Everyone is saying its MSU, but I thought the same with Jamil Wilson. We'll see, but this would be a great way to kick off the season.

CHICAGO -- Michigan State's basketball teams are predicted to make a nice 1-2 combo this season.

The defending league champion MSU men are picked to win the Big Ten, while the women are projected to finish second to Ohio State in both the preseason media and coaches polls that were released this morning.

Guard Kalin Lucas was listed as the men's Preseason Player of the Year. The junior averaged 14.7 points and 4.6 assists a game in leading the Spartans to the Final Four and national title game in April in Detroit. MSU finished the season 31-7 and 15-3 in the conference.

On the women's side, center Allyssa DeHaan is listed on the preseason All-Big Ten teams by both the coaches and the media. The senior, who averaged 10.8 points and is on pace to set an NCAA record for career blocked shots, helped MSU (22-11, 13-5) to the Sweet 16 last season and a second-place tie in the Big Ten.
LSJ Blogs: Hey, Joe: Spartans picked 1, 2

#2 in preseason coaches poll. AP poll not out yet, but I'd expect the same.

I'd be pretty surprised if Payne verbals to MSU...I mean c'mon, with Calipari and Huggy Bear in the mix? I'm not buyin' the hype.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him, and it'd be yet another impressive net for Tommy Izzo, but this one has just consistently had that, we're climbing uphill feel to it (of course, so did Roe's)...On the plus side, over the evolution of Payne's list, we've been the one consistent name to pop up - I've just never felt like we've popped up first...Oh well, Coffee's for closers! Let's try and get it done!

Well, it looks like I was off the mark - as word has leaked out that 5* big man, Adreian Payne (Dayton, OH) has in fact selected MSU, and will make his verbal official on ESPNU at 5:30pm. Massive get for Izzo and company, and should bump up the already 15th ranked class (2010), into the top 5.

Payne joins (combo guard) Keith Appling, sharp-shooter Russell Byrd and PF Alex Gauna to form a pretty nice 4-man class. That 1,2 of Payne and Appling is pretty sick.

Here's the video confirmation: Welcome AP!

Great pickup! We have a really bright present and future...gotta love it. It is also really nice to steal one away from WVU.

Any chance we have a fifth scholarship if Ziegler wants to commit or are we done? A Payne, Appling, Ziegler class would be ridiculous.

Outstanding. The class is a perfect carry-over for when Lucas, summers, and Allen leave. This is what top programs can do, it's exciting to see. Him and roe will be a scary good frontcourt.

Not only that, but he schedules good teams, so its not like we have to wait for conference play for things to get interesting. In the next month+, we see Gonzaga, Florida, Texas, UNC.....and isn't Gonzaga like next week? I love that man.

What the hell did MSU ever do to the sporting gods......

Raymar Morgan on crutches and in a walking boot. I'm listening to the radio broadcast, hopefully they'll mention wtf happened.

And....we're rusty. 5 minutes in, 2-0 MSU. Shooting 1-11 from the field, with a bunch of missed put-backs/layups.

More importantly, haven't heard Morgan's diagnosis yet.

For those watching at home, Lucas has returned to the game and is fine. Just shaken up. 20-16 MSU, 8 minutes to go in the first half. Green leads everyone with 7 points, Nix has 5.

MSU leads 33-30 at halftime. Lucas leads with 11 points. Missing a lot of layups, probably just some rust. Just don't get any more injuries.

So Allen, Morgan, Roe, and Lucas are all banged up? Whatever...hopefully nothing is too serious.

Haven't heard anything about Roe...is he injured?

And Lucas is fine. Nix failed to call out a screen, and Lucas ran into a wall. A little shaken up, but he returned and scored 11 points.

Sounds like Raymar's yearly injury may be a bit more serious. But at least it happened early this time. And he already got the swine flu out of his system last year......

Add Summers to the list of injuries. Does that cover our entire starting 5? Summers, Morgan, Lucas (finger, too), Allen, Roe. Hell of a team being formed in the trainer's room.

8 days til exhibition #2. Hope we have some guys left.

Izzo said, Morgan suffered a pretty nasty ankle sprain (10 days at least), Roe had a minor concussion, Allen has a groin strain (should be able to go this week)...And Summers just had some cramping.

Detroit Southeastern's Brandan Kearney picks Michigan State | detnews.com | The Detroit News

Quote:
"MSU has everything I want in a university," Kearney said. "I always wanted to play for a coach that won a national championship. From coach (Tom) Izzo I can learn different things on and off the court."

--

Kearney is a four-star recruit [for 2011] and the No. 9 small forward in the country, according to Scout.com. He said the final four teams in his selection process were MSU, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio State.
Izzo having a good week...at least off the court.

Spartans Down Northwood, 76-45, in Exhibition Play - MICHIGAN STATE OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Quote:
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a 76-45 exhibition victory over Northwood University on Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoon at the Breslin Center. The Spartans' Durrell Summers led all scorers with 17 points while junior guard Kalin Lucas poured in 16 points and played a team-high 29 minutes.

Each team started slow to begin the game as the Spartans led just 4-0 less than five minutes in. Neither the Spartans nor the Timberwolves were able to put much of scoring spurt together in the first half, but Northwood was able to pull within two points on a couple of occasions. A three-pointer by Booker Stoudmire cut the MSU lead to just one with 6:39 to play in the first half to make the score 22-21.

The Spartans then scored the next four points over the next two minutes to regain a five-point advantage and held on for a 33-30 halftime lead.

Michigan State put together a 7-0-run to begin the second half with the help of Summers who scored six points over the span.

The Timberwolves answered with five consecutive points to pull within five points at 40-35 but it would be the closest they would come the rest of the way. The Spartans then put the game away; outscoring Northwood 32-3 over the next 13-plus minutes. The run began with 14-0-spurt.

Draymond Green ended the game with 14 points, 11 rebounds and dished out four assists for the Green and White.

MSU was without likely starters Raymar Morgan and Chris Allen who each missed the game due to injury while Delvon Roe left the game with a head injury after playing just seven minutes.

The Spartans will play their final exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 9 when they host Grand Valley State at 7 p.m.

Big Ten Standings:
TBD

These mix tapes always have a very...interesting choice in music.

And almost all of them, I'd say, include a racial slur.

No Morgan, Roe, or Allen. Looks like Lucas is going to play 38 minutes. Not exactly how you want to start the season, especially with Gonzaga in a week, but we'll see. Hopefully they get back in the lineup for Friday. 73-53 MSU, with about 20 seconds left.

With regard to the upcoming game thread.....I still have no idea about the starting lineup. And there will be a "Final Four" theme, because its my last real chance to reminisce.......lol, we'll see about that.

And I apologize if the margins are out of whack, but as Shinma's threads made me sort of realize, the big pic's give the GDT a much more cinematic feel. Or maybe its just me.
