Rosenthal....Douglass, AA pitcher's props
Yahoo.com
At the bottom
The Tigers got a strong start from newly promoted RHP Sean Douglass last Saturday, and they have three righthanders at Class AA--Justin Verlander, Joel Zumaya and Humberto Sanchez--who could contribute before the season is over. Verlander, the second overall pick in the 2004 draft, throws 95 to 99 mph with an 86 to 87 mph curveball. Zumaya throws 95 to 100, Sanchez 94 to 96.Michigan Football - Dominating the recruitment of 3* Smurfs from 2008-2010

There's no way Sanchez is going to be called up this season.
But I could see at least Veralander getting a Septemberr call, with zumaya also getting some bullpen time depending on where we are in the playoff race.

Article also contained this blurb...
The Astros rejected the Mariners' offer of OF Randy Winn for RHP Brandon Backe. Winn, a switch hitter, doesn't offer enough power to be effective in a platoon with Chris Burke, a righthanded hitter. If the Mets' Mike Cameron remains unavailable, the Astros could zero in on the Tigers' Rondell White or Craig Monroe, both of whom are righthanded hitters. Backe probably would be available only in a larger deal. . . .

I hope they don't bring a young pitcher up before he is ready. That is what they did, in desparation, to my boy van Hekken a couple of years ago. It all but ruined him, although he is still in the game, struggling at Trip. A with the Louisville Bats who are trying to make a reliever out of him. It is possible that he never would have made it, but the premature use of the greenhorn did not help him. Too bad. Heck of a nice kid.
I have thought this over very long and I conclude that there is no reason whatsover for war. It brings suffering, hardship and death, over and over again. War is the antithesis of Love. It, of all things, is most unreasonable. - B. Ringo.

well, it seemed to work with a kid named Bonderman.
We all need to remember that Verlander pitched in college and is capable of pitching at the big league level if his performance warrants it.

Did it work with Bonderman? I mean how do we know he wouldn't be at the same point as a pitcher if he would have just come up last season instead of the season before?
I think we can say it wasn't a failure, but I don't know that we can say whether it was the right idea or not.
As far as Verlander if he continues to dominate AA over the next 3-4 starts then it will get interesting....

Comparing Cornejo and Bonderman is like comparing apples to oranges.
Cornejo's arm was abused during his "magical" 20 game season that Randy seemed obsessed with. He probably should have been pitching in relief for Detroit instead amassing more innings as a starting pitcher. He was not rushed--just misused.
And, yes, I would say it worked with Bonderman. He is having a great year (yesterday's game aside)--how many players his age can claim that? Most rookies struggle--for the few Fernando Valenzuela's and Dontrelle Willis' there are a lot more guys like Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux who take their lumps early in the their major league career. Bonderman was no different, and appears to be much better off for it.
