Mitch Albom's "Ernie" play
I went to see the Ernie play today with a couple friends and it is absolutely fantastic. The guy who played Ernie(Will David Young) really brought Ernie to life. I have never heard anyone even try to impersonate Ernie, but he did a fairly good job on the voice. There were certain phrases where he tonally really nailed Ernie's voice and it was almost like seeing and hearing the real Ernie. If you haven't seen this yet, do go see it if you get the chance. It's at the City Theatre.

Here's a thread from last year. We plan to see it again this summer.

I saw it last summer and I enjoyed it. I thought the actor who played Ernie did a really good job.

I want to see it, and I'm pretty sure I'd love it, but I can't get over the feeling that Mitch Albom is such a pompous ***....oh well, he is a talented writer, at least when he's not writing directly about sports.

The crossing of the picket line kind of rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Then getting caught lying about being at a sporting event, then blaming the players for not showing up like they said they were going to. Not to mention, nearly every article is a self promotion of some sort. Aw, it's the second anniversary of Ernie's death. Why not remember him by going to see the play I wrote. Aw, this poor woman who's daughter is missing and just so coincidentally a charity I founded helped to save her house. I guess it's great that he does do charity work, but it sort of loses the effect when you have to toot your own horn so much.
That said, as mentioned in the previous thread from last year, I don't think Ernie was as modest and as "aw shucks" as he liked people to believe.

While I was watching the play, not once did it occur to me that Mitch Albom wrote it.

I don't support what that pompous blowhard does. And saber is wrong. He is a terrible, lazy writer.

I just think all the Albom hate is ridiculous. Very few people commented on the actual play. I was looking for comments on the play, but the Albom haters hijacked the thread and turned it into an Albom thread and not an Ernie thread. The asking about the Albom hate was a secondary topic I felt the need to respond to, since I didn't expect that to come up. I was caught off guard by the hate of Albom.

Who do people hate more? Mitch Albom or Brandon Inge?

Maybe, maybe not, but I don't so the planning of the wake being any evidence of Ernie being a self-promoter. The Tigers probably told them they'd like to pay tribute in some fashion when he died, and Ernie suggested that or made a choice from a few suggestions. It was probably as much about preventing a mob scene at his funeral or his family being deluged with phone calls. If he was about self-promotion, he could have been the subject of a MUCH bigger salute at a September game before his death.
