I absolutely loved that, and knowing Pudge's reputation and passion for the game, he can do it.

Yes and a few years ago people like Giambi, Jeter, ARod, Ordonez, etc were getting a hell of a lot more than that...

I couldn't give a rat's a** about the contract (it's fine, by the way). This is a terrific signing, and I refuse to compare it to the the bad deals of this team's recent past. This is a totally different player, person and situation. It's all good.

Myself, I was also infavor of a 3 year deal. My worries were the same as yours Dave. I'm not mad at all about this contract though. I know you have to give a little to get a little. Which is what the 4th year of the contract means to me. What I really like about the contract is the termination clause, which is new to the Tigers.

It's new to most ballplayers. I think it was just plain genius on the part of DD and Illitch to put that clause in his contract and that is how I can be comfortable with the length and terms.

Can you say $20+ million per season for Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez? Imagine if the inflation would have continued....

Mark The Shark,
I know he wouldn't have come here for two years or even three but I was just posting what my opinion concerning the whole situation was. I think I only did that once - maybe twice - in those 100 or so threads we had going and thought I'd post it again.
Even before the Pudge signing I was pretty impressed with our offseason moves and would've had no problems if we didn't sign him to three years $30 mil and kept that money until we were able to address what other needs we may have had in June or July or whenever next year. I would've had no problems with that whatsoever. I posted that once but with the tons of posts going on I'm sure I'm the only one that remembers it.
I'm not trying to get in a battle here. Just thought I should clarify my position on why I said what I said before.
That said there is a part of me that still is very excited about the move and I'm glad we got him at 4 years with a few of the concerns I expressed possibly covered. And like you said he may stay healthy. But even healthy I don't know what the odds of him producing at the plate as well as I'd like him to would be in three years. Not overly great I suspect. Maybe Qsilver can confirm or deny this with his statistical stuff.

Ah, you make the most excellent point here and something that's been on my mind. Improvements in training and the education thereof, will make a huge difference over the next couple of years for athletes that take care of themselves. These advances have already had an impact on this one guy named Barry Bonds, and I wouldn't call him an old man. It's definitely a possibility that Pudges skills may not diminish before his 36th birthday. A possibility that most seemed to have ruled out.

Look at how long the original Pudge, Cartlon Fisk played for and was effective. Its certainly not out of the question that Ivan could remain productive well into the twilight of the contract. Its just his last three years with Texas that scare me.

Forgive me. I just got home from work and know nothing about what transpired today apart from what I've read here. As I understand it, Pudge signed and the presser form him began around 1PM. Is that right?
If so, was it carried by Fox Sports Detroit?
I ask because I set the VCR for that station before I left for work this morning.

Yes on both counts Rob Jones. It was a good presser the only slip up was Illitch momentarily forgetting Bill Freehan's name, which was funny but understandable with all the camera's and press mikes on him.
