Default Bad Zumaya News

Just announced on 1130 Am....Zumaya injured his shoulder moving stuff out of his house because of the California wild fires. Said he had surgery and will be out until mid 2008 season. This sucks!

The good news is the Tigers have time to work on replacing him.

He was probably trying to move a couch or recliner by himself down some stairs or something. I don't think he's too bright upstairs.

Oh my gosh that stinks. What horrible news for the Tigers. This is already one of the worst offseasons ever, going back to the decision to move Guillen to 1B. It just keeps getting worse.

Guess Jonesy will be back... This really stinks. Bullpen was already a sore spot, and it showed this past season how much we missed Joel when he was out.

idk about this being "one of the worst offseasons ever," but this is certainly awful news.

When we had the thread about him saying his house was ok, I remember someone (I think it was TTF) saying that he'd feel better if he said his arm was ok.

This is bad news. As Cruzer, said the good news is that they have time to replace him and there are a number of relievers available.

Why did they have to move so quickly on the Renteria trade? Does anyone seriously think the Tigers will have enough pitching to make the playoffs next year? Crud, this is horrible.

I think keeping Jones becomes imminent. And I think we need another solid free agent signing.

I also think Joel'll never be the same again.

I guess Francisco Cordero will be a Tiger once again (I don't know if he was ever in the Majors, but I remember him doing well with the Hens).

I was wondering if this will make the Tigers pursue him.

Everybody knows that "The Bird" is the word.....starting to think that 2006 was his year just like 1976 was Fidrych's.

I don't think Jair Jurrjens is so irreplaceable that the trade was bad. We needed a shortstop and two prospects for a multiple-year All-Star/Gold Glove was a freakin' bargain. The only trade that would have been better, in hindsight, would have been Renteria for Zumaya straight up.

First he hurts himself playing a video game, now moving furniture? The Tigers need to hire this kid a babysitter. This is like a world class pianist punching a wall every time he gets upset or taking up boxing as a hobby.

Come on Joel! We need ya! Wake up already.

Note to young pitchers: Hire movers or just let the crap burn. A $3000 couch is not worth millions in potential earnings.

Can't catch lightin' in a bottle twice, son.

06 was over the top. It was never going to be any better then that. I just wish he'd use his damn head. We have two of the most promising young kids in our orginization, and they both won't use a lick of sense when it comes to this team. (I'm speaking of Zoom and Bondo, for those who don't know what I'm talking about).

He couldn't find his GH Guitar, and thought it fell in the cracks of the couch. Give him a break .... :)

I'm sure they knew about this before the trade.

I really don't see how these two are related. I think they will persue another reliever but loosing one reliever and one of 3-4 guys competing for the 5th spot in your rotation 5 months before the season starts shouldnt sink your playoff hopes completely...if they do then you really didnt have any to begin with

I certainly hope this means we take a good look at Cordero. We can't use the excuse that he will block Zumaya's progress anymore.

You've got to be kidding me.

I thought this was a post from last season, just being bumped. Then I thought it was April Fool's (it is the first of the month).

Wow, just plain wow. Fidrych immediately came to mind.

Will Carroll says there aren't any comps for this, so no idea about retaining arm strength and velocity.

You don't see a connection between the starting rotation and the bullpen? Seriously?

I'm guessing he was due for this injury pretty soon, that it was about to go. The good news is that they might lose him only for a half season. He'll need a long rehab. I'd shut him down for the year.

It's official. Zumaya should be treated like a veal calf. Lock him up in his box and only allow him to leave when it's time to pitch.

We'll feed him well and he'll be the toast of the town. Poor kid just seems a touch snakebit.

The pitching staff needed to be addressed even when JJ and Zumaya were still in the picture. Now the Tigers need 3 new pitchers. 2 starters and a closer. That is going to be really, really difficult to address in one offseason.

I think this makes it less likely that Jones comes back because the Tigers can no longer plan on Zumaya as the closer heir-apparent. Now he is a big-time question mark. It makes more sense now to sign a closer who will be around for 2-3 years.

Go into the season planning to be without him. If Zoom comes back, he's a bonus like a late-season acquisition. If there are complications, you never were relying on him anyway.

The silver lining is the injury taking place so soon after the season ended. This would have been a much bigger blow in February or March.

Seriously, this has wrecked my whole week - not my day, but the whole week. I'm just sitting here shaking my head wondering how much my blood pressure has gone up in the last 15 minutes.

Well, the good news on that, is the week is almost over with.

the bad news is, well, you've taken this too personally.

Look, if this ruins the Tigers season, then shame on the Tigers. It's one dude. IF that causes the Tigers to fall out of contention, then we was doomed from the start.

I'm not sure Zumaya was gonna be the closer anyway. He didn't look good down the stretch and he needs to dial it down a notch emotionally.

Tigers have a SP in house with a host of potentials. If they re-sign Rogers the starting staff is set.

Is this injury that horrible? It's not Granderson, Verlander, Bonderman (yeah I said it), or Mags. The free agency market is strong in one area this offseason: relief pitchers. Zumaya can be replaced. No need for panic.
