I don't see that happening, but to each their own.

I think it's way too early to write off Williams. He'll likely return punts at the very least, and could factor in the offense a bit.
I think he'll return kicks more than punts with Northcutt on the roster now...that's the secondary reason i don't like this trade, hindering a young player developing...

Northcutt only returned a few punts last year, and Williams is more of a punt returner than kickoff returner. Competition isn't a bad thing, especially for a 3rd round pick. It would also be pretty easy for the Lions to cut Northcutt before the season starts. Once the season starts, his 2.75 million is guaranteed.

Then I'd be even more pissed...

Receivers typically don't contribute in their first year.

I guess the Lions really didn't think that much of Alexander anyways:

Link: Lions trade Gerald Alexander, who was likely to get cut anyway - Detroit Lions: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio, Schedule & Stats - MLive.com

"In judging the value of the trade, one of the main factors is that Alexander probably wasn't going to make the Lions' roster anyway. And, if he did, he wouldn't have seen much playing time.

The Lions' new coaching staff wasn't impressed by Alexander, who they felt lacked the explosion and quickness to be effective at that position. The neck injury that Alexander suffered last year was not an issue because the coaches went back to look at tape of Alexander before the injury to see if there was a noticeable decline in play -- and a possibility that he might bounce back. They didn't see much difference in his production."

That's not really true...depends on the situation...I'm talking more about his returning reps anyway.

Per TomK at Mlive, this trade was made because the new coaching staff doesn't like Alexander and he probably wasn't going to make the team. They looked at him in minicamp and tape of him before the neck injury and he doesn't have the quickness and explosion that they look for in a safety. So they got what they could for him. Another failed 2nd round draft pick of the Millen era.
