Tigers lock up Grandy - ESPN
EDIT:::: info taken from cruzer1 and ESPN::
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3229965
The Detroit Tigers and center fielder Curtis Granderson agreed to a five year, $30.25 million contract, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The Tigers have a club option for the 2013 season.
The contract covers Granderson's arbitration-eligible seasons and buys out one season of free agency.
Last season, the 26-year-old Granderson joined Jimmy Rollins, Willie Mays and Frank "Wildfire" Schulte as the only players in major league history with 20 stolen bases, 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles in a single season.

Great news. If anybody in baseball deserves a couple bucks, its Grandy. Now we just have to lock up Verlander and Cabrera and were set for years to come with a real solid core.

Good news if it is as least 5 seasons. Otherwise, it's not very exciting news. I'm hoping for 6.

This is great. One of my worst fears was NY or some other large market team putting up enough money to pull Grandy away from DET.
I love the new attitude in the front office to pay for talent. Let's keep it going DD and Illitch.

yep, good point. THey've got him for the next 4 years anyway so the only positive thing with a 4 year deal is if he goes monster ARod/Cabrera crazy, otherwise it just saves some arbitration headaches.

I'd like to see the contract. But the reality is, I'm not a fan of extending a guy with two years of service time and who is not arbitration eligible based upon the strength of one really good season. Let's see him put up another terriffic season first.
I love Grandy, but I can't get behind this move unless it is a serious discount to what I think his arbitration years (and presumably 1 or 2 years of FA) would cost us. Otherwise the injury risk and performance risk just do not justify handing out huge contracts to guys with only 2 years service time. Not that I expect this to be a popular view or anything.

I agree, I wonder why the Tigers did this? Maybe it will make sense when we see the terms.
I could see a deal like this for a younger player at 2 yrs service time, but for 26-yr old Grandy it seems kinda strange - on both sides, actually.

I don't have anything, but I'll venture a guess that it is 5/43 with a hefty option on the 6th year.

While I agree with you on most players, there are a few exceptions to every rule and Grandy IMO is definitely one of those. When you take into account his work-ethic, the way he represents not only the organization, but baseball as a whole, oh, and he's been pretty good those first 2 seasons. When you look at what Colorado locked up Troy T for, I don't know how you can't throw #s out if you are the club and if the agent and player like them great. If not, you have 4 more years to get it done.

Because they want some cost certainty as Granderson plays in his peak years which will be last year, this year, and next year. If he has another 2007ish year in 2008, he'll get really expensive as he enters arbitration. If they extend him at that time they will be paying for post-peak years based on peak season production. This way they lock him up through his peak years without having to buy out too many years on the other side of 30.
If Granderson plays the rest of his contract more like the 2006 version, they still haven't really hurt themselves.

Signing him long term might not be the right thing to do sabermetricly but I think he is one of those special cases that a franchise has to lock up (if it can) because of his marketing potential. With his all around ability and personality, He has a chance to be one of the faces of baseball. He could become very very expensive if they wait another year. It's a risk worth taking.

I had him making 26 mil up until free agency. This is a 1 year/4.25 million extension by that measure.

Man. If I'm DD, I would feel bad for ripping him off. He's worth more than that. I'm glad he's locked up, though.

That's pennies on the dollar for a player like Granderson. I figured somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 mil per season, not $6.

I can't blame Granderson for wanting financial security and protection from a potential career-ending injury. If he kept playing like last year he could have gotten perhaps twice this much, but this way he is still set for life.

Yup. Granderson isn't gonna go crazy and blow it all in a couple years either. I'd be willing to be he hasn't even spent his World Series bonus yet.

30.25 Million for 5 years plus a possible hefty 6th raise, I'm glad to see that Curtis will be here. IMO he will only get better, and that will be doing something after the year he had last year. Congrats Grandy...

If the Tigers can lock up Willis (after 2010), Cabrera, and Verlander, and have a few good drafts, there may be life after the decline and fall of Ordonez, Guillen, Polanco and Renteria.
Granderson, Bonderman, and the three mentioned above form a pretty good core group.

Don't get your hopes up there. I think he'll improve in certain areas (hitting lefties) but overall that was an incredible season. I won't be too upset if he isn't able to improve upon that. I wouldn't be shocked if he does get even better, but that's asking an awful lot I think.

What does this have to do with the term "hometown discount" when it pertains to contracts in sports?
