Default National's Danny Espinosa: Should the Tigers target him?

    Motorcity Bengals story:
Second base steal - Motor City Bengals - A Detroit Tigers Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Espinosa is a second baseman capable of putting up 20-20 stat lines...

But the offensive is only half the story: this guy is a plus defender.
There's a lot of SABR stats on the linked page, many of which I don't understand. What do y'all think?

It might be hard to justify getting him after Infante gets the World Series MVP Award.

Isn't Infante hitting about .315 this year while playing solid to very good second base? What more do you want?

he's alright. Infante is much better, though.

The only problem is the last two years he hit in the .270's. Which still isn't bad, but I wouldn't make the assumption that Omar is going to continue hitting .315 the next couple years just because he is this year. Espinosa is also 5 years younger. You shouldn't pass him off just because Omar his hitting .315 this year, IMO.

If the cost to acquire him isn't high, the reward may outweigh the risk. Plus, there's no guarantee that Infante returns to Detroit next year. And if he does, Espinosa can take over as the primary reserve IF.

    Hammer head on the nail!

I wasn't suggesting that Infante should be discarded, but rather if DD can get Espinosa for cheap (the author likens the situation to when the Tiger picked up Peralta for minor leaguer) it would be nice to have another option in the minors for if:

a.) Infante does not come back to Detroit
b.) Infante does not continue to play at this present level

I don't know how "cheap" will be, there really isn't a lot available for SS/2B this off season so teams that are looking for infield help may consider Espinosa a legitimate upgrade. Also the Tigers already have Perez and Worth, and that assumes that the Tigers don't keep Santiago around for another year.

Espinosa is not a horrible player by any means, I just think the Tigers have other options than to trade for a potential bench player in Espinosa. My hunch is Santiago may well get another 1 year deal and fill in as needed day to day for the 2014 season. And if it's a DL issue at 2B or SS, Perez will likely get the call for a majority of the starting ML time coming from from AAA for the duration of the injury.

Also, why get Espinosa at all if we think Infante is coming back? If Infante leaves, sure pull the trigger on the Espinosa deal, but until then, don't pay extra for a spare tire the Tigers likely will not need.

Infante is going to get a 3 year deal.

I think it is more likely than not that he will be playing elsewhere next year.

Danny Espinosa is an interesting option if they can't sign Infante. Kelly Johnson would be a decent stopgap, but Espinosa is someone who could help long-term if healthy.

I like the Kelly Johnson suggestion. If they go with Castellanos and Perez next year, on top of all the other risk factors, they're back to being very RH in the lineup.

I just can't bring myself to worry too much about second base.

I don't know if Perez would be good enough, but he was voted best defensive 2b in the eastern league, or something. I'd be ok with him. I like the idea of elite defense in the middle infield.

I love strong defense up the middle especially given what they have on the corners, so I'm open to that option if he is truly an outstanding defender. I know he's good, but am not sure how good. He'd need to be way above average since he probably won't produce much offensively.

Jackson is overrated defensively, but has enough offense where he doesn't need to be elite.
