Well, this sucks. There goes one of two reliable arms out of the pen. (Valverde the other; maybe Benoit can be thrown in there as well) And maybe he shouldn't have been forced to throw 42 pitches last night in 1-1/3 innings...

I guess we just have to hope Oliveros steps in and performs well...

John Niyo tweeted to Morosi referencing the 42 pitches on Wed. night.

    This makes me ill.

Wasn't there a game last year against Boston that our closer had one of these marathon sessions and it didn't go well? I am at a lost as to why one pitcher can throw 42 pitches that's the premier bullpen standout, but Don Kelly can 'save' Purcey.

Before we start wanking about Leyland bringing him into that game, Al did mention having elbow soreness before the 42 pitch performance.

Leyland can do what he wants, but as a nobody fan I wouldn't personally have my right handed specialist with the highest k/w rate in the AL throw 42 pitches. That's just me.

    lol

Mlive had a story to the same tune (Alburquerque's elbow hurts everytime he throws a slider) a couple of weeks ago.

Hard slider is an evil pitch - for the hitter and the pitcher.

so if Al is done, and let's face it if his elbow is toast and he's tore it up throwing his slider, can we look at his case and Zumaya's case and think maybe there's something wrong with the training staff here (besides obesity)

Almost one year ago to the day Zumya went on the DL with the Tigers in first place. The domino effect began the next day and the rest is known history at this point. Al is special....a couple of Mud Hen players told me last week that his slider is the most wicked they've seen from anyone !!!! ---------- I believe it, I've been admiring it a lot of nights in recent weeks. But, not for a while now, all the BEST Al, you're special and very important to this team ! -- Get well soon !

Elbow inflammation? Are you kidding? Name one power pitcher that comes back from that in the same season. Chances are pretty good here he's cooked for the year.

    Unhappy

I fully expected this to happen, but I believed (hoped?) that it would happen next season or beyond. This is unfortunate.
