EAST LANSING -- One thing can be concluded from the Michigan State men's basketball team's exhibition game against Grand Valley State.
The Spartans’ second team, with the help of a few first-stringers, probably would win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference North Division.
Michigan State defeated the Lakers, who are picked to win the GLIAC North and ranked No. 7 in the Sporting News Division II preview poll, 76-53, on Monday night at Breslin Center.
The Spartans, ranked second in The Associated Press Division I preseason poll, triumphed in their final exhibition game before Friday’s season opener against Florida Gulf Coast with Raymar Morgan (ankle), Chris Allen (groin) and Delvon Roe (concussion) on the bench.
In their absence, reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas led the way with 18 points.
MSU coach Tom Izzo gave such youngsters as Draymond Green, who never had logged more than 24 minutes last season, and backups the floor. Green had 15 points in 27 minutes.
Sophomore backup point guard Korie Lucious added 12 points.
Toreau Brown led GVSU with 10 points.
Big Ten Standings:
TBD

Haha, I figured you'd respond. Transfer student, never lived in allendale, havent really had much time for football or basketball games, etc etc. It's not to say I don't support GV, I just havent gotten really into the sports teams much. I'll stick with my Spartans.

no one knows anything about FGCU. Then again, who cares I guess....
They have arguably the top college left-hander available in next year's MLB draft in Chris Sale, and Joe Coleman's son pitched there. That's all I have.

Well I guess if basing it off the only GV/MSU game to occur while you're at GV...that's fine...you missed the good 'ole days when GV was taking down the Sparties and/or pushing them to the limit with two minutes left.
I have a bad feeling about the start of this season. So many injuries, which are bad in and of themselves, but I'm worried about what they've done to practice time. Thats where Izzo makes a name for himself, but if he can't work with the entire team (or 3 of the top 6 players....), I'm worried how thats going to affect the season. Maybe it won't matter as much come March, but we have a lot of tough games coming up in the next month. I'd hate to see us slide a seed (or more) because of these injuries.
Gonzaga is going to be tough, and it will only be Allen's 2nd game (assuming he plays on Friday), and if we're lucky, Morgan's first game. They're gonna be rusty as hell.

MSU signed the ESPN #3 class in the country, Scout #8, I think 7 or 9 on Rivals (but I don't see Payne listed on Rivals, so....). Thats our highest ranking in a while (can only see as far back as 2005, and this is Izzo's highest in that span). Had a comparable class in 2007. Hopefully this class can keep the FF streak together. I like Izzo's chances.

Still fail to see what kind of "irony" lies in me posting a picture of Kevin Garnett in a Michigan t-shirt.
The ironic part was the second half of the equation: you then getting on Rip for wearing an MSU shirt. (You can upgrade and be a M fan, but he can't do the same for MSU? More or less). I'm not sure why this needs explanation, and as long as you weren't seriously hatin on Rip, its irrelevant.

I just don't agree with not having the school you go to being your #1 team when that school is one of the best in the country at what they do...I know there's reasons for it though, and I accept that. Like he said, he's a transfer student, and isn't really familiar.
I mean, going to Cornerstone and being an MSU/UM fan is one thing...
Also, yea I am a UM fan...but they're not my #1 school in any sport besides hockey, because my school doesn't have NCAA hockey.

I grew up a Spartan fan, but now go to Villanova for law school. I'm cheering for the Wildcats, and already have tickets to quite a few games, but deep down I will always be a MSU fan..

Good stuff from MSU...Here's the box score for those interested. Did what you should do against a clearly inferior opponent. Tuesday brings Gonzaga, and what should be a better early season barometer for where we're at.

Nix has been a revelation, excellent basketball IQ, good instincts, this team is deeperer than any in memory.

didn't watch but looking at the stats... not looking good for Roe with 5 PFs in 13 minutes and Raymar 0-4 from FT. That's just not good stuff... big game vs. Gonzaga

The progress Nix has made over the last 18 months....Just ridiculous. An absolute tribute to the work ethic and determination of the young man. Now, don't get me wrong, once he starts seeing some more athletic frontcourts (UNC and UT in the next month in particular) some of those boards and buckets he grabbed and scored tonight, are going to come that much tougher...But there's so much to like with Nix (outstanding hands and feet).

Roe was fine, he looked a little rusty, ball just didn't bounce well for him toinight. Raymar got some run, but he didn't really belong out there. I'm a bad Raymar judge, not a fan. Green is.. what Morgan was advertised to be..

He's frustrated me too... kinda like Suton did his first 2 yrs... but Suton improved and Raymar has stayed the same or gotten worse. Hope he shows up this season...

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State needed something to help it wake up during its opener against Florida Gulf Coast.
Durrell Summers delivered.
His slam on an alley oop sparked a run in the first half that the second-ranked Spartans used to pull away from the Eagles en route to a 97-58 win Friday night.
"It gets a little more electrifying if you can have those big-time plays," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Those plays do get people going. The players, fans, cheerleaders, everybody got excited with that dunk."
The Spartans (1-0) started sluggish, turning the ball over four times in less than 4 minutes and failing to take the lead until the 15:22 mark of the first half.
Florida Gulf Coast scored four more go-ahead baskets until Summers' dunk off Chris Allen's lob put the Spartans ahead 18-17 midway through the first half.
"How we played early is what we're going to focus on, and not so much the second half," said Eagles head coach Dave Balza, a Michigan graduate. "I don't think people realize how quick they are. We played Kansas last year and there's no doubt, Michigan State is a faster team."
Anthony Banks led the Eagles (0-1) with 10 points and former Michigan guard Reed Baker scored nine.
Summers scored 14 of his 17 points before halftime and Kalin Lucas had 14 of his 21 points in the second half, helping the Spartans win their 33rd straight home opener and 40th nonconference game in a row at the Breslin Center.
"Now, we get Gonzaga here," Lucas said. "I can't wait!"
Raymar Morgan made a surprising appearance for Michigan State, playing on a sprained right ankle that was expected to keep him out after he missed two exhibition games.
The senior forward was welcomed by a rousing ovation when he entered the game with 14:39 left in the first half. Morgan was 0 for 4 from the field and 0 for 4 from the line in 9 minutes before resting in the second half.
"Raymar really wanted to play," Izzo said. "The ankle is not ready and it probably won't be for another two weeks, but it'll be more ready Tuesday than it was today.
"He didn't re-injure it, but it was getting stiff at halftime."
Chris Allen and Delvon Roe also returned for the Spartans after missing their preseason game against Grand Valley State. Allen had a groin strain and Roe a concussion.
"We had everybody in uniform, but we didn't have everybody back," Izzo said. "I don't think we're near where we're going to be, but we have to get better or we're going to be in trouble."
Michigan State avoided another setback when Draymond Green limped off the court with 3:13 left. Green was trying keep weight off his right leg after an 11-point, 10-rebound game, but Izzo said the sophomore forward simply had cramps.
"He just wanted to make a big-time departure," Izzo joked.
Allen had 10 points and five assists and reserve Korie Lucious added 11 points and eight assists for the Spartans. Derrick Nix scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds - a record for a Michigan State freshman in his debut - in just 15 minutes.
The 6-foot-8, 280-pound center has lost about 50 pounds since he won the Mr. Basketball award last season playing for Detroit Pershing High school.
"He's sweat a lot of weight off," Izzo said. "It's nice to see him rewarded."
Very excited for the game against Gonzaga, bidding on some last minute tickets on ebay now. Hopefully thatll go through!
KleShreen, when MSU lost to GV I was still at GRCC. I do remember the facebook group though(not sure if you were part of that or not), people got a little crazy in there.

Man, that was a great game. I was at B-Dubs so didn't keep great track of stats or what was going on. Summers was great - Lucas (besides that last shot), Roe, and Nix's free throws - not so much.
Also, I have to give a bunch of credit to Gonzaga. I'm pretty surprised they aren't ranked. They have some really talented big guys that get rebounds and some good guards as well.

I love these type of games and hats off to Izzo for being willing to schedule them. Gonzaga will be a top 15 team before it's over, so much height and such good shooters. Few is solid.
This game reminded me of how we played in the tourney, turnovers, sloppy offense and then just a refusal to lose and TOM IZZO..the plays we run out of time outs down the stretch..just amazing..and they have been for years.
Liked the work Shermator and Nix chipped in tonght..Delvon Roe..somebody kidnapped him..if he comes back..we will be pretty tough..so many contibutors on any given night.
Good learning expereince to begin the year..

Zags giving MSU all they can handle right now at Breslin. Up 9 with 13 left.
Kalin the Overrated having trouble shooting the ball and Draymond looks lost.
This post is why Canadians do not get to discuss college basketball..

Summers was obviously the star of the game, but I thought Raymar was the best player on the court when he was out there. I've been waiting 4 years to see him take the ball to the basket with authority, and he finally did.
I thought our defense was much better than I expected, outside of the first 10 or so minutes of the game I guess.
Fun game to watch, considering the outcome. Nice to win it, Gonzaga is solid. This time last year, we were losing to a non-tourney team (Maryland). And it wasn't even close. Nice to see us get off to a good start, considering the next month of our schedule.

Izzo seemed to be as impressed with Morgan as I was.
And for someone who had more TO's (2) than points (1), Goodson sure liked to talk a lot of crap. Not sure what he could have possibly been saying to Lucas...

Got tickets on ebay monday, heckuva game to go to last night. Got to love that we got off to such a bad start and still won the game against a good Gonzaga team. I really like the hustle that Sherman and Nix are bringing when on the court.
