Sorry to see Kelly get the boot ahead of Raburn who has been such a bust this season.

me too, but you can only have so many lefty OFs. PLus its not like Kelly has been good. I wonder if we should have given Eldred a better shot. Not sure Delmon could OPS 1000 in AAA

Hopefully Dirks is now the fulltime LF/DH with Berry and Young spitting the other time.

True about Kelly buy he was pretty much around as a late inning defensive replacement and he did that okay. Raburn hasn't filled his expected role.

Who cares about expected role? Raburn has more value to this team that Kelly.

we haven't seen the last of Don Kelly

A couple of my lasting good memories of Don Kelly

    1. His rounding 3rd on Inge's double in game 163...
    2. HRs against the Yankees in the playoffs

Raburn does have more value than Kelly, but the more important story is that Young has lost his starting job for now. Young should actually be a good platoon player since he hits lefties well. I believe we'll see Young and Raburn getting starts against LHP. The question is which of Berry, Boesch and Dirks will play versus lefties? I imagine it will be some kind of rotation.

I will never forget that as well. My whole family (wife, daughter, son and myself) were jumping up and down during that moment yelling "GO DON GO!!!". Now, when ever he gets put in the game or hes at bat, its " Go Don Go!"

My kids will be bummed, they were a fan of his. I will have to explain this gently.

The Tigers are a better team with Dirks. No matter if it's Raburn or Kelly that gets released. We're talking the lower end of the bench players there. An OF of Dirks, Jackson and Berry is pretty good. Let Young and Boesch platoon at DH. Too many LH hitters, but I guess it's better than too many RH hitters.

What Leyland needs to do won't get done. He's too set in his ways and he's way too stubborn. He needs to bat Berry leadoff and put Jackson in the 5 hole. When a player is going good, Leyland likes to leave him in that spot. I understand that. But we need production from the #5 thru #9 spots too. But, it will never happen with Leyland filling out the line-up.

Dirks is the only one of three Lefties that has hit LHP. AFAIAC Dirks should just start unless he plays himself out of a starting role. As of when he went down he was head and shoulders above Delmon and Boesch against both lefties and righties. He and Berry are about equal against righties. So I'd play Dirks and Berry against righties, Dirks and Delmon/Raburn against lefties. Unfortunately, it's not unlikely JL will continue to play both Raburn and Delmon against LHP, and Raburn is a waste of space against anyone this season. July saw his OPS drop another 15 pts. There is no 2nd half recovery in site.

EDIT: and I don't feel bad for Kelly. A career minor league player without the talent to be there got three nice years in the show to tell his grandkids about. Plus the nice pension bump.

I'm not sure Delmon has lost his starting job. I believe he was on New York yesterday for court. His absence from the lineup today may be a result of that.

I believe (or maybe it's hope) he has lost it. It doesn't make sense for him to start against RHP. Who are they going to sit? Dirks? Boesch? Berry? I think they'll all start in the short-term until one of them fails miserably. Young might start against some RHP, but it looks to me like his playing time is going to be cut by a lot.

If he's not in the lineup tomorrow then I'll believe it. For now I'm working off the assumption that he got an extra day off to deal with his legal troubles.
