn't, instead they got a series with the lowly Astros. So all in all I would imagine when the year is done we will have played the tougher schedule.

The premise of the article isn't bad. The difference between a hard schedule and an easy schedule could be worth a game in the standings.
But this article was poorly written. Tons of Lynn-speak, too.Trade Ajax

I don't understand the 'scary' part? This is baseball, not boxing or hockey or football where they'll just go wild and start beating people up.

Exactly. I was interested to read the article, so I could gain a little insight. I got about half-way through before I realized it was just a bunch of hooey, going back and forth without taking a position.
Plus.
I hate.

Then I realized it was Lynn Henning, and I stopped reading the rest.

What is the 'Nothing to lose' mentality in Baseball? Aren't you trying to win the whole season? The only extra spark I can see would teams want to end the year winning, but that would be every team.

I'm sure the Royals and Twins will want to win a lot more in September than the Angels, Indians, and Rays...
The Tigers are screwed.

If the Tigers end up taking one of the wild card spots, it would be Porcello's turn to pitch the one game playoff, assuming the rotation remains intact.

Leyland has addressed this in the past. teams that are way out of it bring up and play many minor leaguers. And they do crazy things like steal in non-steal situations, don't bunt when everyone is expecting it and other things that are unexpected. They have nothing to lose by taking risky chances. And it's hard to get "up" by playing these teams, not like when you play N.Y. or another contender.
The Twins have been playing decent lately. K.C. is still pretty bad, but they can hit. You just never know what will happen when you play these 2nd tier teams.
Still, I would rather play them then some other teams. Of course, if we're still behind Chicago, I would rather play them instead of hoping some other team beats them for us.2013 AAT: Brennan Smith
