Default Stafford takes advantage of 12 men on the field

Just a quick blurb that I was going to post earlier and forgot to.

Yesterday (Friday), Schwartz was on the Sean and Terp show here in Grand Rapids (96.1 FM). One of them asked a question about Stafford's development. Schwartz mentioned talked about something that happened in the Seattle game. The Lions were at 3rd and 20 after Stafford got sacked the previous play. Stafford had just completed an 18 yard pass. Schwartz said he immediately started talking with the booth upstairs trying to see if they should challenge the spot. He looks up, and sees that Stafford is starting the play!

A some point he later talked to Stafford and said: "Hey, it's great that he made the yards, but why don't you let the coach decide if we're going to try on 4th down or not." Stafford responded that he knew that Seattle had 12 men on the field and he wouldn't have started the play if he didn't know they would get the play one way or another.

Gotta say, that's impressive that a rookie QB would not only see the 12 men, but have the initiative to call the play by himself and do it.

I so hope Stafford is the guy for the Lions. We've had so many "saviors", but none that actually saved. I would love to see another Barry Sanders come along, but a back like that is rare. Hell, I'd even settle for a Billy Sims. These blackouts get old in a hurry. Luckily, I'll be at my sister's in Cedar Springs for Thanksgiving, so I'll see that game, sell-out or not.

I agree it takes a lot of moxie for a rookie QB to do that. He does have to cut down on the mistakes, but I think a better supporting cast will help with that. I'm really hoping he's Detroit's answer to Troy Aikman. The 2nd of many pieces (CJ being first)

I am also impressed that the Lions got a guy that can count to twelve.
