My brother and I both received a pair of seats for Christmas this morning. Best. Gift. Ever.

Yep. I want to get some astroturf to cover the wood. It makes a great base for them.

I took my seats apart a few weeks ago to do a mini restore job. Broke a bolt and couldn't find a tool to get the damn things apart (those stupid "square" pegs), so now they sit half unassembled in my garage until I have time to deal with it again (and it gets a little warmer).

I was following this thread early on but stopped long ago...
Can someone please tell me, what's the final verdict on the best / most efficient way to get the green paint off of the seats?

The ideas in posts #582-593 seemed like the most sensible to me.

I took my seats apart and put the backs and seat parts in the bathtub, I let them soak for a while and then took a brillo pad and lightly scrubbed the paint off.
I have since painted the metal frames and put them back together. They look great and now proudly sit in my office.
By the way, I used Krylon paint and I fittingly had no runs, no drips, and no errors!

Thought I'd dig up this old thread...
Dad and I each got a pair and worked pretty hard to get them cleaned up. Lots of Simple Green, elbow grease, and time. Didn't repaint because we didn't want to, and we added some banding wire to stablize the bottoms. We're very happy with how they turned out. Here are some progression pics. Hope they don't get too big.

My two pairs are at my folks house. My Dad and I will clean them next week and I'll be moving them with me to San Antonio in September. Where are you guys putting your seats? Are you mounting them somewhere? Let me know the details on this since I'm a mechanical idiot. Thanks.

Lookin' real good! My seats are currently over in my old bedroom at my folks' place. They'll be coming over to the apartment once we empty out the trunk in my wife's car. It's full of stuff we need to drop off at Goodwill, which we hope to accomplish later this week.

I also have no mechanical skills. I did nothing but wash them and stick them in my bedroom. Sometimes I sit in them late in a game when the Tigers need a rally.

I also got the 22 and 23 set. I have them here in my home office after opting to scrub but not paint. I added felt to the bottoms of the feet so they can slide around on the cherry wood floor without scratching.
Folks who come by think they are cool, as do I.

Can't speak for Dad, although I'm pretty sure he doesn't plan on mounting, I won't be mounting them to anything. They'll probably end up in a basement bar at some point.
I do like the felt idea on the bottom though.

Mine are still in the box at my parents house. They will likely stay there until after I get married next August.

Parts for seats wanted
Where can I get parts for the standard plastic 19" wide stadium seats.
I need: Seat numbers, pencil holder, cup holder and I would like to find and isle end support bracket.
Does anyone know the exact color of the green and orange paint.
I have one set of 2 chairs for sale for $ 299.00 in Clarkston, MI
Thank you in advance for any assistance

I've finally got a place to put my seats, so I will finally get working on them. I will be repainting them and building a base as well.
Also, I will be following the happenings of the Tiger Stadium conservancy. I am going to see what, if anything, they may try to do with the orange seats that remain in what's left of the structure. Their master plan calls for replacing them with newer, green seats true to the original Navin Field seats.
If I can get my hands on them, I've got a really cool project planned for my current seats and new orange ones.
I'll post pics when I'm able to do so.

Can you guys share what cleaners you used to get them looking so good? For both the plastic and the rusted metal arm rests? thanks!

There's some posts WRT what you're looking for in this thread. I'm scouring the thread for them now, and when I find them, I'll find them and send you a PM or repost them here.

Another solution:

Heres how to do it.
Dissassemble them down to the frames and seat bottom arms. Now I used paint stripper to strip off the green paint and some of the blue, but you can probably just scrub the green off with hot water and simple green, which is how I cleaned the seat arms. I used a die grinder with a wire wheel to clean the rust and paint scale from the frames. I then sprayed them with rustoleum red oxide primer. I let them dry for about a half hour then sprayed them with Duplicolor Old Ford Blue engine paint.
I didnt strip or prime the arms, I just scrubbed them real good and then painted
As for the seats themselves, 4 augt steel wool took off the green specks and gum. I then hit them with the scrub brush and hot water to get the paint out of the pores in the plastic. 3M plastic cleaner made them shine again, well as much as plastic can shine.
It was about an afternoons worth of time.

Simple Green and warm water, and a lot of elbow grease. Once clean and reassembled, we applied a clear car wax on the frames to make them brighter.
