Doesn't his 1925 season disqualify him as "obscure"? I doubt he was considered obscure back then. I suppose the fact that he had one great season and not may people know about him makes him an interesting choice though.
By the way, I didn't know much about him either until last year when I was doing something on the best outfields ever. The '25 outfield of Heilmann, Cobb and Wingo made the list.Lee Panas

No one knows him today and he has a funny name. That's why I put him on. To me, for most people around here, Firpo Marberry is obscure. I guess we have different definitions. Billy Rogell isn't obscure. A lot of people know him. I bet we can test 100 fans at Comerica Park and maybe 1-2 might have heard of Firpo Marberry even though he was on some of those great 1930s teams.
I think you could argue Jerry Udjur isn't that obscure. He was pretty much a starting pitcher for a full season, and reasonably effective as well. But he has the "name." I think that makes it cool.
But I will change gears and go a bit more obscure from the same era.

What year was that? 1982 or something like that? I guess I can check it out (and probably will). But I remember them talking about how the brothers were going to face each other, and to my young mind it sounded so cool. And then it ended up being just a dandy of a game.
I'm almost positive it was 1-0 and Pat went the distance with Tom going eight innings. It could've been 2-1 with the innings pitched flip-flopped. I'm going to look for the game.
Actually, Pat Underwood probably doesn't nicely fit in the obscure category either."Only Lions fans can predict a victory when their starting quarterback has a broken arm." -unknown

Wow, was I off. The game was in 1979.
1-0, Pat Underwood went 8 1/3 innings. Sue me, I was 10.

The Tiger HOF people should be able to rattle off 10 without any troubles - one for each decade in the 1900s. And maybe even name a Detroit Star or two.
