Wow.
OK, so let me get this crystal clear, this thread was an exceptionally long read...
1.) Charley Marcuse has been banned from singing at Comerica Park.
2.) A bunch of fans have *apparently* complained that he makes "annoying" sounds.
3.) Someone took the time to actually call Charley's boss and complain about him.
Allow me about fifteen minutes to backtrack this entire thread, gather specific examples, and shed some light on this situation.

I think this thread is more of the opposite for a lot us. Charley seems to be loved and hated, and I mentioned on my blog how he should be allowed to sing. Others disagreed, and it's a nice big back and forth. I think the people who called actually called to complain that he wasn't allowed to sing.

It's a damn good thing that I am not Charley's boss. If I was sitting in my office and got a call from Biff Mayhem supporting Charley, I'd call that frank hawking soprano into my office and fire him on the spot.

As for the supporters of Charley, much appreciation.
As for the negative twits who have nothing better to say than trite monosyllabic garbage, shame on you.
First of all, I would like to start with an extremely broad statement, "THIS is what's wrong with Detroit."
Everyone has some kind of excuse or justification as to why this city has been in a steady decline for the past fifty years. Some blame it on the influx of African Americans, some blame it on the mayors, some blame it on the move of Motown from Detroit to Los Angeles, some blame it on the pollution, some blame it on the lack of commerical zones, some blame it on the low land values, some blame it on the car companies, some blame it on the lack of education, some blame it on crack and heroin, some blame it on lack of jobs, some blame it on the fish, some blame it on the trees, some blame it on the flu, some blame it on clowns, some blame it on Number 2 pencils... are you starting to catch my drift?
Everyone has some excuse, legitimate or not, as to why this city is in shambles. Yet, what have any of you really done to help rebuild the city? Ah yes, that's what I thought, nothing. You sit on your rears and point fingers and criticize, yet do nothing to help out. Either that, or you moved to the suburbs where you can get away from the crack and the African Americans and the poverty. You live in the suburbs and don't allow your children to go to Detroit because ,"It's too dangerous, you might get robbed." We all have stories similar to this, I do also. I am just as much at fault in this as all you harbingers of negativity.
So, when we really boil down what Detroit has, what do we get? Not much. Just a bunch of Red Wings fans who have horrible sportsmanship, and Electonic Music Festival whose attendance is usually of those under the age of 25, a few big building, some decent restaurants, and a whole lot of murder and crime. I blame it on the people of Metro Detroit, not on any of the aforementioned reasons. It's because of apathy, being complacent in mediocrity, and never giving anyone the chance to excel.
I point my finger at all of you who can't get past the idea of dead silence, occaisional clapping, and maybe a few nervous cheers at a baseball game. It spreads like a petilence over the crowd when you come and sit next to decent people who just want to have fun, but are afraid of being belittled or shot a nasty look. Yes, it's true, you affect the sports games like a plague.
Charley Marcuse isn't the problem here guys, you are. There are a great deal of other things that I personally find to be more of a relevant topic than "SCREW THAT HOT DOG VENDOR!" Such as: gum on the seats, the smell of beer, slick steps, poor sportsmanship, overinflated paychecks, etc.
Stop being such jaded cynics and get over yourself for a brief moment. No one wants to hear about how much you hate this, or how much you hate that. If you don't like how someone acts, DEAL WITH IT.

This is a little deep :-). But good none the less. It's bad enough most people dislike their jobs. If someone can do it in a unique fashion and in a way they enjoy, all the better.
The guy sells hotdogs. The only guys who should complain are the other hotdog guys, because I wait for Charley to come around to buy from him. But then it's their fault for not rising to the occasion like Charley.
I did think it was great, and someone mentioned this earlier, how he got everyone, including our section, to sing for him (I was in 132). Class act.

Third, I don't have a third.
Fourth, Carlos Pena still sucks.
Fifth, I rather enjoy hearing people talk on this board about things they hate. So saying that no one wants to hear about things people hate would be false.Last edited by Hongbit; 05-19-2004 at 03:55 PM.

As I stated in my original response, I am pointing my finger at myself in the same respect. Stupidity was not implied, but I can see how it might have come off as being such.
The apology was meant in response to Brian, who made mention of my verbal bash as being a "little too deep."
I didn't mean for it to come off as such.

I thought Hellfaucet's post was funny. But not funny enough to say Dang.
"For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land."

It didn't go over my head. But it WAS a needlessly wordy attempt at being deep for the sake of sounding smart. And let's not reply with "just because you didn't get it..." I got it. It was stupid.

The smiley face after my too deep comment was meant to make it a joke. I actually thought the post was pretty profound and well written. Just something I'm not used to seeing on a Tiger's message board.

I personally don't care for the guy and have also witnessed him kind of bother people. And he's done it with peopl near me which was bothersome as well.
That said maybe they can have a compromise. Once a game he can sing. Keep it at that and then sell hotdogs. Even the people that hate his singing could tollerate that. I could.

I admit I'm part of the problem.
If Charlie were Muslim he could at least yell Hoooottt Dooooggg

It reminded me of that episode of the Simpsons......
*I'm paraphrasing*
Lisa: Bart! Bart! Krusty just fired his stage manager live on air!
Bart: I'm reading!
Lisa: Get out! You? Reading?
*looks at book*
Lisa: The 10 habits of highly effective preteens?
Bart: Correct.......most people use 10% of their brains. I am now one of them. Before my energy was all over the place, now it's fully focused into one laser beam. Well, this has truly been fun, but I must get back to my reading....
*Bart stands up, puts his arm around Lisa, and begins walking to the door*
Lisa: Are you standing up to get me to leave?

Charlie has also sold Choco malt cups at the games too! I was at a day game against the Red Sox a few years back and gave him 10 bucks if he wouldn't sing for the reat of the bottom half of the inning! I have 4 seats right on the end of the row, so needless to say I was getting an earful. He laughed and was cool with it. Then, I said go ahead if it helps you make money and he said I have no idea how much it helps him make loot! I really don't care for it, but I have more important things to worry about then this clown adding a little something different to the ballpark experience while he has a little fun in the process.

Bloomfield, eh? What high school? With the condescension, which is always something I enjoy, I'm wondering if my guess is correct.Originally posted by CHRIS_HELLFAUCET
First of all, I would like to start with an extremely broad statement, "THIS is what's wrong with Detroit."
As far as your rant. It was just idiotic. First of all, the reasons for the decline of Detroit are not exactly up for debate. They're pretty well known. The culprits which are usually blamed are few and can be agreed on by pretty much everyone living north of 8 Mile. Second, why this diatribe here? It's the Tigers forums on a sports message board. This is where people post meaningless crap as a diversion to everything else. Are there bigger injustices in life than having to listen to some idiot selling hot dogs singing off-key? Of course, but that's never been up for debate. If you want a civics debate on Detroit's socioeconomic problems, there are plenty of places to do that. Third, contrary to your multisyllabic ramblings, most metro Detroiters love Detroit. They've chosen areas for their families in their best interest. Detroit isn't just the Red Wings and the EMF. Detroit has one of the top Orchestra's and Opera Theaters in the nation, not to mention some top-notch culture. There is a renewed commitment to downtown and slowly it's turning around. People will go where it's safe, and where there are attractions. You can't possibly fault the everyday suburbanite for going to safe areas for attractions they want to go to. Detroit has a few of them and people are going downtown, in time, a critical mass will be reached and downtown's rebirth will be complete. Fourth, your comment about Tigers games is ridiculous. The Tigers have some of the most passionate fans in baseball, even when they've been one of the worst teams. Not liking Charley isn't an indictment on one's passion for Tigers baseball. Finally, if you want to bring up a topic, do so. As far as being condescending goes, I always enjoy it, but atleast pull out something that merits it.

1.) Sorry to burst your bubble, bub, but i graduated high school a long time ago. Point one, shot down, way to offer me nothing but assumptions. Also, are you insiniating something about where I live?
2.) It's here because *I* felt it neccessary. I mean the point here is not about Charley anymore, it's about the fans necessity to undermine anything out of the ordinary. The season ticket-holder most likely responsible for Charley's operatic demise most likely is an affluent businessman who neglects his children and drive a Mercedez (yes, most likely from my neck of the woods).

I never insinuated you were in high school, you just have that Bloomfield Hills private school way. I say this because I went to a private school in Bloomfield Hills many years ago.
Come on, I can't even take your second point seriously. If you're affluent, drive a Benz, and have season tickets you neglect your children? I really want to take what you're saying seriously, but I just can't. Most people have nothing against out-of-the-ordinary. Look at The Brow. He was beloved in this town. Look at the idea of throwing a dead octopus onto the ice after a playoff goal. Hell, look at the phenomenon Fidrych was. People like creative and they like the strange, but sometimes, it's just annoying.
By the way, I like the asterisks by the 'I'. Well done.Last edited by MotorCityOrangeman; 05-20-2004 at 12:55 PM.

hey hey hey
this thread seems to have taken a turn for the worse. lets examine whats going on here: we are all baseball fans, in particular, the same team. no need to get testy with ones own kind. all thats up for debate is whether or not we agree with charley's muteing. now for some of us (like hellfaucet and myself) this is of personal relevancy, as we are good friends of the singing hot dog man, and although he is so much more to us than that, it is a part of him we know and love, like an appendege, or something. we are robbing detroit of the little comfortable culture we have. let us have our reliable cards, who consistently brighten our moods. let us have that someone who will sing to us that isnt asking for crack money. let the bouncy kids who cant handle a whole game have their fun. other people besides angy, unlaid, balding 40 yr old men who pay much more attention to the nuance of the game then their own wavering hygine. please let them have the rounded baseball experience we have been blessed with, thanks in part (be it big or small) to a hot dog man many of us know and love.

I like lots of strange and unusual things. In fact, I am one of the few here who have absolutely no problem with the ferris wheel or merry go round. What I dislike is stupid, pointless and annoying things. Like, for instance, your buddy Charlie. When I am at a ball game with my wife I want to enjoy her company. I don't mind talking to vendors. In fact, I chit chat with the vendors every game. What I don't want is someone to approach me, be a complete and utter idiot, and not go away. It's here because *I* felt it neccessary. I mean the point here is not about Charley anymore, it's about the fans necessity to undermine anything out of the ordinary.
