Hopefully Magglio is doing some deep thinking about his future and realizing that if he cannot hit minor league pitching then he will not do well in the Bigs at this time. Maybe he will decide to retire for the good of his own reputation?

Whatever happens, he has been an important and satifactory part of the Tigers legacy. Maybe since he has to be paid anyway, he will be offered the job of assistant hitting coach (too much to hope that Lloyd gets fired). His hitting expertise could go a long way with all the young guys on the roster. Does anyone know if he has been a 'team' player or more interested in his own reputation?

Magglio taking a few more days in Toledo
Just got back from the Mud Hens clubhouse at Fifth Third Field, and the plan has changed on Magglio Ordonez in his rehab stint. He said he told Hens manager Phil Nevin that he plans to continue his rehab assignment here at least through Saturday, possibly Sunday, and target a Monday return to the Tigers.

The news was first reported by John Wagner of the Toledo Blade, who talked with Nevin and checked it with Magglio. Ordonez confirmed the news a few minutes later.

Ordonez said he’ll play right field here all nine innings tonight, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. From there, he’ll either take Sunday off or play in Toledo.

“Monday, I’ll be in Detroit,” Ordonez said.

It isn’t a health setback that pushed him back, he said.Rather, it was a timing issue.

“To see more pitches, get more at-bats,” Ordonez said. “If you see, I don’t even have 100 at-bats in the big leagues. I need to get more at-bats.”

Technically, he’s right. He had 99 at-bats before right ankle weakness forced him to the disabled list.

“I need to play to get my body in baseball shape, play the outfield and run,” Ordonez said.

The ankle, Ordonez said again, is fine.

Thanks for posting this. Maggs looks like he's still swatting at the ball and not generating needed power off his back leg. Almost as if it would be an accident if he pulled the ball.

Indeed. He's simply sticking the bat in front of the plate. Any power is being generated by the pitch. It doesn't look good at all.

With Maggs being on a Rehab assignment, are there rules that will force the team to reinstate him soon?

Wow, he doesn't look close to "ready". Hopefully we can find a way to keep him in Toledo a bit longer..

If he has an option left he can be sent down for more work if it is determined that he needs it, and he accepts it.

I have no idea how close to being ready he is, and I am not going to pretend that I do based on crappy footage of three ABs.

It was a risk signing him in the offseason given his age and recent injuries. At some point Maggs' performance will decline (and probably severely) - it happens to every ballplayer eventually. I hope he's at least serviceable when they have to activate him, and by serviceable I mean a .700+ OPS and not the sub .500 OPS he posted so far this year.

That's why the MILB Multimedia sevice is such a good value, you can watch every ab, in Magg's case, they have not been pretty.

So no stride/planting off the ankle? Or is it a timing issue? Both?

It was a risk, but a calculated one that I thought they got right at the time.

OK - I did watch every ab last night and we must of been watching different games. Yes, he's not ready to come back, but I didn't see anything alarming. As he said, he just needs a few more games to get his timing back.

I realize that the clips are not high-quality but that's 8 at-bat clips I saw against minor-league pitching and he looked overmatched on every one; every time he made contact it was very weak, even the looper to short-right field for the single.

Not good. Not good at all.

I heard Kaline talking about how Northrup could show up at spring training and hit immediately. He said it took him 2-3 weeks to get his timing back. Here's hoping Magglio is going through the same thing.

Boesch continues to solidify his spot in the lineup.

    Season to date:

    .281/.343/.462/.805

This hot streak has certainly boosted him, lets hope he continues. The tigers have a lethal 3-4-5 when Boesch is going strong.

Leyland has been explicit about Ordonez's return to the Tigers: It will happen only if, in all parties' view, Ordonez is 100 percent...

"There are only nine spots, and I'm gonna put the best guys out there who give us a chance to win," he said, "and I don't care what the names are."
From The Detroit News: Detroit Tigers - MLB | Magglio Ordonez now aiming for Monday return | The Detroit News

It doesn't sound here that Magglio's return to the Tigers' is his decision alone. The message seems to be, "start hitting the cover off the ball there before you get back here."

I don't normally quote myself, but I wanted to add that Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski are not in a postion to lose the chance of winning a division title that is there for the taking because they have an aging, underperforming ballplayer they need to coddle. There is no room for error, here.

When trying to evaluate a batter's swing, I like to be able to see it at least once from an angle perpendicular to the path of the ball. But it looks fine to you, so I guess that's irrelevant.

Great point Bert. Its true, Leyland and Dombroski are both fighting for their jobs. I can see why they both want to stick around for a while longer. We have a top 3 hitter in baseball and a truce ace in Cabby and Verlander who are are both just entering their prime.

I think this is the year we finally win the division.
