Bob Costas to interview Ernie Harwell
Don't know if anyone else has seen the promos for this, but Costas will interview Mr. Harwell for his MLB Network show, Studio 42. The episode premieres Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET.
I doubt we'll get any stories that we haven't already heard a thousand times before, but still and all it's always nice to hear from Ernie. I'll make a point of watching this.

By Tuesday, I'm assuming you mean November 17th. Is that correct?

While I didn't grow up listening to Ernie, I still understand.

Hopefully he doesn't bring a know-nothing, verbose hack on to railroad him with profanity and straw men.

I believe it's already been taped. And I'm sure he will be very respectful to Mr. Harwell. If it weren't for people like Ernie to pave the way, Costas may not even have a job in sports broadcasting.

Costas is just fine. Be thankful it's not Joe Buck... or Jeanne Zelasko because we all know she'd switch from the interview (even if it's taped) to check out what's going on between the Braves and Mets.

Joe Buck:
"Mr. Ernie, it's a pleasure to be interviewing you here in Detroit, a wonderful city that's falllen on hard times but through it all people still find time to enjoy the great taste of Budweiser, the King of Beers. Tell me sir... of all the great ball players you've interviewed in the past, have any of them measured up to Brett Favre?"

Bob Costas interviewed Ernie after the "firing". After Ernie and Paul Carey did their final broadcast together in Baltimore, Ernie went to New York and was on Costas's radio show that night.
Costas had him on for an hour and it was an excellent interview. They talked a lot of Ernie's early life and his major league broadcasting jobs with the Dodgers and Giants and course the long tenure with the Tigers.

When will Bob Costas start aging? He's the new Dick Clark.

For anyone with On Demand and HBO, check out the recent Real Sports segment with Ernie. I stumbled upon it today and it was terrific.
All four segments are very good this time: Ernie, Nick Adenhart, the financial doom of some high school athletics and the guy who holds the world record for holding the most world records.
I think Bryant Gumbel is the new Dick Clark. Actually he seems to be aging in reverse; he looks younger than he did 15 years ago.

I believe my High School was featured in that special... It also appears as if redshark did the special. Or at least somebody with his name.

It was the Columbus area. Grove City was featured, along with another town that I can't remember. Jon Frankel is the correspondent and Joe Perskie is the producer. It was very well done; all of the segments were good. They aired originally on October 27 and are on On Demand now.
HBO: Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel - Stories - Game Over
Game Over
In the sports hotbed of Columbus, Ohio, Friday nights are traditionally all about high-school football and Saturdays are reserved for the Ohio State Buckeyes. But this year, as the Buckeyes play on, Fridays in some areas in and around Columbus have been eerily quiet: no screaming crowds, no high school bands, no cheerleaders and no football. That's because one of the largest school districts in the state recently eliminated all sports and other extracurricular activities due to a lack of funds. As students, parents and others in the community wrestle with the aftermath of this decision, correspondent Jon Frankel talks to those affected and sheds light on a growing nationwide trend of school districts slashing or completely eliminating athletic programs that were an integral part of American public education for generations.
Correspondent: Jon Frankel
Producer: Joe Perskie

Costas had some work done a few years back. Looked real freakish right after.
Now I guess the face is falling back into a more normal looking mode.

I don't get why anyone would have expected Costas not to have been respectful of Harwell. Costas has always been in awe of old-time baseball and its players, manager and broadcasters, almost overdoes it at times. He practically thought the idea of NBC no longer broadcasting a Game of the Week was worthy of a Senate investigation or a national day of mourning.

I don't get the Costas hate. He did a marvelous job with the Ernie interview, as he does with most of his interviews. The Studio 42 segment with the three umpires was great stuff.
He said he doesn't like the tone of some bloggers, which turned a lot of the cyber-types off, I suppose. And he does wax a little too poetic sometimes for my tastes.
But he's among the best baseball interviewers in the business. He asks interesting questions that elicit interesting answers. That's the name of the game.

I agree. Plus, you can tell he loves the game and respects the history of baseball. His questions tend to be too darn long, but other than that, he's a terrific interviewer. He listens to what his subject says.
