Hanley is a horrible fit. Moving Peralta for Reyes was risky but made plenty of sense, but Peralta is a much better defender at SS. If you moved Peralta, you'd just have him pissed off and the defense would drop quite a bit. If you moved Hanley to third, he'd be pissed the whole time. No thanks.

I was beating the Beltran drum earlier in the thread. If I'm the Tigers, he's the very strong plan B to Cespedes.

I don't want Hanley. Why would things be any better with him over here? We're not in a position where the risk of him ruining the clubhouse chemistry is worth it.

I'm having second thoughts about Gio. His WHIP isn't all that impressive, and I think pitching in Oakland has really helped his ERA. Having Gio for 4 years < having Turner for 6. Gio's a good #3 guy outside of a pitcher's park, maybe a #2, but Turner is projected to be a #1 and he's pretty close to being ready. The fact that the Athletics want a Haren-type deal is even more reason to be scared off.

I think Wandy is a better fit if we have to give up Turner for Gio...as long as the Astros come down from their silly request of not eating any of that contract, I'd go after him.

Turner seems to project as more of a number 2, from what I've read. If it was Turner and a lesser prospect or two for Gio, I can see the wisdom in making the deal. But we don't really need Gio, so sending Turner + Nick C and others for him doesn't make much sense.

I haven't seen anything anywhere that suggests the Tigers are interested in him, though.

I just assumed there was something about him that made it obvious that he wouldn't be a good fit and I just wasn't awae of it.

<begin rant>I am not one bit "comfortable" about making small tweaks to this team. No one expected the Tigers to win 95 games. No one. They played over their heads after a tepid start and a lot of guys who did great last season may well regress in '12. How can Verlander really repeat a season like last year? Him coming down to earth just a bit could set this team back a lot. Win 18 instead of 24 and you have 89 wins. Avila, Peralta, Papa Grande? VMart is getting older by the minute. Win five fewer still and you have 84 wins. Aaargh! I am the biggest homer around and I celebrate this team, but I can't imagine being "comfortable" with tweaks. DD had better be playing his cards close and blowing hot air on this. Even if they get Cespedes he probably will not be ready out the gate to compete at this level and make a significant impact this year. "Comfortable?" Bah! <end rant>
I agree. Until the big winning streak at the end, we were looking at 84 wins. Stand pat here and we could end 2012 looking up at the Royals. This team is within a game or two of .500 either way as is, imo.

I'd be very happy with the Dotel signing if it gets done. In the playoffs this year, our clear weakness was middle relief. If you talk about building a team that can win in the playoffs and not just winning during the regular season, you should be talking about Dotel. 7th inning guys matter in the post season, but 5th starters not so much.

count me in on signing Dotel. depending on price and all that. can't argue with his numbers, and being 38 and all, i imagine there's not going to be a ridiculous bidding war to get him.

It bothers me. I thought last year was going to be his breakout year but he still gives up way too many walks to be considered a front end starter. Not worth trading for him given the cost.

Dotal would be a very nice addition to what we already have in the bull pen.

As for Buehrle I wouldn't have touched him for anything close to that price. The Marlins know that they will never be paying him the full contract anyways. If he has a no trade clause then it will be harder but he won't want to stick around if every other good player is being traded so he'll waive it. If they didn't include a no trade clause then what I said above is null. Just seems like the Marlins are bidding against themselves on some of these guys out there.
