I have a bad feeling we will have to get used to Zoom being hurt quite often in his career. Just like Cubs fans with Wood and Prior. Some guys just can't stay healthy and I think Zoom might be one of those.

No doubt, but I wonder if throwing all-out every pitch might have put him in a position to be as injury prone as he's been since joining the Tigers. Having to pace himself might protect him in the long run.

Didn't Zumaya get hurt a lot in the minors too?

Different types of injuries than what he's experienced to date....at the ML level, he's had the finger, the wrist from Guitar Hero, and now the box falling on his shoulder.....at the minor league level he had back issues in the GCL and at West Michigan, a sore shoulder at Lakeland and Erie, and a 'tired arm' at Toledo.....

Don't forget Joel's dad bringing the moral pressure here.
Let's try a little intelligence test.
You're the father of one of the best pitchers in the major leagues. Your house is in danger of burning. You need help getting some stuff moved out of the attic. What's the correct response?
(HINT: DON'T CALL YOUR SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Of course, I'd rather have Rodney and Zoom...but that ain't gonna happen any time soon.
|
Rodney is just inconsistent. He HAS to be able to locate his fastball in order to be effective with his change up. A lot of times he doesnt have great command. His walk numbers arent awful, but they arent great either. And frankly, Rodney is fairly injury prone as well.
Between us never knowing which of the three Todd Jones's are going to show up (1. the guy who gives up 6 straight hits to blow a game 2.) The guy who loads the bases and then gets a strikeout and a double play 3.) The guy who gets two easy outs and then a warning track flyout) and the inconsistent Rodney, I think we definitely have to go outside of the system and bring in at least one good setup man.
I only worry about Rodney because of what I perceive of him from having watched him over the years. He seems to lose focus, makes a dumb mistake here and there, and sometimes even appears to not care. Granted thats all going on my assumption, but I just think he just struggles a bit when the pressure is on more often than we need him to.

I didn't read this whole thread, so perhaps someone else mentioned this. Does anyone else think the story we're getting from Joel about how he injured his shoulder is a cover? A cover for what, I'm not sure, but the injury seems very catastrophic for having a box fall on his shoulder. What was in the box? Acme anvils or what?

An article by Michael Rosenburg over at freep.com claims it was full of memoribilia from the world series and could've weight 60-70 lbs. That much weight falling directly onto your shoulder could have very bad affects.
This is bad news. Just bad news. I hate to say it, but I don't see 'Zoom Zooms' future is very bright. Two major surgeries already? Might have another Kerry Wood syndrome here.

This ain't much, but perhaps it will temper your mood a tad. I found this remark in the one thread RSS started. It's by a doctor, so it's not some dude blowing smoke up our butts. Here's the remark:
"Joel Zumaya's shoulder problem, the result of moving heavy furniture in the face of the California fires, is a significant injury not normally seen in baseball. It's a football injury due to the traumatic nature, with the best known example being Brian Griese. The time frame given by the Tigers, a return at or near midseason, seems solid. Dr. Neil El Attrache of the Kerlan-Jobe clinic concurs. 'Six to eight months for a return to activity seems reasonable,' he told me. He also held out hope for Tigers fans. 'Velocity normally comes back.'" -- Will Carroll, senior writer for Baseball Prospectus

I have no idea. It's plausible but suspicious, but that's kind of the nature of any major injury that tends to occur in the home to an athlete. That said, if he was reaching up and the arm was in an extended, or non neutral position it seems possible.

Wow, Zumaya hurt his shoulder while moving "items" at his home......More like Mr Zumaya was hurt while racing his YZF 450 at the imperial dunes on sat afternoon. I beleive it was about 2:30pm, when we ran into the mess while we were out riding. Z was placed in neck brace and strapped onto a back board and hauled away in a Medic-Rail. There was two rangers on the scene and just a handful of people. Moving Items, More like trying to out jump kid on a dirtbike.

Actually, Joel was out fishing. He caught a monster shark on the end of his line. Wanting to improve his shark tooth collection, he decided to reel him in. As soon as the shark got close enough, he leaped into the air, and landed right on top of Joel. Poor guy did all he could to get out of the way, but the shark had it out for him.
Sounds good to me. Who's next?

I heard that Zoom was pulling trees straight out of the ground with his bare hands in an attempt to clear cut the land and thus stop the fires from spreading. That's how he hurt his shoulder.

I heard Henning on the radio late this afternoon and he said that he had questions about the chronology of events. He seemed to be saying that something didn't add up in the story they were told.

All kidding aside, I'm thankful the box didn't fall on his head, you can't always fix a brain. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well I heard that Joel had been so impressive on Guitar Hero that AC/DC had asked him to sit in during a recent concert in Glascow. During a very long rendition of "poor some sugar on me" he was making a violent circular strumming motion as he did the splits in a duet with Angus and suddenly fell to the stage in horrific pain. The audience fell silent as they escorted him to a waiting ambulance. Now you know... the rest of the story..There was a rumor that he was arm wrestling with Mark Prior..but I will wait until I have confirmation about that one..

Where did the person who posted that say he got his information from? It's interesting, but given Joel's nature, very plausible.

The post came from a comments section on the ESPN site below the article concerning his injury. As they say, consider the source.

It does seem strange that we heard on the 26th that his house was safe:
Notes: Zumaya's home safe from fires
But then five days later we learn that he hurt his shoulder trying to move stuff out of his house.
Based on the timeline, one would assume that the injury would have occured before the 26th. For an injury this severe, it seems like the gap is too long from injury to surgery.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zumaya/the Tigers are trying to cover up the real cause of the injury. The whole situation does seem a little unbelievable, like they are using the tragedy in California to their PR advantage.
And I'm not sure Zumaya will ever be the same. He didn't look to be the same pitcher at the end of last season, returning from his finger surgery, and now he has had another surgery to recover from.
