Default The Unofficial 2009 Prediction Thread

Unofficial because I don't know if one was already started. I searched and didn't find one.

    First prediction:

Magglio Ordonez wins the batting title with a .351 average.

If you were a player wouldn't you want Miguel Cabrera hitting behind you in the lineup. I thought so.

This has been a decade of firsts (Rays and Rockies) and curse-busting (Red Sox and White Sox) and with that in mind......

Cubs over Angels in the World Series.

    The trade deadline?

Jake Peavy ends up with the Angels
Roy Halliday ends up with the Phillies
Magglio Ordonez ends up with the Cubs (for P Jose Ceda and 3B Josh Vitters)
World Series or Bust. Guess What? Bust........again.

Nate Robertson will be cut by mid May.

Ryan Perry will be the closer by July.

Cabrera bats over .300, and hits 34 home runs.

    Larish takes over at 3B.

Tigers finish in second with 88 wins.

Galarraga shows that 2008 was no fluke.

    Edwin Jackson wins 17 games.

Zach Miner never relinquishes his spot in the starting rotation.

Four starters will end up with 10-14 wins. None with more than 14.

One starer will have more than 15 losses.

The bullpen will have fewer saves than last year (34)

For the third consecutive year, a Tiger will lead the league in a triple crown category (this time it's Cabrera with RBIs; Granderson will also lead the league in runs).

Polanco will improve on last year in all offensive categories.

Guillen and Mags will be on the DL at the same time at some point.

Thames will finish 2nd on the team in HRs for the fourth straight year.

Inge, Laird, and Everitt will live up to defensive expectations and down to offensive expectations.

Wilkin Ramirez will be the talked-about mid-season OF call-up that everyone gets the most excited about.

A strong showing in the end-of-the year homestand will push the Tigers
    .
    .
    .
over .500, giving them an 82-80 finish.

Tigers win 110 (tigersrok bets they won't do it again)

Miggy becomes first triple crown winner since Yaz. Beating out Maggs for the batting title.

JV (my ATT) wins 22 and the Cy Young.

Perry reminds everyone of a right-handed Billy Wagner.

Zumaya loses his right big toe in a freak mulching accident.

Polanco returns sooner than expected from head reduction surgery.

The Tigers erect a wall next to third base for Inge to run through on EVERY play.

Granderson opens an orphanage in center field.

Pitching staff has a 3.00 ERA

Laird fills his glove with bacon bits. (I know, I didn't get that one either)

Leyland has a uniform made from nicotine patches, yet still smokes.

Fu Ti Ni Americanizes his name to Fu Ti Ni-Smith

Turns out Carlos Guillen is related to Ozzie and has been playing "undercover".

Finally, at the deadline, the Royals trade Greinke for Willis. (okay, now I've gone over the top)

Cubs will not only go through another championship drought this year, but they are not going to be a playoff team this season.

I expect the Reds to surprise everyone and win the division. Their time is now.

Tigers struggle to stay near .500, ticket sales are too low, Rodney is having a decent year but at the trade deadline the Tigers trade Ordonez, Verlander and Rodney is cost-cutting moves.

Cabrera challenges for the Triple Crown but loses out on Batting Average (leads the AL in HR's and RBI's...).

Zumaya becomes our closer after the All-Star break, supplanting Rodney.

Hollimon comes up to replace Polanco after PP gets beaned in the noggin' (concussive symptoms for 3 weeks) BEFORE the All-Star break... and never relinquishes 2B. Polanco gets "Pipp'ed".

    JV wins 19 games.

    Edwin Jackson wins 18 games.

Porcello wins Rookie of the Year.

I might think of a few more later...

How can the Cubs go through ANOTHER championship drought when they've been in one for 101 years without a break? Their drought will just continue, which is fine by me!

If St. Louis can keep their starting pitching healthy this season, which has been their major Achilles' heel, they could win the NL Central.

Inge will be out of the lineup by June.

Dontrelle Willis will have 3 quality starts in the month of September, continuing the drama into 2010.

Zach Minor back to the bullpen for no reason by May.

Thames will bat .240 with 28 homeruns.

Leyland will be given an extension in July, we will then flounder somewhat and just miss the playoffs.

    My predictions:

    Verlander will win 20 games

Zumaya will rip the closer's role out of Rodney's grip by June and get injured doing something stupid in August

Robertson will be traded or released well before the deadline

Willis will pitch in meaningful games for the Tigers

Laird will throw out more baserunners than Pudge

Cabrera will hit 40 homeruns and drive in 110

Nate Robertson is the most talked about "snub" at All-Star Game time, with a sub 2.00 ERA as a middle reliever.

Marcus Thames goes on a hot streak in July, & is traded to the Giants for a minor league pitcher.

Curtis Granderson gets MVP consideration by hitting over .320 & having an OBP over .400.

No one reliever dominates, so the closer by committee lasts all season long.

Jeremy Bonderman does not come back `til after Mother's Day, but is then healthy for the rest of the year.

Danny Worth replaces Cale Iorg as the most talked about middle infielder in the system.

Guillen breaks an ankle (hairline fracture - out 6 weeks) trying to chase down a flyball in a game in early May. Leyland inserts Josh Anderson as the regular LF'er and leadoff hitter, whereby he proceeds to get his .340 OBP and 50 steals in 56 attempts at the top spot... scoring 98 runs for the season... Guillen becomes the main DH upon returning, Thames gets traded at the deadline for a Low-A ball flamethrower with piss-poor control...

    MTS goes up in flames...

In an Opening Day game dominated by the two starting pitchers, Verlander outduels Halladay as the Tigers win 3-2. Verlander goes seven shutout innings. Perry gives up only one hit in a 1-2-3 eigth. Toronto's only runs come off Rodney in the ninth. Polanco, who is 5 for 11 in his career against Roy, drives in two of the Tigers runs.

The Tigers win again on Tuesday, but lose on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Thursday, Porcello goes five innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks. He strikes out five, but does not factor in the decision as the bullpen coughs up the win.

    --

Miguel Cabrera will be voted in as the AL's starting first baseman in the All-Star Game. Curtis Granderson finishes fourth among AL outfielders, but gets to start due to an injury to one of the outfielders voted in by the fans. Cabrera and Grandy will be the only Tigers to make the All-Star team.

The returns of Bonderman and Zumaya lead to the departures of Robertson and Rodney. Both will be traded away. For each pitcher, the Tigers will get two lower level minor leaguers. They'll also agree to pick up a big chunk of Nate's contract in order.

Magglio Ordonez will decide that a change is necessary for him to break out of a mid-season slump. The change? A haircut! He homers twice in his first game with the new close-cropped look.

Jim Leyland will also decide to shave his mustache in order to shake the team out of mid-season doldrums. He'll quip that if the players see that he looks different, they'll think he's somebody else, and so maybe they'll decide to listen to this 'new guy'.

Casey Fien will make his MLB debut in June.

Brandon Inge will win a Gold Glove.

September callups include Will Rhymes and Wilkin Ramirez.

Detroit wins game 5 in Wrigley when a Tiger fan (from Toledo) grabs a foul pop fly out of the left fielders glove to preserve a Cabrera at bat and Cabrera homers on the next pitch.

There are 30 MLB teams so each one should win the World Series on average once every 30 years.

It sounds like you and I have a different definition of the word "another".

My definition of another is based on year after year.

At least, you and I agree on something.

I hope the Reds win the division because I want to see Dusty get his due. I thought Dusty got ran out of town for no reason. Lou better deliver, and to me, it's World Series or bust for him. First round loss is just not going to be acceptable anymore, and it shouldn't when you look at the fact Dusty took the Cubs to the NLCs Championship Game while Lou had two great teams that failed in October in the two years that Lou has managed the team.

The Cubs? The Cubs have Soriano signed for the next six years and Milton Bradley signed for the next three. Where are they going to play Magglio? Shortstop?

Dusty had three great starting pitchers in 2003 and blew a 3-1 lead over the Marlins (and blew leads in games 6 and 7 at home). He was outmanaged by Jack McKeon so blatantly it was horrible.

Lou's never had that kind of starting pitching.

I'm not a Pinella apologist, but Dusty was NOT a good manager. He's never been a good manager, he's just been blessed with a lot of great talent. When he didn't have great talent, he's sucked. Ask the Reds.
