Detroit mayor calls wrong N.C. city
Detroit mayor calls wrong N.C. city
June 5, 2002, 8:39 AM
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Mayor Charles Meeker didn't receive a call from Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to place a bet on the first game of the Stanley Cup finals.
That's because the Detroit mayor's office called the wrong city.
Meeker called Detroit to make a mayor-to-mayor bet. Raleigh usually bets an oak tree seedling, because it is "The City of Oaks."
When Kilpatrick's office called back, he got Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, who corrected the caller and directed the call to Meeker.
Meeker still was trying to place a bet on Tuesday.
"Maybe by the time the series is over, perhaps the mayor of Detroit will know where the Hurricanes are based," Meeker said.
Carolina beat Detroit 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night.
A message left with Kilpatrick's office Wednesday was not immediately returned.VT My Ocean

Who cares? Alot of people who follow hockey think the Carolina Hurricanes are based in Charlotte.
An oak seedling? Blah. How about they put up some moonshine instead?

I thought this to be an embarassing gaffe.
Peter Karmanos owns the team for Chrissakes. The guy that holds a lot of hope for the future of downtown Detroit. You'd think the mayor would know how often he takes a dump, let alone where his pro hockey team is based.
Just my opinion. :rolleyes:VT
