Yeah, Scott and Grant were just the first two I came across, so I was planning on it being more pessimistic than it was. Left a few others like that off the list (Herb Haygood).

Either way, I think it was Mark Dell who didn't even know that people called MSU "WR-U", so I'm guessing they don't use this to recruit, and its just plain not an issue.

Or Dell was recruited by JLS, and therefore, I would then understand the half-***-edness of his recruitment.

just for fun if i had to guess

QB yards - i think UM might be towards the top
RB yards - Florida is probably up there because of Emmitt Smith and Fred Taylor
Sacks - no clue
Int - FSU? Deion, Buckley, Dexter Jackson, Cromartie, Rolle, heck Mayhew(lol)

Who are these "people" who call MSU WR-U?

I know this is the 2010 recruiting thread, but watching the 2009 state championships you have to wonder how Derrick Nix is a 4-star recruit, and won Mr. Basketball. The guy is severely overweight, and can barely move up and down the court, he missed a dunk because he couldn't jump high enough to get it over the rim comfortably. The 6-4 Center from the other team owned him.

So how exactly do you want to "formalize" this designation? An NFL analyst dubbed us WR-U, and its supported by data, what more do you want? An NCAA designation? A plaque? A formal alteration to the title of the football program? This is how nicknames come about, theres nothing "official" about it.

Do you believe that PSU is LB-U? If yes: I'll accept this being an MSU thing that you have an issue with....If not: that would be interesting.

Logical fallacy of affirming a disjunct.

More accurately, you should be making a comparison between MSU's history of sending WR's to the NFL, and all other schools sending WR's to the NFL.

Maybe MSU should concentrate on the football field instead of stupid nicknames.

I really don't give a ****. MSU has produced some great wide receivers. I just think if you asked a college football fan outside the midwest if he knew what Linebacker U was, he would say PSU, and if you asked that same fan if he knew what Wide Recevier U was, he would have no idea.

Hypocrisy...Thine name is DrWho.

Yes, the same DrWho that on any number of occasions has bemoaned MSU particpation in threads in which the content didn't match the subject title and was viewed in his opinion as "hatin'". Well done sir.

That said, a great deal of Big Man projection revolves around 2 attributes - feet and hands. Nix has both in spades. Factor in that he's: already lost a great deal of weight over the past 12 months; desperately wanted to be a Spartan; consistently outplayed numerous more "svelte" and "athletic" bigs this past Summer; and he earned himself an MSU offer the old-fashioned way.
Projecting teenage bigs is very similar to projecting pitching prospects (an odd mix of science and art), we'll have plenty of time to analyze the merits of the offer. But utilizing yesterday's singular game, a game in which Nix never figured to be a large factor by virtue of the style of play that KCentral was going to ulitize seems a little peculiar on its face. Let alone to question a season's worth of performance that earned him the Mr. Basketball Award. Did you see the semi-final game?

Dallas, Texas?

Obviously, no nickname constructed in the past decade or so is going to be nearly as prevalent as a nickname that has been around for the 93 years JoePa has been at PSU.

Huh, I didn't say anything about MSU, this is a college recruiting thread, the announcers were even commenting on him having to lose 40-50 pounds to be effective, and the reason he missed the dunk was because of his weight? Why did you bring MSU into it? I mentioned I watched the finals game, not the semifinal game. I can't believe that guy was Mr. Basketball or a 4-star recruit, he stunk, in fact his backup played a large portion of the game, I'd expect more from a Mr. Basketball from Michigan, the guard carried them to the championship.

I wasn't aware this was an MSU thread either, that's why I didn't post this in the MSU game thread, and went to find a college recruiting thread, although this one appears to be football related. You even mentioned it in your rant, the guy wasn't expected to play well against the team he played? How is he supposed to be able to handle quicker/faster/bigger players in D1 if he can't handle a high school team.

I think the whole MSU wide receiver U thing is deceiving because their wide receivers tend to get more media coverage than other receivers for some reason.

Of course the random guy that wrote the article will agree. You obviously know I was referring to college football fans in general.

Yeah, come on LTA. He wasn't bringing up MSU...just a random player whose next game played will be in a uniform with the word "State" on the front of it....

Yes, he was the only Mr. Basketball in Michigan, wasn't he, usually they dominate at the high school level? Like I've told you, I could care less about MSU, I do follow high school bball though, and it was my first chance to see this guy play, and it was very disappointing, no matter if he was going to USC or UNC.

While I now realize that you know little about projecting big men at the college level, I didn't realize it earlier. Nor did I understand your fundamental lack in statistical interpretation. Apologies.

Number one, everyone, including Derrick Nix recognizes the fact the he needs to continue to reshape his body if he wants to substantially contribute to a program like MSU's. That said, the reason I typed 'continue' is that he's already come a long way in this respect (around 40-50 lbs over the past year), and as such, there would seem to be a reasonable expectation, particularly after he gets to East Lansing, that his transformation will continue.

Number two, yesterday's game was the second in two days...Against a team in Kazoo Central, that doesn't play a true post, and loves to run up and down the floor. Let me ask you a question, how often will Derrick Nix, in college, be asked to guard a 6'5" player, that may be the most athletic kid in the country?

Thirdly, the reason I asked about Friday's game is that Nix went for 20 and 20against a team that has two post players that have also signed D1 letters of intent...Or the time he went for 30+ and 20 against Southeastern and their D1 recruits...What you didn't hear after either of those conests was, "Man that Derrick Nix should be a 5* and will be All Big-Ten as a frosh"...The reason being, one game doesn't a season make. Derrick Nix is a bit of a project as a big at the D1 level (as a GREAT many 17 and 18 year olds are), but with those hands and those feet (even at that size) he showed Tom Izzo enough to warrant an offer. And while Izzo's not infallible, I still kind of like his track record.

"People" would be false considering the use of the term "people" denotes that more than one person uses the term.

Or, i guess you could say people if you include SV and the guy from Dallas. so that's two.

MSU NFL receivers get attention because they often end up in jail. A couple of good receiver prospects doesn't make you "receiver U," give me a break. Is Michigan "Quarterback U"? Is Oklahoma State "running back U"?

I know that SV dominates this thread with his "will campbell to decommit from michigan" news, but it IS a recruiting thread? Right? It's not an "MSU recruting thread."

If you guys would like to start an MSU recruiting thread, you are more than welcome. Then you two can have an entire thread to yourself.

Why are you obsessed with my screen name? Is it because you have nothing else to post about? Do I care what your screen name is? Please move on and talk about sports.

Since you are so worried about my sn, brez is part of my last name. While I realize rjbbrez is not as cool as lionstigersand... I really did not want to spend 3 days coming up with a sn.

Thanks once again (along with sv) for not posting about recruiting in a f ing RECRUITING THREAD. Troll.

I'm not following? Seriously.

I made a remark about your screen name once. This time I was simply addressing you, and attempting to quote your, "should concentrate on the football field..." comment...Which I found somewhat funny.

Just as in my post here, I wasn't making fun of Buddhists or Buddha, rather simply reinforcing the fact that at that moment, I was addressing a comment from a poster who has the screen name 'buddha'.

Gosh, I guess somebody has screen-name insecurities...You probably type on a huge keyboard, while reading off a massive monitor, while surfing with the flashest mouse around!

No worries...I think pointing it out makes me an e-homophobe.

Ps. And no offense but that rainbow seems extra-gay.

MUNCHIE!

Michigan must get him. It will ease the pain of losing Mister Simpson and Barkevious Mingo.

And for something like the 14th time since September.....Gholston was on campus:

Quote:
With spring practice now in full swing, MSU coach Mark Dantonio has an open invitation out to recruits to come to campus and watch the Spartans in action. This week, that invitation was a little bit more special though. With the Spartan basketball team only 90 miles from the Final Four at Ford Field, the recruits that came up to campus earlier this week not only saw the MSU football program hold practice, but also had the opportunity to see Tom Izzo take his Big Ten Champs through practice, too.

Some of the area's top prospects in the class of 2010 took Dantonio up on that offer. Linebacker/defensive end William Gholston (Detroit Southeastern) was one of those players. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound Gholston is the top rated recruit in Michigan for next year. The Spartans envision him playing a role similar to the one played by current NFL star and former Spartan Julian Peterson.

Gholston was accompanied by his teammate, 6-foot-3, 310-pound defensive tackle prospect Jonathon Hankins. Hankins is a player the Michigan State staff hopes to have attend camp this summer. Hankins already boasts offers from Wisconsin, Toledo and Bowling Green, and that scholarship list will likely expand this spring and summer.

Linebacker Austin Gray of Warren Fitzgerald High School is another prospect that was in East Lansing checking things out. Gray, who already has a host of BCS offers, is looking seriously at Michigan State, Iowa and Pittsburgh. Gray’s natural ability combined with a blue-collar work ethic has teams very interested in the 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect.

Gray’s coach Jason Byers gave his player's visit rave views.

“It was a real nice presentation," he said. "Getting to watch the basketball team practice was great. You can definitely see why Coach Izzo talks about being a football coach. I know Austin and his family enjoyed themselves.”

Another prospect that was on campus is wide receiver Tony Jones (Grand Blanc). Jones has been flying under the radar of national recruiting analysts, but he could be one of the fastest rising prospects once more people get to see him in action. Jones could end up being the top wide receiver in Michigan for the class of 2010. He already has offers from Northwestern, Indiana and Iowa, and the Spartans could soon follow suit .

Detroit Crockett quarterback Tony Lippett was also on campus on Tuesday. Lippett is a tremendous all-around athlete and at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, he could project at multiple positions at the next level. Lippett is the type of prospect that teams will give a scholarship to and then figure out where he can help them the most down the road.

Dantonio hopes to continue to host many of the state’s best recruits over the coming weeks. The culmination is the Green and White spring game on April 25th.
