Put Ilya Kovalchuk in a Red Wings jersey
It now seems certain that he will be moved very soon. I'm not advocating trading for him, nor am I sure if any of these trades would actually work. I'm just curious to see what everyone thinks it would take to get him. And conversely how much you'd be willing to give up to get an elite player.
So, if you were Kenny H, what trade would you make to get Kovalchuk?
Idea 1:
Kronwall
Cleary
Leino
Larsson
Idea 2:
Datsyuk
Lebda
Leino

I wouldn't trade anything for Kovalchuk since he wants the max contract under the salary cap (even more than Ovechkin who is the highest paid player right now). Why give up a ton to get a rental?
And neither of those proposals would work (they don't need Larsson, Leino probably has zero trade value, and Lebda probably isn't very attractive), Waddel wants high picks (demanding that Bruins include the pick they got from Toronto) and blue chip prospects along with players who can contribute now (they're in the playoff race still). I wouldn't say the Wings are bursting with either. It'd probably take something like... Filpulla, Tatar, Kindl, and a couple first rounders or something stupid.

Trading Datsyuk for Kovalchuk would be the worst mistake in Red Wings history.

^^ Elaborate. I think Datsyuk is easily the most expendable star on the team.

Datsyuk is one of the most complete players in the league, in my opinion.

I agree.
Besides the Wings already have an elite player joining them soon... Franzen.

Yeah... lots of youth. I knew my trade proposals were wack. I was looking at it completely as a Wings fan and each players value in that context. Those proposals have a completely different look from the Thrashers point of view.

I also agree. And I love Datsyuk as well, but he just doesn't score enough (especially in the playoffs) to justify the top center spot. Sure, he can dazzle in shootouts and he is probably the best defensive forward in the league, but he crumbles in the clutch.

Idea 1
Our defense would lose our only real good defenseman south of 36 years old. Stuart is ok and Ericsson is struggling, I wouldn't trade our only real good younger dman for another forward
Idea 2
I am not sure I would trade Datsyuk for Kovalchuk straight up, you point out Datsyuks playoff struggles, he had a solid playoffs 2 seasons ago, thats one more than Kovalckuk has ever had, how do you know Kovalchuk wont struggle in the playoffs, because he has never been there. I mean he only has 1 goal and 1 assist in his 8 career playoff games. And once he gets his new contract he is going to be making more than Datsyuk.

He's had a few good playoffs (PPG during the last cup). Kovalchuk has only been in one playoff series in his career, only four games, and he scored an overwhelming 1 goal and 1 assist.
I don't subscribe to the whole "clutch" thing as much as others, but I don't think Datsyuk really crumbles.

When November rolls back through, I have something to be thankful for. I'll be thankful that Elevate doesn't have Kenny's job.

My friend randomly had a "source" yesterday, and told me Kovy was going to the Devils, and told me a package that was right except for the prospect. Pretty crazy.

It's done: Kovalchuk heads to New Jersey - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports
Quote:
All the rumors and all the speculation can now come to an end. Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) has finally been traded. Atlanta sent the Russian sniper to New Jersey in exchange for a package yet to be announced after days of speculation that a deal would go down.
Kevin Allen of USA Today alerted the world earlier this evening that a deal would go down and it would happen tonight. At 7:30 p.m., Allen confirmed that it was the Devils who made the best offer to Thrashers GM Don Waddell.
As Wysh broke down the contenders this morning, he noted that New Jersey has quietly been in the mix for Kovalchuk and with Thrashers associate GM Rick Dudley in attendance at a Lowell Devils game in New Jersey last night, signs began pointing towards Lou Lamoriello pulling the trigger on a deal.
More information coming as the package heading to Atlanta is revealed.

Why would the Wings have traded anything for Kovalchuk when they could have simply retained a comparable player, Hossa, this past off-season.

No need to get nasty. I clearly stated that I wasn't endorsing any of the trades or even calling for getting Kovalchuk. The Devils just got a whole lot scarier though.
Also, for those railing against my opinion of Datsyuk, are you really satisfied at this point with 15 goals for the supposed best player on the team? When the Wings have failed in the playoffs, it's because their offense dries up. It doesn't bode very well for a struggling offensive team, who have had scoring issues in playoffs past, to have their top player on pace to score only 23 goals. I'm saying that out of Hank, Mule, Lidstrom and Datsuyk, Pavel is the one I'd be least upset about losing.

In case you guys are wondering: Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier and a 1st for Kovalchuk
Interesting to see Cormier traded.

Insane? He is 3 years younger than Z and 5 years younger than Dats, and has more goals than both of them combined this season.

You'd trade a top 10 NHL player, who is signed long term, for a one way goal scorer who isn't even likely to play in the NHL next season?

Dennis: Sorry. I was not addressing your comment.
I should have made myself more clear. Elevate started this thread, inferring there may be a trade or move in the works involving Kolvachuk. He implied the RedWings may be involved. Dats for Kolvachuk. No way. Dats is a 2 way star and theres no way.

Really??? Can you not read? This statement was in the opening paragraph of the first post in this thread:
"I'm not advocating trading for him, nor am I sure if any of these trades would actually work."
I was trying to start a conversation in this (pretty boring) forum and everyone gets all buttsore about it. What a bunch of stiffs.

Yeah, by creating controversy, haha. If this forum WAS boring, no one would have challenged your posts.
Don't even insinuate that we're buttsore, or even a bunch of stiffs because you threw together a few (terrible) trade proposals and are surprised that no one went "gee, nice trade!"
You (hopefully) know/knew they couldn't afford him, and even suggesting to trade Datsyuk for an expiring player is bad enough.
If you made the thread, you're advocating somewhat. I mean, look at the damn thread title.
You misrepresented yourself, at best. That's on you.
