Vintage Yzerman - '87 Wings
I loved that '87 run. Coming back from a 3-1 deficit to Toronto in the Norris Finals (equivalent to today's conference semi-finals), Hanlon's heroics, Demers' enthusiasm, raucous crowds at the Joe, those little girls singing the national anthem, pushing the Oilers a bit. I was living in d/t Toronto going to U of T during the school year then, and just a few months later the epic Jays-Tigers pennant race came to a head.

Wow, that was so long ago. Glen Hanlon still playing, Dave Lewis still playing. That was before I was totally beaten down by life.

Me too, I was 19 and working for Chrysler in a foundry, I felt like a character in a Bob Seger song. Grinding steel was a loud and dirty job so when working the evening shift there was no way to listen to radio or watch TV during work. But we kept up to date on the Wings playoff games even during the 2 hours between coffee breaks. The guy at the start of the line would write goal flashes in chalk onto the wood of the moving line and 5,10 or 20 minutes later the guys further down the line would be able to read it. A very old-school, low-tech, rudimentary version of today's Game Day Threads.

For sure. Even as a fan, it was interesting how to see how his girls have grown up. One was born around the time of the '97 Cup I believe, another came up with him to collect the Cup at centre ice in '02.
I liked his tribute to #19 Brian Trottier too.

wow.... I was in 8th grade and remember it like yesterday. I still think that was my favorite playoff series ever.
Thanks for posting these.
Joe Louis was a newer arena in 1987 than Comerica Park is today.

1987 was a great year to be a Detroit sports fan. Probably the most exciting non-championship season ever, as the Wings, Pistons and the Tigers all made it to their league's semi-finals (although none of the three advanced to their league's championship final). Wings made their first semis since '66, in a remarkable turnaround. Pistons likely would have defeated the Celtics if not for the famous Isaiah throwaway. Tigers outlasted the Jays after those seven 1-run games in the final week and a half of the season. And the Lions ...? 4W 11L, lol.

What a year for a kid to fall in love with Detroit sports. I remember my father running up to my room to tell me whenever the Wings scored during those late games against Edmonton (it was past my bedtime). Little did he know that I was listening to the game on a Go-Bots walkman. All those names remind me of this
